[Discussion] Are the Canucks now a legitimate playoff team?
Patel Bure replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Canucks Talk
I should mention this more on the 'proposals' forum but I have a suggestion that excites me (but may not excite you). Hughes and Myers to the Devils for Ryan Graves, PK Subban, and a 1st round pick. The Devils get their wish of reuniting the three Hughes', while we achieve the following: 1) We get a true top pairing shut down guy in Ryan Graves 2) We recoup one of the 1st round picks that we've given up over these past few years 3) After one year of PK Subban, he comes off the books, and we go HARD after one of Colton Parayko or John Klingberg based on our needs at time (i.e. if we feel like we need more offense from the back-end or if we need another tough stay-at-homer). The above trade, in my opinion, is what would REALLY set us up for signficant playoff success. -

Why do you believe that Poolman is seriously underrated? I'm definitely open to receiving new information but everything that I've heard so far seems to suggest that Poolman got absolutely whenever he had to play higher in the line-up. This is what the Advanced Analytics suggest, and this is also what all/most Jets fans on HF suggested. Trust me - I want our current team to succeed and so if you have any positive information on Poolman that I am not aware of, please share it. -
I'm pondering outloud if a Hughes + Myers deal to New Jersey would make sense. We give New Jersey their 'cream dream' of reuniting the three Hughes brothers while they also take Myers' long term contract off our books. Devils also give us a 1st round pick (Benning talked about wanting to recoup picks.....so this would be a start). In return, we take on a strong defensive defenseman (like Ryan Graves) + PK Subban for a year. We move on from Subban at the end of the season and replace him with a John Klingberg or Colton Parayko.

To New Jersey: -Hughes -Myers To Canucks -Graves -PK Subban -1st round pick 2021-2022: Miller-Pettersson-Garland Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore OEL-Hamonic Graves-Subban (to become Parayko or Klingberg in 22-23) Rathbone-Poolman Demko Halak In the 2022 offseason, we replace PK Subban with Colton Parayko.

Agreed, and like I said, I would love to be proven wrong here but I'm just not "seeing it" with that right side D. I absolutely LOVE our forward group (although we need a bit more toughness up there), goaltending, and our left side D in terms of having three guys that should be exceptionally good at moving the puck up ice. That right side scares me though. I love Schenn, but he's a 7th dman. The only thing Myers can shut down is the toilet seat after taking a crap. Hamonic is a #4 and Poolman is a #6. I don't know......I think we definitely get into the playoffs this coming season but this better not be a finished product. -
Our 2019-2020 team was better since both Edler and Tanev could take on tough defensive assignments. Our 2021-2022 is better in almost every other respect, but that inability to shut teams down defensively could be a major red flag for us. As of this writing, we do not have a top pairing shut down defenseman and my hope is that an addition of Colton Parayko in the next off season will address what I think will be a very big need for us. Prediction - 8th seeded playoff appearance followed by a 1st round sweep.

I will have to agree with this unfortunately. That right side D is absolute urine if I'm being perfectly honest. OEL-Myers has the potential to get lit up like a Christmas tree in my opinion. Poolman is a 6th d-man while Hamonic is a #4. Asking either guy to cover for Hughes on a 2nd pairing will be a very tall order. Our team is definitely be equipped for next season, but more work needs to be done as far as building a contender goes. Replace Myers and Hamonic with Parayko and Manson and then we can talk about the 2nd round and beyond. -

Ironically enough, I think Schmidt would have been a great fit for our team this year. Why? 1) We will be able to roll out two solid power plays. 2) We actually have two very good scoring lines now. 3) Given the above configuration, I think Brad Shaw would have encouraged more defensemen carrying the puck from the back-end. -

I think the Canucks are a playoff team but are 8th seeded 1st round fodder as of this writing since our defense as a whole still lacks that top pairing shut down guy.....atleast in my opinion. OEL, Hughes, Rathbone, and Myers are OFD PMD's while Schenn, Poolman, and Hamonic, are #7's, #6's, and #4's respectively. Having said that, IF the Canucks can sign Parayko in the 2022 offseason, then I think the Canucks could make some significant noise in the 22-23 season. Replace Myers and Hamonic with Parayko and Manson, and this team is a 2nd round++ team. Maybe it doesn't even need to be a superstar like Parayko. Even guys like Murphy and Manson could go along way for this team. For right now however, a lack of toughness up front + a very suspect right side defense = 8th seed + 1st round exist. -
Predictions for Canucks opening night lineup
Patel Bure replied to Beary Sweet's topic in Canucks Talk
My guess is that the Canucks are going to go HARD after Colton Parayko in the 2022 off season since he’s almost exactly what we need. Josh Manson and Connor Murphy would be our Plan B’s. -
[Signing] Ducks sign Brogan Rafferty

Happy for him and wish him nothing but the best. -
He plays both sides does he not? I was just trying to find a way to put him, Horvat, and Podz together since I think Hoglander and Garland playing with one another is too risky in terms of size. ps - I now put Garland on the top line with Boeser moving down to play with Horvat. Podz goes to plays with Dicks (sorry that didn’t “come” out right but I hope you get what I mean. ;-)).

[proposal] So, what will be “the plan” over these next 2-3 years? I think most of us can agree that we’ve taken some solid steps in the right direction even if more work needs to be done in the future in terms of us becoming a true contender. While I’m still wrapping my head around what has transpired this past week, here is my preliminary outline: https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/canucks 2021-2022: Miller-Pettersson-Garland Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore MacEwen OEL-Hamonic Hughes-Myers Rathbone-Poolman Schenn Demko Halak 2022 off-season: -My guess is that the Canucks will throw the kitchen sink in trying to land Colton Parayko if he makes it to UFA. I don’t know of anyone else from this UFA class that would meet our needs as perfectly. Luongo recapture + moving Hamonic + some other minor moves would likely makes us a competitive bidder. Josh Manson and Connor Murphy would likely be other targets here just in case we missed on Parayko. 2022-2023: (cup contender?) Miller-Pettersson-Garland Hoglander-Horvat-Boeser Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Highmore-MacEwen OEL-Parayko Hughes-[???] Rathbone-Poolman Demko Dipietro As far as that [???] goes, I would try and find a way to move Tyler Myers to clear up cap space so that we can bring in a more defensive defenseman either via UFA (Josh Manson?) or trade. Ive heard Detroit being interested in a guy like Myers and so if they wanted him from us, I’d be happy to oblige. My guess is that the loser of the Rathbone vs Juolevi battle for that 3rd LD spot will be used to recoup one of our draft picks. I could also see someone like MacEwen being used here in this capacity as well if he can’t make our line-up.

Remaining Moves to Complete Roster for 21-22 Season

My hope is that MacEwen can take a jump in his play and challenge Sutter for that 12th spot. I still see some untapped potential there for MacEwen. If MacEwen beats out Sutter, then either he or Highmore can move to center. -

I think it’s actually closer to 20 million taking Ferland’s LTIR into account. -

I share your fears and concerns. Lots of question marks on defense from where I sit unless I'm not seeing something. -

I really REALLY want to be sold on our defense, but I'm just not unfortunately. :-/ -Is Poolman anything more than a 6th dman? -Are Hamonic and Myers anything more than a 4th dman on a 2nd pairing at best? -I love the fact that we have Juolevi and Schenn as our depth guys just incase of injuries. -I absolutely LOVE our forward group, goaltending, and offensive prowess from our left side D, but that right side D is concerning to me unless I'm missing something that you guys are seeing. The good news however is that both Petey and Quinn might be able to be signed to longer term deals. -

I know that you weren't referring to a one-for-one deal. I like your thought process a lot here and completely agree with your reasoning. I'm just not sure how practical it is. Would love it if things went down like this however. -

Your post is probably tongue in cheek but I can’t see Chicago being enticed to do that. -

Nice 7th dman signing. :-) -

Hope you’re right. While I like our forward group a LOT (likely a top 10 forward group in the league), I’m a little concerned about the defense. Poolman and Schenn are 6th/7th dmen from what I understand while Myers and Hamonic are #4’s. Will OEL be able to find his form from 3-4 years ago? Will Hughes be able to take a leap in his defensive play? I think our defense still has a number of questions. Hopefully, Shaw will be able to work his magic. -

He’s still a useful PK’er and faceoff guy, and this will help alleviate a lot of pressure off of Dickinson.
