I was never very high on Virtanen, that might be why I feel more disappointed with Juolevi.

When I look at Virtanen with the Hitmen, I saw a player that was physically more mature than his peers, and so that made a difference in him producing in the WHL.  But when you actually look at his production, he had that 1 good season of 45 goals in 71 games, and a PPG.  The other seasons he was at most a 30 goal scorer ... in the WHL.  Not sure why people expected him to score 30+ goals in the NHL.  I figured 20 to 25 goals would be his absolute ceiling, but he didn't even reach those numbers.

With Juolevi, I saw a #1 defenceman that anchored the blueline for the Knights and the Finland teams.  He had all the tools to be that bonafide #1 anchor defenceman.  He simply couldn't translate it to the NHL (injuries had a lot to do with it).  I felt Juolevi's ceiling was much higher than Virtanen.

Agreed 100%. Juolevi wasnt a bad pick. no way we could have seen the injuries coming. Feel bad for the guy honestly.

I don't dislike Myers as a person, or even a player. It's just that he's been paid way, way too much.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing - though I really didn't want to see much more than 2.5 max. Not because he couldn't likely get a higher contract elsewhere, but more because he must realize what a detriment his contract:play ratio has been to the team for 6 years, so perhaps he's ok to take a little less to stick with the team. As a 3rd pairing guy where he doesn't get the fastest opposition, I'd be happy to see him continue with the team. He does block very well, if nothing else...

I think the problem is we've been using him in a top-pairing role for too long, hes had all the hardest matchups and played insane minutes.

Hes probably a decent 2nd pair guy, dont use him on the PK and give him shorter shifts and hes quite good.

Ive wondered for a while how many of his brainfarts are due to exhaustion

2.5 would be a good deal i think, and one of the best 3rd pair guys in the league who can easily step in and play good 2nd pair minutes too.

Yes.   Also interested in seeing how he does not facing top quality of competition which he's been asked to do since arriving.   I doubt he waives.  And it's easy for him and his agent to just add any team with cap space onto his list.   OEL was terrible last year.   Bear was ok.   But call me old fashioned, we can't afford 3 sub six foot defenseman on the team playing important roles and expect to do anything in the post season, which i'm pretty sure is the goal.    Myers is in great shape.   Expect him to show up to camp ready to go.   Doubt he's ready to quit yet, playing for another contract.   5 x 5, despite been asked to play against McJesus etc night in night out, he's done admirably aside from last season.   Get him the heck off the PK, it should pay dividends.    Wouldn't at all surprise me, to see him get another multi year deal after this next season somewhere, 1.5-2 x 2 or 3 years.

If Myers is willing to sign for 3m, I'd like to see him stay and retire with the Canucks

I think hes got a few good years left in him

The fact that he was able to play top pair minutes and keep up says a lot about his conditioning

I mean the prospect pool was empty because they are playing in the NHL. New mgmt is still handing out seconds like candy.

we recouped josh bloom for that 2nd rounder we traded to unload dickinson (solving a benning problem)

and we traded a 2nd in the hronek deal but added a 4th, and we also got Raty so i dont judge them harsh on that

theyve been incredibly stingy and squeezed blood from a stone

Pete 6'2 185 - 74 hits pretty good he actually threw some hard ones too.

    Brock 5'8 140 - 49 hits

    Mikheyev 6'3 195 - threw 13 hits last year in 46 games

    Garland 5'8 180 - 47 hits

    Hoglander 5'9 180 - recorded 41 hits in 21/22

    Kuzzi 5'11 190 - 13 hits

    Beauvellier 5'11 180 - 78 hits

    Suter 5'11 180 - 39 hits

    Miller 6'1 220 - 200 hits

This is our top 9 hits aren't the be all end all but it is a real concern. You don't win 7 game series playing touch hockey. We have 3 guys who threw over 50 hits.

We have Joshua, as well as Cole and Soucy on the back end now im not as worried

If we need grit its not hard to acquire a bully or two

A decade of Benning has made you think that a few mediocre moves is brilliance.  So far they have signed a KHL free agent who probably joined the team due to how bad it was and that it gave him the most opportunity.  They also added a bunch of players for the bottom of the roster.  At the same time they added a bunch of dead cap and spent futures on a team that doesn’t appear close to ready to compete with the top teams in the league.  A year of Hronek before having to pay full market rate is only a good move if we are going to be good this year or he signs for a good value deal.

Let us see how many deep runs this management takes us on before anyone is anointed competent.

These guys inherited a capped out roster that finished at the bottom of the standings with an empty prospect pool

Thats as bad of a situation as you can possibly inherit

They kept the vast majority of our futures and rebuilt the roster on the cheap or free, while adding quality prospects to our prospect pool.

If you had told me that this would be our roster going into 2023-2024 without giving up a 1st rounder of our own, id have said no way

lol you can't say allvin inherited dog sh*t.. he inherited EP Miller Demko Hughes Horvat that turned into hronek.. if anything alvin inherited more top end guys than Gillis.. although he did have a significantly more balance defence.. but allvin is saddled with OEL contract..

every team out there has 3-4 good players, allvin inherited a dogdoodoo roster becaues he was saddled with the most bad contracts in the nhl:

    - OEL

    - Myers

    - Garland

    - Pearson

    - Dickinson

    - Hamonic

    and many more

he inherited a completely worthless D-core that couldn't defend, and 0 penalty killers

So far Allvin has added Hronek, Cole, Soucy, Blueger, Suter, Mikheyev, Kuzmenko, Joshua, Beauvillier, Aman.  We also have Raty, Hirose, McWard, Sasson, Bloom, Tolopilo in Abby.  Total cost of all of these players was Bo Horvat and a pick.  And he also added, Lekkerimaki, Willander and Petey D via the draft.

All of this in under two years of work.  Great stuff really...

This is the most competent management we've had... maybe ever?

I rate them higher than Gillis & Co because Gillis & co inherited a great roster

    Allvin inherited hotdog water

  9. So in my opinion we're very much a playoff team now

    Beau-Petey-Kuz

    Mikheyev-Miller-Boeser

    Garland-Suter-Hoglander (deceptively good 3rd line)

    Joshua-Blueger-Studnicka

    Hughes-Cole

    Soucy-Hronek

    Wolanin-Myers

    Demko

    Martin

Some concerns with Martin but if we give him easy competition it should be ok, plus, the team in front of him is a LOT better than last year defensively

Its worth noting that they revamped literally the entire roster and the cost to do all of this was uh.. Bo Horvat. We traded Bo Horvat, used the pieces from the trade to get Hronek, and the rest was built through free agency.

We kept all our own futures which is absolutely wild.

  10. Great signing, my only worry was center depth before, now fixed. We added some really good penalty killers and defensive-minded players

We can actually roll out 2 very competent PK units and Demko should have a lot of help now instead of being hung out to dry every night

Quality work by Allvin and the chipmunks

I'd be all for this. If Pearson is healthy though and still half-good he'd be a solid addition to our 3rd line, think Pearson - Blueger - Garland would be a pretty gritty forechecking line, and he's a great PKer too. If he's slow or not good enough anymore, then I agree - trade or dump him to the AHL. I'd love to think that PDG is buried in Abby as well, so that opens up space for Hoglander or Podkolzin, but also Suter.

    Mikheyev - Pettersson - Kuzmenko

    Beauvillier - Miller - Boeser

    Suter - Blueger - Garland

    Joshua - Aman - Hoglander

    PDG
    Studnicka

    Podkolzin etc.

the issue i have with that 3rd line is theres basically 0 offensive talent

Pearson hasnt had a passable offensive season since 2019 despite playing with very talented linemates, Garland is more of a set up guy, and Bleuger is defense first all the way.

Most teams now roll out some scoring ability on their 3rd line, its too easy to matchup against us if we only have 2 scoring lines.

Id like to see Podkolzin on that 3rd line with Garland, they should be able to make something work. Podz has a lot of natural offensive talent, hopefully he can put it together.

Yes.   We might as well be getting upset Stillman isn't still around.   Or Hutton.  Or Robert Dirk, but at least I think he played in Kelowna.

Personally im livid that Stillman isnt still around

With him in the lineup, we were trending towards a top-5 pick in the draft

When he left, our draft position nuked

    And Buffalos started soaring

    theres a lesson in that

I mean, after he signed that extension Dumba has been regressing every year since. That expansion year, Soucy and Dumba practically had the same amount of points, while Soucy having no PP minutes. Soucy also led the entire team in +/- (yeah not really a fruitful stat, but still meaningful). So, they could have easily went with a different route and exposed Dumba and give Soucy a more predominant role on the team. Especially, a team that was cap strapped.

I’m just saying, I would have preferred management try and court Dumoulin (4m/yrs) over here and re-sign Burroughs. Rather than paying Cole and Soucy 3m each. The former option probably would have saved us a million of cap.

Heh but then Burroughs would be paired with Hughes or Hronek which is simply unacceptable

He lost this fight?  Looks like he destroyed Troy Terry with a huge hit and then stood up for himself against Ryan Getzlaf. The fight was even at best, only 4 punches were thrown…

    What a monstrous hit

Unrelated but i cant wait until Klimovich is in our lineup too
