That little toe drag pass to get to the middle of the ice and squeeze between those 2 defenders was something I expect to see more of this year from him.

#6 in white really thought he had him lined up :ph34r:

I wonder how this can be with the NCAA banning professional juniors  from the CHL. Even if you play one preseason game a CHL junior  is barred from joing the NCA

I'm not exactly sure how it works for players coming over from Europe but at this point it's obviously a non-issue. A school like Boston University would certainly do their due diligence in vetting  his eligibility before having the player commit. The School would also be in frequent contact with his Handler (Agent), Todd Diamond, who would also know the situation and make sure he doesn't do anything to ruin his eligibility

Hughes doesn't shoot like this on his best day

Now I'm not saying he has an elite one timer don't be silly but it's definitely not a muffin and if Hughes could shoot like Garland he'd be a lot more dangerous. Hughes will never shoot like Weber but he may be able to learn a thing or 2 from Garland on how to generate a bit more pop at his stature.

Not trying to derail the thread (I'm a big believer in Klim) but if there is any person on the team that should be teaching EVERYONE on the team slapshot mechanics, it has to be Petey.

I get that EP is 4 inches taller than Hughes or Garland but he's also listed as 5lbs lighter than Hughes.

And EP just put up a slapper of 103.2 MPH at the All-Star Game, the 2nd hardest shot EVER by a forward in the Skills Comp.

I'm not sure that Quinn would be helped by being paired with another puck mover. I can't think of a circumstance where I'd want anyone he would be paired with moving the puck/ The beauty of Qinn is that you can pair him with a number fiver six defenceman (so long as he can play defence) and it will work out for the best. That;s why it worked with Schenn and with Juulsen. Quinn's partner just has to suppress his ego and do play a supporting role. Put him with another great puck mover and you won't have enough pucks on the ice.

This makes no sense to me. Why on Earth would we keep pairing Hughes with plugs? We can actually (in a couple years) pair him with a talented partner to help him.

You assume that these two players would hog the puck and try to do everything themselves. These are professionals in a team based sport that know how to work together. Imagine, if you were Hughes, and you knew that every shift it was all on you to get the puck out from back end and transition to offence because all the other guy can do is clear the crease. This means the opposition knows that the other dman can't skate with the puck so pressure him but pinch towards Hughes because it's almost 100% going to him.

Soon he could have a partner that's big enough to clear most forwards and can still skate with the puck and be a threat in transition. It gives us much better chances to effectively breakout and keep the other team guessing.

Do you think that Colorado ever thinks that Makar and Toews are too good of puck movers and should play them on separate pairs with fringe players?

Defintiely not the best defenceman to ever play for Vancouver. I’m not sure Edler even cracks the top-5. But best career for a defenceman in a Canucks uniform? IMO, Edler a pretty clear #1. Certainly he leads in most of the important categories, like games/minutes played and the various counting stats. Quinn Hughes will surpass him eventually on most of the numbers, if not all. And hopefully he will be here long enough to take the GP lead as well. Hughes will likely be remembered as the best defenceman to ever wear a Canucks uniform, as well as the defenceman with the best career as a Canuck (assuming he stays here), when all’s said and done.

Exactly. It's great that we got a bigger, mobile, puck moving dman to be Quinns future partner. Too many people here dismiss just how amazing what Quinn has done since he's begun in the NHL just because he's not 6'+ and 200lbs+.

The simple fact is that since he has joined the NHL, Quinn Hughes has been the best puck distributor from the blue line in the entire NHL.

According to this scouting report, Zadina was the top 3 talent in the 2018 draft. Ranked much higher than Hughes.  And he is actually a strong penalty killer. Dude can score goals and kill penalties. He just needs a change of scenery.

I’d sign him in a heartbeat and play him with Miller.

11 hours ago, Elias Pettersson said:

He was a top penalty killer in junior. He can easily play on the 3rd line and kill penalties.

Yes, we have a lot of wingers but almost none of them can kill penalties. Boeser, Kuzmenko, Beauvillier, Garland, Studnicka. Podkolzin hasn’t been used much either. The only wingers we have that can kill penalties are Mikheyev and Joshua.

    From his scouting report:

The winger has exceeded all expectations this season – an impressive feat. given how highly touted he was prior to ever stepping foot on a QMJHL sheet of ice. His combination of size, speed and skill make him an intriguing prospect who has all the makings of a star. His lateral movements and straight-line speed make him more than just a threat on offense, however, as he’s a potent penalty killer too.

His analytics aren’t bad for someone who’s played on the 4th line. If he was in a top 6 role and used to kill penalties his analytics numbers would be much better…

Could contain: Adult, Male, Man, Person, Text, Face, Head, Chart, Plot, Number

What are you basing any of these comments on? A single scouting report that is over 5 years old?

You say in the first post that he can score goals. In 190 career NHL games he has a total of 28 goals. Those 28 goals are the result of sheltered minutes against a teams weaker opposition and starting 60% of shifts in the O zone. He also has 380 career shots on goal, for a 7.37 shooting percentage, none of that says he is a goal scorer.

You also repeat the articles claim that he is a good PKer. Again, outside of an article that's is over a half a decade old, this has no basis in reality. Zadina has played a grand total of 4.2 minutes on the ice shorthanded in his career. He's never even had 2 min of PK time in an entire season.

Some players simply peak really early due to their size advantage at the junior level, see Jake Virtanen. Don't forget that Zadina was 6'1 and 195lbs in his draft year. He also played his draft year in the QMJHL which is an offensive players paradise and a goalie or dmans nightmare.

I'm all for signing him to a one year "show me" deal and taking a chance on him. That way, if he shows up to camp and does poorly we can just assign him to Abby. When he refuses to report we can terminate the contract with cause and walk away. Or, hopefully, he shows up, does well and we get a cheap and effective forward.

  7. Looks like it could be a good signing. I'm going to wait and see before getting too excited. I will say one thing really stands out after doing a deeper dive in to his stats, as I'm not super familiar with the player over all.

Despite the fact that he starts 57.6% of his shifts in the D zone and that he has 68 min of PP time compared to 356 min on the PK in his career, he has still been on the ice for 30 more goals for than against (198 to 168).

Might be our best overall D draft of all time? Dont remember a year we took this many D let alone 3 RHD!

Only 1 Winger and hes a BIG BOY

Overall I am pretty happy with our result.

With Tom being the crown Jewel and Hunter being basically like a 2nd round pick

I asked for PA to draft a new Ohlund for my birthday present yesterday and he came through big time.

But he can't sign an ELC and still play in NCAA.

I don't see why a 20 year old would sign and not be able to go back to NCAA.

That's why we couldn't just sign him for free this summer.

Yes, this gives us exclusive access to his rights until they expire, but that doesn't change the fact that he could of been a free asset this summer, had he chosen to leave school, or at any time when he leaves as an undrafted NCAA UFA, like Tanev, Livingstone, Stetcher and many others. Sure, it's no guarantee he signed with us if he went UFA but still not worth it with some of the other players available at that pick.

Has he said that he's not going back to NCAA?

If his NCAA career is done, then you're right.

No. After you have passed through the draft 3 times, this is his 3rd time, you are no longer "draft eligible" and must be signed as a free agent. Whether or not he leaves school this summer is irrelevant to his draft status

    He kinda sucks

Skill has some developing to come, but he was the Captain for Team Canada at the U18's for a reason. He was also the best player at the combine finishing in the top 10 in 10 out of 14 fitness events.

I don't have time for second guessing not picking a guy that's been passed over 100 times in a draft.

Come On Please GIF by NBA

But yet we took Mueller, who has been passed over 554 times before we selected him. Using a pick to get him when he is a UFA come July 1.

But Mueller as a DY+2 could have simply been offered a contract right?  Same with Perkins if he didn't go in this draft?  they'd have been essentially free players right?

Mueller, yes. Perkins, I think, would have to go through the draft one more time
