I get the theory but the best teams arent actually built this way.. as nice and and straightforward as the theory sounds. Look at how many ELCs Vegas had on their roster this year.. exactly 1. Kaden Korczac. And Florida? 1 as well - Anton Lundell. As for drafting? Florida's only impact players that they drafted were: Barkov, Lundell, and Ekblad. Vegas obviously has basically none but ill ascribe that to the fact that its a new franchise. Look at the regular seasons top team as well- Boston. Pastrnak, Marchand, Mcavoy, Carlo are the only significant players that they drafted. We have: Petey, Hughes, Demko. You could argue Brock as well (55 points in a bad year). Thats 3 incredible players and 1 good player. Already on par with Boston, and ahead of Florida. What we've stunk at is building a good supporting cast around them via trade and UFA. Benning went for the flashy names instead of looking for value. OEL was a flashy name who regressed massively from his early success. King Loui is beyond reproach so i have nothing negative to say about him. Myers, Pearson, Poolman, Beagle, Roussel etc etc all overpaid and underdelivered. Meanwhile, Florida acquired Sam Bennett for pennies on the dollar and turned him into a star. Vegas went out there and made a huge splash in trade - giving up young players and valuable futures to land a superstar in Jack Eichel. This is why I completely disagree with picking players that have a nice save "will be a warm body in the nhl" floor. Its a complete waste of draft capital. Why would you waste a pick on a guy who projects to be a decent middle-6 forward when you can pick up a Tyler Motte for basically free. Or a guy who projects to be a bottom-4 D-pairing, when you can get an Ethan Bear from a team like Carolina for free. Draft for a sky-high ceiling, or trade the pick.

[Rumour] Caps Openly Shopping Mantha & Kuznetsov

giving OEL a year to find his game again is the right move imo if he doesnt, buy him out next yearand enjoy marginally less cap penalty if he does, trade eeeergh to frolunda for loui eriksson and get him locked up for 6x6 -

Hey this is a good proposal @GMPA and hairless compadres, get this done -
Why do we need to hit on every pick when the salary cap era means that there’s a constant flow of good players available for free or dirt cheap (asset wise) via UFA or trade with teams that need to unload cap? Better off shooting for the stars and trying to draft a special player that no team in their right mind woule trade away, without it costing an absolute haul

His production concerns me. Its "fine", but not incredible. And he has the size to bulldoze the 5'8 teenagers he's up against. If his skillset was elite, his production should be out of this world. I think best case he probably tops out as a good 3C. Id be mighty disappointed if thats what we get out of our pick in this draft.

Exactly this making a desperation move before the draft is unironically a completely braindead idea the ufa pool is weak, and there are some teams in undesirable locations (COUGH WINNIPEG) that will need good players. Garland with a bit of retention will be a very attractive asset at that time.

what im hearing is its likely, that its possible, but i dont think, what would make sense to me, maybe something like, if i was guessing, i cant say for sure, but Loui Eriksson is coming back

[proposal] low-risk UFA signings to buy some time
eeeeergh replied to Ted Lasso's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Im in favor of the strategy. we should not be giving away any more picks this year, nor make any short term moves that we'll be punished for long term Only thing i wonder is if juulsen is up to the task of being hughes partner id rather have bear there -
I think thats all completely fair - I'd say though that there are enough guys that we can probably find in later rounds that could add those elements Klimovich I think is a great example: big, plays nasty, and even has great hands, found in the second round Even Linus Karlsson is a monstrous forechecker and is extremely physical. Mikheyev is fast, great north/south player I mentioned this in an earlier thread I think, but I really believe that the salary cap has changed the optimal strategy for drafting Before the cap, and even during the cap era in that time where everyone just spent close to the cap but nobody tried any funny business trying to really manipulate it, you could hold onto all your players as long as you wanted. You'd never let a good player go, just keep re-signing him and pay them what they want, as long as your owner lets you. Now, all teams are forced to let good players walk. Where you find value in the draft is 2 places: 1. Truly special players that teams wont ever let walk (EP, Hughes, caliber players) 2. Players who can step in and be impactful while on their ELCs, before youre forced to pay them what they're worth Given the abundance of "good players" that are available through UFA, or even through trade whenever a team is forced to unload salary (like us, right now, having to give away Garland for free), id say it makes sense to just go for the player that has the highest possible ceiling
-
The more i look at these picks, the more im convinced that IF these are the targets, the Canucks are trading down 2 of these 3 will be available at spot #19, these are not the kind of picks you make at #11 Would be ok with the trade down to spot #19 if it nets us an additional 2nd and we can unload a contract
-
Oof thats 3 pretty safe picks. Gimme more of that chaotic boom or bust energy.
-
Re-sign Bear, 2 years x 2.75m. Give him the big raise after that if he's healthy and plays like a top-4.
-
I couldn't agree more - my belief is we need to draft the best player available, but specifically the one with the highest ceiling regardless of floor I want a topliner-or-bust pick. Shoot for the stars, or land in the garbage dump, no in between. Gimme Benson.
-
Both were "all rounded" players that did a lot of things well, and tbh makes no difference whether these guys washed out entirely vs becoming a 4th liner / #6 defenseman respectively we pick up 4th rounders for free all the time, same with #6 defensemen

(Proposal) - Size, Toughness, Cap
eeeeergh replied to kenhodgejr's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
the only trades we should be considering at the draft are trades that can get us additional picks i wouldnt hate the idea of trading Garland at 50% retained for a couple of picks Some other team will get a few years of great service at a cheap cap hit, we'll get a couple more picks -
Chris Chelios is 61, if we get him in our lineup, our average age will shoot right up and pass Vegas
-
The thing is, in cap era, serviceable bodies are always available for free in UFA or via trade from teams that need to unload salary Smith is a great bottom pair defenseman and Boston couldn’t even unload him, they had to bury him in the minors thats why I think it doesn’t make sense to weight players higher b/c they have 3rd/4th line floors, if their ceiling is lower. Take the high risk bet, if your pick doesn’t pan out, it isn’t really any worse than a pick that ends up flooring at 3/4th liner/bottom pair.
-
It’s absurd how stacked this draft is I really hope we can secure a 2nd rounder, there’s gonna be some top talent that falls into there
-
Very one dimensional near 50 goal pace at age 22 though nothing wrong with a 1 dimensional winger, just give him some decent line mates
-
“Aaaa I can’t believe we passed on Cole caufield” “bensons too small, pass” if he’s there we gotta take him and be thankful we have a potential Brayden point 2.0
-
Don’t think so but I did find this mock draft of the 1st round https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/amp/nhl/news/nhl-mock-draft-2023-post-lottery-blackhawks-connor-bedard/ahlnbsgeq8kvbzk8kt5ykwv5

I think that’s the reality with supremely skilled guys that are sorta 1 dimensional though I’d say that description applied to lekerimakki rather than Benson Lekerimakki is the best pure goal scorer from the 2022 draft but that’s all he does. Everything else is average or below, and needs a lot of work. I like that GMPA is taking the high risk move and went for a guy that will either score 30-40 goals, or wash out entirely. Benson has a higher chance of hitting his ceiling because aside from his playmaking, he’s also got a deadly shot, insane compete level, and is a pretty slick skater. He has more elite tools than Lekerimakki does. Benson is getting punished on some draft boards for being undersized, but investing in undersized guys now makes a ton of sense given where the average size of nhl players is trending toward
-
A lot of boards had Lekerimakki in the 7 area, one example https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/amp/nhl/news/nhl-draft-2022-big-board-top-100-players-draft-class/h6l24czrwdpmlqzun3hm0ywz

If we pass on Benson I’ll probably go full Heffy and start calling everyone criminals
