  1. Myers contract is fine for the player he is, we got him probably 1m under the speculated market value for him. I see no need to move him. He isn’t spectacular but he does his role well and when he was injured during bubble hockey we really saw what we were missing. I think people overlook that
  2. Only when they are both in town at the same time which won’t be that may cross overs. A key advantage for the fans is that while the Canucks are on the road, and if the AC are in town fans can still watch Canucks hockey, albeit at the AHL level, which should mean they get good crowd numbers on those days creating a good atmosphere.
  3. Never fight an idiot they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience
  4. In a cap environment it’s not about getting the best players all on one team, it’s about getting the best overall team out of the cap space. No one here is saying McDavid isn’t a phenomenal player, but for his cap space you can have two other very good players who while are not anywhere near his level bring a huge value to the team. I doubt anyone on here wouldn’t want McDavid on their team but it’s the cap hit (that he has earned) that’s the issue. It impacts your ability to fill other roles.
  5. For me it’s another meh season and the takeover saga continues with the arbitrary date kicked back until feb I believe.
  6. Yep it happens over here as well. The point of the vaccine isn’t 100% immunity but it gives you a chance to fight it. cases still high over here but hospitalisations and death no longer follow the same link from infections also if you are double jabbed it doesn’t mean you cannot be a spreader either.
  7. In principle yes , but with the Canucks road schedule and the likely schedule for the AC I doubt they will both be in the same area at the same time. I think the easy recall issue is a misnomer
  8. WAR while a useful jumping off point isn't a 'God' stat by any measure and there are known deficiencies when it comes to assessing both playmaking abilities with WAR and Defensive play. If you look at some of his other figures and usage with the Jets over the last couple of seasons (plus the eye test) you will find that he is a no nonsense do the sensible option D man. He isn't flashy, he doesn't do anything spectacularly but he is fairly reliable. For dropping on the bottom pairing likely with Rathbone he will tidy up well enough and give Rathbone the time and space he needs to be effective. Poolmans value will most likely be in the ability to protect rathbone and allow rathbone to express his playmaking ability. He is a player that should make others around him better rather than being the Pivot. On CDC people seem obsessed with stats in isolation, or with assessing D with points, assess him for what he brings. he fits a pressing need for us, as is fair value for plugging into that hole.
  9. Thing is he has, if you just look at the analytics it really doesn’t tell you the full story, the fact is he got more ice than Demilo and averaged 18mins last season. He has been brought in as a steadying hand on the defence, and yet people seem to judge him by his offensive output
  10. Simply put he is still an unsigned UFA if you were JB would you make an offer?
  11. Tbh things are not sequential there is no reason why you cannot work around some people, if we wait for EP and QH and they drag their feet we risk getting the moves done that we did, making the team worse and making the cost still for EP and QH higher or risk EP taking an offer sheet. doing it the way JB has done gives him more leverage as the team is on paper significantly better than last year which shows that we can be a winning team which in turn strengthens the argument for taking not necessarily a team friendly deal but not going for a ridiculous contract. However I doubt that JB had a plan to do this first then that, but more worked on them all with his team (because it’s not just JB doing everything) with a view of getting things done quickly. signing UFAs does not mean he cannot talk with RFAs or agents etc
  12. The lab theory is unlikely - there have already been studies about the virus and the version in circulation in different areas of China at different points. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-circulated-europe-china-before-wuhan-outbreak-2020-12%3famp the wet market was likely just a super spreader event also this is an intesting read from Cambridge university https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/covid-19-genetic-network-analysis-provides-snapshot-of-pandemic-origins Researchers from Cambridge, UK, and Germany have reconstructed the early 'evolutionary paths' of SARS-CoV-2 in humans – as infection spread from Wuhan out to Europe and North America – using genetic network techniques.' By analysing the first 160 complete virus genomes to be sequenced from human patients, the scientists have mapped some of the original spread of the new coronavirus through its mutations, which creates different viral lineages. “There are too many rapid mutations to neatly trace a SARS-CoV-2 family tree. We used a mathematical network algorithm to visualise all the plausible trees simultaneously,” said geneticist Dr Peter Forster, lead author from the University of Cambridge. “These techniques are mostly known for mapping the movements of prehistoric human populations through DNA. We think this is one of the first times they have been used to trace the infection routes of a coronavirus like COVID-19.” The team used data from virus genomes sampled from across the world between 24 December 2019 and 4 March 2020. The research revealed three distinct 'variants' of SARS-CoV-2, consisting of clusters of closely related lineages, which they label ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’. Forster and colleagues found that the closest type of SARS-CoV-2 to the one discovered in bats – type ‘A’, the “original human virus genome” – was present in Wuhan, but surprisingly was not the city’s predominant virus type. Versions of ‘A’ were seen in Chinese individuals, and Americans reported to have lived in Wuhan, and mutated versions of ‘A’ were found in patients from the USA and Australia. Wuhan’s major virus type, ‘B’, was prevalent in patients from across East Asia. However, the variant didn’t travel much beyond the region without further mutations – implying a 'founder event' in Wuhan, or 'resistance' against this type of coronavirus outside East Asia, say researchers. The ‘C’ variant is the major European type, found in early patients from France, Italy, Sweden and England. It is absent from the study’s Chinese mainland sample, but seen in Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea. The new analysis also suggests that one of the earliest introductions of the virus into Italy came via the first documented German infection on 27 January, and that another early Italian infection route was related to a 'Singapore cluster'. Importantly, the researchers say that their genetic networking techniques accurately traced established infection routes: the mutations and viral lineages joined the dots between known cases. As such, the scientists argue that these 'phylogenetic' methods could be applied to the very latest coronavirus genome sequencing to help predict future global hot spots of disease transmission and surge. “Phylogenetic network analysis has the potential to help identify undocumented COVID-19 infection sources, which can then be quarantined to contain further spread of the disease worldwide,” said Forster, a fellow of the McDonald Institute of Archaeological Research at Cambridge, as well as the University’s Institute of Continuing Education. The findings are published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The software used in the study, as well as classifications for over 1,000 coronavirus genomes and counting, is available free at www.fluxus-technology.com. Variant ‘A’, most closely related to the virus found in both bats and pangolins, is described as 'the root of the outbreak' by researchers. Type ‘B’ is derived from ‘A’, separated by two mutations, then ‘C’ is in turn a “daughter” of ‘B’. Researchers say the localisation of the ‘B’ variant to East Asia could result from a 'founder effect': a genetic bottleneck that occurs when, in the case of a virus, a new type is established from a small, isolated group of infections. Forster argues that there is another explanation worth considering. “The Wuhan B-type virus could be immunologically or environmentally adapted to a large section of the East Asian population. It may need to mutate to overcome resistance outside East Asia. We seem to see a slower mutation rate in East Asia than elsewhere, in this initial phase.” He added: “The viral network we have detailed is a snapshot of the early stages of an epidemic, before the evolutionary paths of COVID-19 become obscured by vast numbers of mutations. It’s like catching an incipient supernova in the act.” Since today’s PNAS study was conducted, the research team has extended its analysis to 1,001 viral genomes. While yet to be peer-reviewed, Forster says the latest work suggests that the first infection and spread among humans of SARS-CoV-2 occurred between mid-September and early December. The phylogenetic network methods used by researchers – allowing the visualisation of hundreds of evolutionary trees simultaneously in one simple graph – were pioneered in New Zealand in 1979, then developed by German mathematicians in the 1990s. These techniques came to the attention of archaeologist Professor Colin Renfrew, a co-author of the new PNAS study, in 1998. Renfrew went on to establish one of the first archaeogenetics research groups in the world at the University of Cambridge.
  13. If it was three years they would claim they would have preferred two years . There is no clauses in the contract so we can always jettison him if we want/need to. RHD are at a premium so unless he goes LE level bad there isn’t much risk with the term as at 2.5 there will always be a taker
  14. The hold up would be because they are better players so it’s likely contract structure, would you rather JB wait until he has locked them in, before making the moves they have, or make the moves say that look we are building a contending team around you therefore you do your bit by signing a realistic but team friendly deal. Dickinson can go to arbitration and might very well do so, but we won’t lose him, Hughes isn’t arb eligible or offer sheet eligible so he has no real leverage. Petey is where the main hold up lies I presume
  15. Watched a fair few Winnipeg games over the past few years and while I think 2.5 is a smidge to much, I’m laughing at people who are like 1 point isn’t worth 2.5m contract. We don’t need any more defenscemen who are points machines, we need steady D who can play a solid defensive game. Poolman is nothing spectacular and often you won’t know he is out on the ice, but he does play a decent positional D game and is solid defensively. you stick him with say rathbone and it allows him to be more aggressive, so while Poolman may not be great by himself his presence should allow his more offensive minded d partner time and space to play
  16. The Nordic countries are an example of mixed market capitalism. (If anything they are less regulated than most American businesses) There is an element of state control over key services and industries with a strong element of social welfare and responsibility. Norway is the most interesting one of the lot as it’s one of the richest countries on earth due to how it chose to manage the revenue from its oil income. a lot of what the Nordic countries have is strong fiscal management and a more collectivist approach rather than individualistic. One way of looking at it is they are free trade countries where the risk is shared collectively, tax is flat normally around 45% so it’s not a progressive tax structure at all, however as part of that social welfare and collectivist approach that covers for the majority of public services including utilities, which means in your take home pay you get to keep the majority of it. I guess the convergence of ideas is this - so you get to keep more of your take home pay but have to pay for services as and when you need them, or do you take home less but what you have after basic essentials (food and shelter) is yours. I think through the true success of the Nordic countries is that they can balance ideas from across the political spectrum and that they recognise the value from different viewpoints. The Overton window is vastly different to that of the USA and even Bernie Sanders would be far outside it in say Sweden. I think the issue also stems that in the USA politics is binary so this creates a very much us and then situation rather than in more pluralistic systems which helps create debate, discourse and compromise. Compromise is often seen in politics and weakness but often in reality it’s what politics should be about
  17. If the quality is right you don’t need many, quantity helps when you are throwing $&!# at the wall and seeing what sticks
  18. I would say less Draistal and more Perry. Him and Podz could become out Perry &Getzlaf
  19. How does that work if he hasn’t signed a contract with a team there. He hasn’t reported to the CHl can he not just come over and report to the Canucks and be assigned to the A?
  20. not the pick I was expecting but I’m pretty happy with this. Someone meantioned jake replacement and I think you are right, but a jake replacement that plays on the aggressive side. watched some games he played in the Belarusian top league this season (saw him in 3) and he seemed very aggressive, used his body well, and didn’t try to force the game and took the sensible option when on the puck
  21. How soon is this very soon, been holding my breath and I’m getting a bit blue
  22. It really depends on the dynamic, some people like to play sports with family, others like to play against each other for the level of competition. However if it’s the latter you may see QH want to move to a team in the same division as NJ
