  1. Pretty good analysis. To be honest, I don’t mind the Hamonic (3 million), Poolman (2.5 million) and Schenn (800K) signings IF they are used correctly. -Schenn needs to be a 7th dman -Poolman needs to be our 6th dman -Hamonic needs to be our 4th dman. Those players, in my opinion, can succeed in the above roles and should be used in the above roles. IF they can be used in those roles, then I have absolutely no problem with that term and money. My biggest concern is that top pairing with OEL and Myers. Myers himself is a #4 calibre dman. Ideally, the guy playing in Myers’ top pairing spot would be a nasty defensive oriented stay at home type guy that could be the “ying to the yang” for the more offensive minded OEL. Instead, I believe that Benning sees OEL as the “two way guy” that can somehow cover for Myers’ defensive shortcomings but I think OEL may have been miscast here. While I am of the belief that OEL will in fact have a bounce back season this year (high motivation), I’m just not sure if Myers is a good fit on that top pairing with OEL. Unfortunately, he will have to be, because Hamonic, Poolman, and Schenn shouldn’t be playing up there either. Put it this way - if Parayko was playing on that top pairing instead of Myers, I think our team would be among the elites. Maybe in that 2nd tier (similar to our 2008-2010 teams)
  2. I think the Canucks are a playoff team but my concern is that.... 1) We are likely a 4th seeded calibre playoff team (7th/8th in the Conference) 2) Our new long term cap situation likely won’t allow us to make the changes necessary to take the next step.......unless we can somehow find a way to get another team to take Myers off our hands (to which Myers’ 6 milllion dollar salary gets applied towards a true top pairing shut down D man). My hope is that at the end of this coming season, a team is willing to take on Myers’ entire contract somehow someway. Maybe Juolevi, etc., would be a strong enough sweetener, but likely not.
  3. Miller-Pettersson-Garland Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore MacEwen OEL-Myers Hughes-Hamonic Rathbone-Poolman Schenn Demko Halak Strengths: Upfront depth A solid combination of playmakers, snipers, two way forwards, grinders, and shut down forwards Very good left defense depth, skill, and puck moving abilities Very good goaltending depth + possible burgeoning superstar in Demko. Very good defensive prowess and physicality on right side defense Weaknesses: Still a little soft up front although they have substantially improved in this area. Lack of a true top pairing shut down guy on defense which could make them susceptible to getting hemmed by opposing top lines. Can OEL be a two way d-man? Is Poolman anything more than a #6? Are Hamonic and Myers anything more than a #4? Can any of our right side Dmen cover for Hughes, or even OEL if required? Long term outlook: The Canucks should be able to consistently make the playoffs over the next few years or so, but will they be able to ascend to the elite level? The current Canucks cap configuration seems to suggest that any cap coming off the books will simply be used to re-up internal players, whether that’s accommodating Holtby’s and Virtanen’s buyouts, or re-upping Boeser, Horvat, Miller, and eventually Pettersson and Hughes again. Canucks might not be able to become truly elite until Tyler Myers’ contract comes off the books three years from now. My verdict: This is a good but not great team that should be able to make the playoffs for the next little while here. I see us being similar to the Edmonton Oilers of last season. If making the playoffs was the goal, then I think we will very likely achieve that over these next few years. However, this is likely not an elite team due to a lack of top quality shut down men on the top four. If the Canucks can somehow find a true top pairing shut down man to play with OEL or Hughes, then we should be able to join the elite ranks. My suggestion: At some point, the Canucks will need to get Tyler Myers off the books. Preferably at the end of this season if possible. While my Quinn Hughes + Tyler Myers suggestion to New Jersey was not a good one, we still need to find a way to move him out. Chicago and Detroit were (are?) taking big contracts with term and so perhaps something can be worked out with one of those teams. A Tyler Myers for Connor Murphy type deal might be ideal.
  4. Is it kind of bad that when read this, I secretly wished to myself that Mike would sucker punch you again all these years later in 2021? :-o
  5. Nice depth signing. We need jabronies like Brad Hunt in Abbotsford. Wonder if his brother Mike will join him.
  6. I love your enthusiasm and hope you’re right. For me, I’m just not sure if Poolman is anything more than a 3rd pairing guy or if Hamonic and Myers are anything more than #4’s. We’re pretty much depending on Hughes and OEL to carry whoever they are playing, and both of these guys might be defensively suspect as well. Anyways, I guess we’ll see how things play out. I’ll happily eat crow if I’m wrong.
  7. I don't think adding in Tarasenko wouldn't work from a cap perspective. I also believe that Pearson plays too important of a role in our dressing and 3rd line, which is why Benning chose to re-sign him. I do like your Myers/Parayko suggestion however (Myers + Juolevi + 1st for Parayko?), but my concern is that we'd now be three drafts in a row without a first. THAT is very risky, and THAT is what leads to once great teams falling drastically off of a cliff (see Canucks, Vancouver 2014).
  8. Brad Shaw replaced Baumer did he not? You are correct however (re - what kind of coaches).
  9. Agreed 100% Here is my concern with regards to how Benning views this team: OEL-Myers (TWD-OFD): Hughes-Hamonic: (OFD-DFD): Rathbone-Poolman: (OFD-DFD) The impression that I get from this D configuration is that Benning is VERY sold on OEL returning to his 2015-2016 form in which he was an elite two defenseman. Is it possible that OEL completely reinvigorates his game due to increased motivation in a new environment? Yes. However, I’m just not sure if OEL and Myers as a unit can be good enough defensively. Having said all that, I do agree with some other posters that criticized my “Hughes and Myers to NJ” proposal since Parayako or Klingberg aren’t guaranteed to sign with us in the summer of 2022. Thinking about it further, I also don’t like the idea of getting rid of Hughes since OEL won’t be in his prime for much longer while Rathbone, while promising, is by no means a lock. We will need Quinn Hughes. Maybe Rathbone or Juolevi as a sweetener to move Myers in a “hockey deal” might be the best solution moving forward if this newly constructed defense doesn’t pan out.
  10. It’s not about “a love affair” of collecting picks although it is important that Benning slowly starts recouping some of these picks over the coming years to ensure a healthy pipeline as to avoid falling off a Cliff as we did in 2014. It’s about doing our best in making sure that the Canucks win a championship with this core. As it stands right now, the Canucks aren’t going to have a lot of money to play with over the coming years once they extend Petey, Hughes, and Dickinson. https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/canucks 1) Luongo’s cap recapture freed up salary will go towards Holtby and Virtanen’s buyout money, and perhaps we’d have to lose someone like Motte in order to accommodate Boeser’s contract extension, etc. 2) On July 1st 2023, Hamonic’s and Miller’s salary will come off the books, but a lot of this money could go towards extending Hoglander, Horvat, etc. The main point I’m trying to make right now is that most of our money that will be coming off the books over this coming year will basically be applied towards post ELC/RFA extensions (Hoglander, Podkolzin, Boeser, etc), and keeping integral Players together before they become UFA’s (Horvat). Benning is basically building this current roster with a “finality” in mind, and I am of the belief that our defense is not where it needs to be. OEL-Myers Hughes-Hamonic Rathbone-Poolman Will have difficulty shutting down opponents even if they are highly successful in moving the puck up ice. If the Canucks want a shot of building a championship defense and championship roster, they will need to find a way of getting Tyler Myers off the books so that they can be freed of all bad contracts by July 1st 2022.......which can give them a shot of bringing in real difference makers such as Parayako or Klingberg. Compare the above defense to the two defenses’ that I’m going to post below: 2022-2023: A: Graves-Klingberg OEL-Hamonic Rathbone-Poolman B: OEL-Parayako Graves-Hamonic Rathbone-Poolman Which two defense’s do you think are more likely to win the Canucks a championship? Which defense do YOU think will have difficulty in shutting down opposing teams? I am of the opinion that A and B from above are championship calibre defenses, and that finding a way to get Myers off the books will go a long way to ensuring that this happens. Unfortunately, given Myers’ term, getting Myers off the books will be a near impossible task (perhaps I’m wrong). Hence my proposal where we’d....... 1) Recoup one of our 1sts 2) bring in a top pairing shut down dman 3) still have good puck movement from the back end in OEL and Rathbone 4) have a real shot of building a championship calibre defense one day. Another way to look at is this: What would you rather have if given the opportunity to have one of the following starting in October 1st 2022? 1) Hughes + Myers OR Graves + 1st + [Parayko or Klingberg]?
  11. Agreed but there are more elements involved in what I proposed. -Getting rid of Myers’ long term contract for what has been very average value -Recouping a 1st -Getting a player (Ryan Graves) that addresses our biggest defensive need right now (top pairing shut down guy) -Having a ton of cap space on July 2022 when we’d walk away from PK Subbann, and invest that money into areas that would allow us to take the next step, whether it’s Parayako, Klingberg, or whoever. Don’t get me wrong....I agree that losing Quinn Hughes would suck, but my biggest concern right now is that our current defensive configuration isn’t that great, and that the presence of Myers’ 6 million dollar contract could serve as an obstacle in us eventually taking the next step. Hughes is an extraordinary PMD, but OEL is as well.......and Rathbone looks like he could be headed this way as well (good calculated risk....and again, even if he doesn’t take that step, then maybe you go HARD after Klingberg in the summer of 2022). Out of the following three defenses, which one is the worst? 2022-2023: A: Graves-Klingberg OEL-Hamonic Rathbone-Poolman B: OEL-Parayko Graves-Hamonic Rathbone-Poolman C: OEL-Hamonic or OEL-Myers Hughes-Myers Or Hughes-Hamonic Rathbone-Poolman I think B > A > C........but maybe that’s just me. I think A and B are championship level defenses while C is the type of defense that would get caved in......but maybe that’s just me.
  12. -I am of the opinion that it's HIGHLY unlikely either of Parayako and Klingberg choose not to test free agency and see what other offers are out there. -I am of the opinion that our current defense is not a championship calibre defense and that clearing Myers' salary would give us a multitude of options in getting to that level regardless of whether that path involves Parayako or Klingberg. -Given that we have OEL + an emerging Jack Rathbone (nothing is guaranteed, but the kid looks like he'll develop into a solid PMD), I am of the opinion that we have a far bigger need in having a top pairing shut down guy to give us a far more well rounded defense. -I am of the opinion that we need a healthy pipeline of prospects to ensure a solid future. Hence, the importance of recouping a 1st round pick. If my logic is off here then so be it.
  13. You might be right, but the Devils do want Quinn quite badly from what I understand, and recouping both a 1st and getting rid of Myers would be a huge advantage. You're right though - none of this will happen and so it is a pipe dream. Still - I am of the opinion that 1) Our defense is not where it needs to be in terms of becoming a true contender 2) We need a top pairing calibre shut down defenseman that can take on the toughest assignments 3) Tyler Myers isn't a bad defenseman, but he isn't worth 6 million dollars, and that being freed of his salary after this coming season and putting that money to better use would go a LONG ways.
  14. Repeat after me. Subban for ONE year. Subban for ONE year. Subban for ONE year. Now take a deep breath. :-) Unlike Myers, Subban would be completely off the books on July 1st 2022............which would allow us to go HARD HARD HARD after who we would really need at that time: Colton Parayako OR John Klingberg. This of course would depend on a number of factors. Does OEL still got it? Has Rathbone taken the next step? Is Graves that top matchups shut down guy? The bottom line is that we'd have OPTIONS. Depending on what we'd need at that time, we could go after a "defensive defenseman" in Parayko, or an offensive defensemen in Klingberg. All the while, having recouped one of our 1st round picks while giving us even more overall cap flexibility. Even outside of Hughes, OEL and Rathbone would still give us that puck movement from the back-end. However, with the presence of Graves, we'd also have a guy that could take on the tough physical match-ups in a top pairing capacity (something which we lack right now since guys like Hamonic and Poolman aren't guys that are capable of shutting down top players from opposing teams). p.s.__________Just read the rest of your post. Yes, I didn't take into account that both Parayako and Klingberg might decide to re-sign before they hit the UFA market, but given where both St. Louis and Dallas are as a team with their cores, would it really surprise you if they wanted to test free agency?
  15. Would definitely be a tough pill to swallow, but 1) recouping a 1st 2) Getting Myers off the books free and clear 3) Getting a legit top pairing match-ups guy in Graves 4) Walking from PK and then going HARD after one of Parayako or Klingberg in the 2022 off-season with all that freed up money would EASILY put us on a MUCH higher trajectory afterwards. Wouldn't even be close. Perhaps it's just me, but I'm not entirely sold on our defense right now due to a lack of a top pairing shut down guy (at least how it appears to me). Myers being on the books will also prevent us from making the upgrades that we'd truly need to get to that next level. While it's possible that I'm wrong, I think counting on guys like Myers and Hamonic to defensively bail out OEL and Hughes will be a tall ask.
  16. 2022-2023 OEL-Hamonic Graves-Klingberg Rathbone-Poolman OR OEL-Parayako Graves-Hamonic Rathbone-Poolman Is terrible? Remember - bringing in Subban would just be for a year. He'd be off the books after that. With that 9 million in freed up cap, you go HARD HARD HARD after Parayako or Klingberg. Contrast this to having Myers on the books for three more years.
  17. No No No. Don't get me wrong - the idea that I'd have in mind is that it would be a pure "hockey deal." To New Jersey: Quinn Hughes Tyler Myers To Vancouver: Ryan Graves PK Subbann 1st round pick The idea being that 1) We would recoup one of the 1st round picks that we had lost over the years 2) New Jersey would pay a price for attempting to unify the three Hughes brothers 3) We would bring in a guy that could take on tough defensive assignments and match ups (Ryan Graves) 4) And this is the most important point: We would WALK AWAY from PK Subban after one year, and replace his salary with either Colton Parayko or John Klingberg. We would go VERY VERY hard after one of these two players based on what management feels would be our biggest need at the time (another stay at home guy, or another PMD). So basically, OEL-Hamonic Graves-Subban (which becomes either Parayko or Klingberg a year later) Rathbone-Poolman At least in my opinion, a pairing of Graves-Parayko or Graves/Klingberg would likely make us a perennial 2nd round++ calibre team for a sizeable period of time as our defense would have a terrific balance of PMD's, shut down D's, PP guys, PK guys, etc.
  18. My trade proposals are retarded I know. :-p. PS - nice to meet you good sir.
  19. Ideally, Myers wouldn't require retention or a MASSIVE sweetener (Hughes) to get rid of but I'm not sure if this would be feasible. But yeah - I am definitely of the opinion that if the Canucks are serious about taking the next step beyond this coming season, they'll have to find a way to get Myers off the books free and clear while simultaneously getting a top pairing shut down man. Hughes and Myers to New Jersey would definitely do that imo. -2021-2022: [current Canucks roster + Graves + Subban = 1st or 2nd round appearance] -2022-2023: [current Canucks roster + Graves + either Parayako or Klingberg = perennial 2nd round appearances and beyond for 'x' number of years]
  20. Nucks can still do that if they want. Dickinson can play anywhere in the line-up and Poolman will be replaced by Schenn if Schenn outplays him. Dickenson-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Garland Pearson-Miller-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore OEL-Myers Hughes-Hamonic Rathbone-Schenn Demko Halak Could still happen.
  21. I would try and move Hamonic for a low pick (3 million), plus replace both Sutter and Halak with talent within the system (so about another 1 milllion in savings there). Yeah looks like you might be right unfortunately. I had forgotten about our 2.5 M owed to Holtby and Virtanen. Id honestly offer Hughes and Myers for Graves, Subbann, and a 1st with the expectation that we’d walk from Subban after one year and then go HARD after Parayko or Klingberg based on what we needed more at that time (an OFD or DFD).
  22. Fair enough. A part of my motivation for thinking of this proposal however, is the fact that we are in dire need of a top pairing shut down guy. I’m not sure if Ryan Graves is that guy but he’s pretty damn close I believe (maybe I’m wrong?). Severson is another offensive defenseman and wouldn’t really help address our current needs (ie a DFD that can take on tough defensive match ups). We also get back one of our 1sts, along with marrying Myers to NJ for three more years while we lose PK Subbann after one and then go HARD after Parayko or Klingberg on July 1st 2022 (depending on if management at the feels that we’d be better served going after a PMD to replace Hughes, or getting another DFD if guys like OEL and Rathbone are killing it in their roles) OEL-Hamonic Graves-Subban [Parayko or Klingberg in 22-23] Rathbone-Poolman
  23. Big picture. Myers for Subbann. The idea is that we would walk away from Subbann after ONE year and then go HARD after Colton Parayko or John Klingberg in the 2022 offseason. By contrast, we would be married to Myers and his 6 million dollar contract for three more years if we kept Myers. In my proposed deal, NJ would also give us a 1st (to recoup some of the first round picks we’ve been trading these past few years), as well as a guy that can take on tougher defensive match ups against top lines (Ryan Graves).
