No, it’s a pretty legitimate point. It’s a very legitimate point. Actually it’s exactly what’s going to happen.

Green and his assistants - not the men for this job
Convincing John replied to Dazzle's topic in Canucks Talk
From Utica till now, Green has walked up the hill with these guys the entire time. It’s disappointing to me how Benning gets all the credit for this young core but Green is the guy in the trenches doing all the dirty work. Paid his dues as a player, coached his way through the minors. Answering to the media every night without throwing his players under the bus. I like Green and appreciate the living hell out of him. If you wanna know how hard it is to do what green has done ask the last 86 Oiler coaches. -
Cause he shoots left

We really need another right shot on our team. As soon as he is healthy, the least important LHD will be out. They aren’t even completing against each other at all.

A realistic analysis of Jim Benning's tenure so far

We can’t even have this conversation without cap, that’s the point my dude. It’s not PLD specifically, it’s that age group I’m referring too. -

Ok, sure, let’s give you one in the win column here. UFA’s are a great idea. It still doesn’t dismiss the fact that we have no cap space after emerging from multiple years of absolute nothing. We invested money in a period of time that was completely meaningless. Now that money is stretching into a time where we could have the flexibility to acquire a PLD or a young RHD that will be hitting their stride in sync with the rest of the core. -

If Jay Beagle was worth every penny he would’ve been dealt this off-season to make room for TT. I don’t understand how a fan of this team can be like “cool” when they look at TT and Beagle and be totally happy paying a fourth line centre the same amount of money as TT. It’s crazy man. It’s a self soothing narrative to suppress disgust deep down inside. I can’t even believe this has to be said. -

This is all hypothetical. What would he have done with that space? Jim’s eye for talent doesn’t end at the draft. Miller and Motte are examples of his eye for talent at any level. His best moves make his worst moves that much more frustrating. He did so well with Miller and Schmidt that it makes you wonder what he coulda done with cap flexibility before that or even today. I’m over him burning picks on age gap guys, whatever, he doesn’t do it anymore so why cry about it? I would just like to see him with more cap flexibility to play to his strengths. -

I wasn’t trying to be political when I compared you to Shapiro, I apologize. I was saying you debate like he does. I have sincerely enjoyed a lot of your posts over the years. You pay attention. I’ve not agreed with you in the past, read a few of your posts and you’ve changed my mind. I would like to see us make more Schmidt and Miller deals rather than Beagle and Myers deals. That’s what I mean by big contract casualties. It’s a progressive move, signing 28 year olds to big contracts are near term decisions that almost always bite back. -

Again, I love Benning and 75% of what he has done. A lot of his moves are mind blowing. Motte, McEwen, Miller drafting some gems after round 1. He has done way more good than bad. But sometimes you gotta call out the bad. Let’s say it is ownership pressing him. What if on July 3rd Francisco says “Jim, why haven’t you spent all my money? And Jim says, I’m going to just sit on that $6M and see if I can acquire a expiring RFA that a GM can’t afford or a causality of a big contract. Do you think he’d be mad? -

Did Tampa spend to the cap when they drafted their core? -

I love my kids but they piss me off too. The same applies to Benning. I can like him and want to slap his face at the same time, can’t I? -

Pietrangelo will be a negative value down the road. Vegas is ready to win now, if they think he can put them over the top then ok, but that’s not even close to a comparable situation to us. We just emerged from multiple lottery seasons and they are a Stanley Cup favourite. I wasn’t specifically saying Joe. I was saying if you need mentors, go short term. -

What did he sign like a 9 year contract? Who cares about how big he was in a 2nd round exit. His contract and all the others in the bottom 6 prevent us from exploiting another team in cap trouble. Think about this, he has spent the same amount of money as Tampa has the last 6 years. Haha. I don’t love ANY of his UFA signings. -
He isn’t 18 or 19 or even 21. He is a fully “physically” mature professional athlete in the prime of his life. Don’t you remember how awesome it “physically” felt to be 22? I’m saying he is just as, if not more “physically” able to handle a workload “physically” (like his body). Not mentally or emotionally but structurally and of course “physically”

UFA’s aren’t what they were 5 years ago. This game has changed so dramatically in the last decade. By the time you become a UFA, you’re on your way down. Signing a 28 year old to a 6 year contract is kinda out of style. It’s hard to find a big UFA contract that has had value all the way till the end. If you need to shelter young players, sign your Joe Thornton and Cory Perry deals. Don’t be locking down Jay fricken Beagle. Jay fricken Beagle equivalents are available at any point in time during the season and the next few decades via trade for a super late pick or a cheap and short UFA contract. Cap space should be used as a weapon to make dumber GMs pay for their sins. Take away RFA’s they can’t fit but you can.
