Makes the garland contract look like an absolute steal Great playoffs inflated Saad's value imo. -
[Discussion] Are the Canucks now a legitimate playoff team?

If Hamonic and Poolman don't prove capable and that's the only piece missing from being a real contender, JB will get it done at the deadline. I don't think the Canucks are going with the traditional top heavy structure (a clear #1-2 with plugs at #5/6). Based on the lineup, it looks like they're gonna spread minutes around and put guys to work in their areas of strength- OEL probably plays some shutdown minutes, PK minutes, and 2nd powerplay Hughes probably 1st powerplay, offensive zone starts, bullies other team's weaker defensive lines Hamonic plays shutdown minutes, PK, defensive zone starts Poolman plays shutdown minutes, PK, defensive zone starts Myers gets some PP time, offensive zone starts, matching against weaker opponents Juolevi gets sheltered minutes - probably offensive zone starts, matching against weaker opponents Schenn over Juolevi if we want more snarl. i don't see a clear hierarchy in our defenders - (except maybe Juolevi/Schenn would be near the bottom of the list). Otherwise, all our guys could play somewhere in the top four, depending on who they were partnered with. Poolman too - he was paired with Josh Morrissey and basically carried the pair defensively. -

I cant believe how much depth we now have lol. Juolevi, Rathbone, Schenn, Hunt are all NHL players. Rathbone and Hunt are small and can put up points to replace OFD injuries, Juolevi and Schenn can replace DFD injuries. Pretty stoked. -

Myers is excellent as long as we aren't playing him outside his wheelhouse OEL played really well in 2019-2020 when Phoenix iced a half decent team around him Poolman was great in the playoffs Hamonic is a great RHD who can play shutdown minutes against opponents top lines We have more scoring, a more defensive-minded d-corps, a better backup goaltender, better defense coaching, and way more depth down our lineup. No doom and gloom - a great year ahead! -

He tried hard but imo didnt really do a lot. Highmore was much better. -

Alternatively: Podkolzin earns a top 6 spot and we end up with an extra top 6 forward at the end of next year (Miller or Garland possibly). Myers and our extra top 6 forward gets moved to recoup the pick you want + create cap space to sign that #1 shutdown d-man. imo a situation like that is more likely than trading Hughes. Now if the Devils ended up in the sweepstakes for Wright or Bedard.. all options should be on the table to pry their 1st rounder haha. -
Predictions for Canucks opening night lineup

Won't be much/any cap space next year. As you mentioned - that 3m covers the buyouts. We're also going to need a new and more expensive contract for Boeser and Rathbone. About 500k in cap space will be available + another 500k or so if we don't re-sign Halak and give DiPietro the job. Pretty sure Boeser's raise is going to be more than 1m. JB is banking on the cap going up I imagine. -

Good take, agreed on all of it -

Agreed. We've somehow got more scoring, a much more robust and deep defense, and a better backup goalie all for basically a 1st round pick lol. Ngl I'm extremely impressed- regardless of how this plays out, JB worked magic this offseason. -

This is actually pretty crazy. Our top 6 is vastly improved with a 30 goal scorer. Our bottom 6 is vastly improved with a proper 3rd line center (Dickinson) Our PK is improved with Jason Dickinson, and with Poolman + OEL instead of Edler Our D is vastly improved with OEL, & Hughes no longer having to play the hardest minutes Prediction: Miller-EP-Boeser Hogs-Horvat-Garland Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore OEL-Hamonic Hughes-Poolman Juolevi-Myers *Schenn Demko Halak -
[Signing] Canucks sign Tucker Poolman

Haha yes also true. Watching him in the Montreal series was enough to convince me. -

Yup. That's why I like looking at a comparison of the CF of Morrissey with and without Poolman. Morrissey was downright tragic without Poolman beside him. Kind of says it all. -

Hoping he agrees to a short term deal. Im thinking 7.5 is fair for such a deal, given Brayden Point got 9.5 - Point had more GPG over the past 3 years, won a stanley cup, and EP was injured a lot of last season. -

All depends on the EP and QH contracts I think. If they're what we think they're gonna be (7-7.5m and 6.5m) we won't have room for another D man. Hamonic or Poolman could play with OEL. OEL had a CF of 48.2, while Poolman's old partner Morrissey had a CF of 45.9 last year. I can see Myers playing with Juolevi again, but easier minutes as the tough shutdown minutes will be taken by OEL, Hamonic, Poolman. Myers should do fine as long as he's not up against other team's top lines. Myers won't be playing with Poolman as both are RHD. Agreed Rathbone ends up in Abbotsford. -

He actually seems to be lol. 2 pims and 69 hits last year in 39 games. Makes sense too - he skates extremely well and I don't remember seeing him out of position in the montreal series. -

He's not a bottom pairing guy, he played over 20 minutes/night in the playoffs and looked great. Only people who say he's a bottom pairing guy werent paying attention in the playoffs. He played a lot of minutes with Josh Morissey whos a trainwreck defensively. With Morissey, they had a 46.8% Corsi, and morrisey dropped to 42.8% when he wasn't playing with Poolman. Morissey is a 6.2m $ defenseman and Poolman was the one holding up the pair defensively. Poolman and Hamonic are both gonna stay at home, block shots, and throw hits while OEL and Hughes terrorize our opponents. -

Market value for savard would have been around 4.5m/year (without the discount he gave to Montreal to play with his preferred team). For 6.3m, we signed 3 defensively responsible, tough, NHL defenseman (hamonic, poolman, schenn) including two that have shown the ability to play top four minutes (Hamonic and Poolman). Imagine having a 7th defenseman that actually belongs in the NHL to step in when we have injuries (schenn). Trust me - go rewatch the Wpg/montreal series and keep your eye on Poolman, you're gonna be ecstatic we got him -

I don't necessarily agree with this - these guys dont play in a vacuum, and their stats are massively skewed by their partner & the team surrounding them. Remember Taylor Pyatt? 23 goals 1st season playing with the Sedins. 12 goals when traded away to Phoenix. Hamonic was a +21 playing in 2018-2019 in Calgary when they won the pacific division, and -3 the very next year on a weaker Calgary team. Myers was a +9 with Winnipeg, and a -7 with us the year afterwards. OEL looked really good in 2019-2020 when Phoenix iced a pretty good team that had a playoff run. Look at some footage - Beyond his obvious offensive skills, OEL is a really good PKer. That sort of says it all about his defensive ability. Hamonic also exceeded expectations this year in his defensive abilities. Poolman was trusted in Winnipeg to play PK minutes all season long, and played more than 20min/night in the playoffs. That's 3 reliable defensively responsible d-men. What do you think happens to a more offensive oriented defenceman like Myers and Hughes when they're not being relied on to play against other team's top lines? Their defensive stats improve, and they score more points. OEL and Poolman are likely exactly what the doctor ordered - JB delivered. -
[Signing] Lightning re-sign Brayden Point
eeeeergh replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Hard to say tbh. I kinda think its gonna be an amount between Point's old contract, and his new one. Maybe 7.5m/year for 3 years. Point's had an average of 0.44 GPG for the past 3 years, Petey 0.39. Petey also had an injury last year, and Point gets a premium b/c he won a cup. -

Yeah I think you're right. Only reason I think Juolevi possibly edges out Rathbone is b/c of the roles they play. If we didn't have Hughes, Rathbone would be a shoe-in imo. Lets see what Shaw envisions. Might be a case of swapping them depending on the opponents we're playing against
