  1. that original article snippet doesn't really say that Aquillini was lived at the time we took Juolevi over Tkachuk. it says that he was livid we made that pick...... well, I think everyone is livid we made that pick...... but I'm thinking he made the comment after the fact. I'll expand on the 2nd comment, we probably don't get one of EP and QH if we took Tkachuk. ....... that's the beauty of being a lousy team and taking risks/making mistakes. if they don't work out, you get high draft picks as compensation.
  2. honestly, I think the Canucks should not be trying to stockpile picks. I think there would be too much time lag before those players are good contributors.. eventually I think EP, QH and TD get tired of all the losing. and I actually don't think the Canucks are that far away from being a solid playoff team.
  3. ESPN top 100 (plus 15 honorable mentions) had six Canucks listed...... plus I believe the one missing player was JT Miller...... so that's 7 players (although you might drop CG to make it 6 players again). that seems like alot for a poor team............ but I agree with those talent evaluations.
  4. yup, Benning did too much and it wasn't good...... but even if what he had added was fairly good, I don't think it would have fit the team's situation that well. Aquillini's though are probably accountable for this too.
  5. my partial bad.... toffoli is 2 years plus rest of this season. but still that's 75% more term than miller. anyway, it's an issue for all trades of many good veteran players.
  6. that he will be an RFA in the summer of 2023..... contrast that with Toffoli under contract to Calgary much longer basically Canucks or a trade team only "own his rights" for that short period of time. any marquee franchise will cap room can sign him next summer and give up nothing.... not sure marquee franchise/winning team/salary cap room are that compatible. the one nice thing is if you trade him to a lesser franchise with up-and-coming players and lots of salary cap room, he might sign there in summer 2023 whereas maybe he wouldn't if he'd never lived there. reminds me of NBA trades where this is even more of a factor.
  7. one big difference between Toffoli and Miller....... Toffoli is a few years further away from RFA... he is under contract much longer than JTM.... both players are very cap-friendly numbers right now
  8. did the 1970s Canucks have any success? i.e. playoffs.... I am old enough to know but didn't live in vancouver at the time.
  9. very very interesting on the tallon/guevremont play/trades...... talon is considered a semi-bust, but now I'm thinking it wasn't fair........ weren't tallon and guevremont technically on Team Canada for the 1972 Canada/Russia series? speaks volumes I think. Cam Neely was never going to play well for Vancouver (although I have seen the argument he was misused).... he was far far better right off the bat in Boston.. suggests maybe hometown pressure got to him.... along similar lines, it seems obvious to me that Jake Virtanen would have done better with another team. how much better I am not sure valve and derlago for williams and butler was appalling (even at the time)......... although TW was very good for marketing and helped get team to Stanley cup finals...... butler even shut down Gretzky one game.... but overall, horrific trade. Rick Martin from Buffalo to LA was the trade that led to restrictions on trading draft picks. you have to remember that with all these trades mentioned, the whole contract situation was different....... I can't remember "real free agency" back then, but I'm not sure... but TODAY, we only hold hornet's and miller's right for the end of this season and next season....... the one thing that partially counteracts that is that horvatt/miller may like some smaller city/young team they are traded to and resign with them. whereas they would never sign with that team outta vancouver.
  10. Isn't the problem with a JT Miller trade that you only control his rights for 1 season and a couple of months? Then he can sign where he wants with no compensation... Or am I wrong? Serious question (I don't know NHL team structures that well)
  11. Robbie Ray = traded nothing for him start of 2020 season. Bo Bichette = 2nd round draft pick... Bo dissuaded 4 teams (before BJ's) from selecting him. so he wanted to go to Toronto
  12. blue jays are great story... in terms of player moves, what tangible could you learn from it? I'd have to look into background of acquiring their 9-10 best players... seiman (sp?) acquisition was great........ I assume VG was part of international player pool where there is US$5MM total to sign teenage players. surprised Bos/NYY/LAD/etc. didn't scoop him up, BUT they could not out-bid other teams. wonder if VG Sr's Montreal experience helped the Blue Jays in signing VG Jr. robbie ray and bichette are the other obvious massive contributors
  13. as the one person mentioned, most of the people charged with felonies for vaccine fraud are ones supplying thousands of people with fake info. of course, maybe a prosecutor goes "Martha Stewart" on Evander Kane i.e. set an example of a high profile person for a crime hundreds of thousands of others do with felony charges).. and California is a very bad state for that. EK would be better to play in florida/texas/etc.
  14. at some point here, would EK be in danger of a lifetime ban? players in other leagues have had lifetime bans with much more limited "body of work" than EK... but I'm assuming most of those lifetime bans were either drugs (performance or serious street drugs) or gambling.... also, careers have been ruined over allegations of one person. cubs shortstop about 5 years ago. Addison Russell.
  15. that article suggests that SJ requires Kane to be charged with a felony to void the contract.......... earlier articles suggested that SJ voided the contract would be in BOTH SJ's and Kane's interest..... San Jose motivation is obvious.. but in EK's case, if he no longer has contract then creditors can't take $2M a year (hypothetical number) from that contract (don't forget that EK would pay taxes on that contract). if (impossible scenario) EK could then sign a very lucrative contract, apparently they couldn't seize money from that provided the whole thing was structured certain ways (timing of new deal would probably be key....... and I wonder if judge has power to frustrate a scheme like that). anyway..... who is going to sign EK if his existing contract is null/void? I'm thinking zero % chance he gets a deal in the NHL....... Russia maybe, but I'm thinking that's an accident waiting to happen. racist Russian fans (not all of them. very significant %) and African-Canadian player who happens to be a complete tool
  16. https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/sharks/amp/Evander-Kane-skating-into-career-limbo-as-16536715.php Scathing article... Key teammates want to be traded from San Jose if Evander returns to ice with them Not sure how much "new" is in article BUT local beat guy putting his name to it means alot and it's a good summary Also, even more bad last conduct than I was aware of
  17. FWIW.... I think 650 >>>>>>>> TSN 1040 for Canucks coverage. it might be host-dependent but 1040 announcers spent alot of time being personalities. talking Rambo or Home Alone etc..... if they talked Canucks, it was "does Jake Virtanen deserve another shot?". real bar-room fan discussion analysis. 650 talks Canucks and covers the whole team and all the prospects... they know the Canucks. having said that, there's a few on-air people at either 1040/650 who have no clue on salary cap. no idea why we couldn't sign all 3 of markstrom, tuffoli and tanev. no clue as to salary cap and nuances of EP/QH situations. 1040 did break some Canucks stories.. but does that really matter when the whole Canucks world is on the story 3 minutes later?.. I guess you can argue they have closer relationship with JB, the AQ's or others in Canucks organization. so maybe that's worth something too
  18. I'm OP... thx for the responses... I think the poster saying "it'll be tight to sign BB next summer" was simply wrong (or maybe I didn't see a qualifier) are miller and horvat really worth $10MM per season each, as I've seen suggested?? I think we need a thread for what people think Canucks players are worth..... 1) as basic players (so assume 4 year contract as a level that makes sense); 2) "as is".... and I find fans are really biased as to what they think their own players are worth.
  19. I have seen vastly different analysis of the Canucks salary cap situation for 2022-23. and the differences were not accounted for by EP/QH assumed salaries. I have seen a knowledge poster on here say it'll be very tight to sign Brock Boeser next summer. and even that sounded optimistic to me. just no $$$$ room for BB renewal. but I see a couple of salary cap websites, showing Canucks with $10M+ cap room after resigning EP/QH. in particular, sportrac.com shows $26.8 million cap space PRE EP/QH contracts... I'd assume $15-16M for those two..... so that leaves $11-12M = not much, but enough to resign BB and do some little things. which is correct? I have a lead-in question to my next subject: are there restrictions on teams constantly trading away 1st round picks? like, must use your own 1st round pick at least once over every 2 year period?.... can you draft and then trade quickly? seems like circumvention of any rule that might exist............. i think this rule, if it still exists, was based on "Rick Martin from Buffalo to Los Angeles" trade way back when. if there are restrictions on trading 1st round picks constantly, then I'd presume we may have to trade a player of "modest net positive value" to clear cap space. what do posters think is the "net value" of 1) Tyler Myers and 2) JT Miller....... those seem like the two players that might have value. very curious in JT's case. value might be very high. 20th pick overall?........... I don't see another player that would 1) clear cap space, 2) have net positive value, AND 3) not being painful for the canucks to lose. I put boeser, horvat, garland way above miller but that may be a unique personal opinion I realize. thanks in advance :)
  20. 1 assist in 39 games. (and no goals)........ how close is that to some record? honestly, you can spin "not an offensive player" or "stats don't tell the whole story"..... but that stat seems amazing, and not in a good way unrelated, but did Jake Virtanen have an assist this year? of course, he had goals
  21. a bit repetitive... but I doubt the soon-to-be-ex-wife would know that EK throws games. or that he bet on sharks games. maybe she'd know if he bet on hockey. but it sounds like he's doing it with a bookie or offshore (probably with a physical rep who settles with him every week or two i.e. EK doesn't need to log in and have money at these offshore internet sites. but isn't it bad enough for Gary Bettman that someone who just went through bankruptcy is tooling around Europe with some model while his wife has no money for food for his daughter. that part could easily be verified..... isn't this unprofessional/unbecoming/amoral conduct? and EK is serial repeat offender. how did he skate with the league incurring a $500k gambling debt at a Las Vegas casino during a playoff series? and then stiffing the casino? or his violent conduct towards women in buffalo? the strangest thing I find is that if you mistreated women before Me-Too/Cancel-Culture AND also were dealt with (courts and public opinion) prior to that, it seems you get a pass with the "cancel culture" crowd.. Bill Clinton, Schwarzenegger etc.. not sure how Cosby would fit into my narrative but that was really big and many people came forward with similar stories. honestly, is EK's "lifetime work" not sufficient for a lifetime ban? or at least, a one-year ban?... regardless of what comes out of gambling enquiry
  22. Money Ball is such an overused term...... and the book/movie was so deceptive. little mention of the fact the A's had the MVP and Cy Young Award winners. neither of whom had anything to do with moneyball premise..... as far as i could tell, moneyball stressed batters getting "base on balls". of course, if you check, only fearsome hitters get alot of base on balls. not your 260 hitting, 10 home run catcher. basically, moneyball implies that you value players quite differently than most other teams. i don't have much insight as to whether seattle qualifies. the nice thing about LV and now seattle is that you aren't burdened by underperforming, big contract players...... so in the first season, all your $$$$ is reasonably well spent... and you have new fresh culture (ties into no horrible contracts on team too)
  23. honestly, we were terrible last year.... we would have been firmly in bottom of half of the league if we'd have no adverse issues. so why not play younger players?..... what exactly do we have to lose?...... "if the young players don't play well, we might finish in bottom 3rd of league". frankly we are there already.
  24. i can't believe people are defending him on any basis... violently assaulting women in buffalo... that wasn't "he said/she said".... and it has nothing to do with addiction or "crazy ex-wife - although none of us actually have any useful insight in this matter"
