[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
eeeeergh replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Manson and Miller, both play physical, heavy, defensive. Move Myers (6m saved) Move Pearson (save 2m - Karlsson comes in at league minimum to take his spot on the 3rd line) Sign Manson (5m) Sign Colin Miller (2.5m) Hughes-Miller OEL-Manson Rathbone-Dermott *Schenn, Burroughs On nights against teams like Calgary, carry 7 defensemen and have Schenn or Burroughs go in for Dermott. -
[Proposal] Garland traded to LAK
eeeeergh replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I like the idea of getting picks or prospects for Garland, but it seems like underpayment for Garland. He was top-30 in the NHL for 5v5 scoring, tied with JT Miller, and has sparkling advanced stats. Garland is a proper top-6 forward that's worth a mid 1st round pick (or prospect equivalent) for sure. -
I mean.. we can't give GMJB credit for his first season given that the entire team was constructed by MG. I also dont really buy that there was nothing Benning could do in 2015-2018, because he did do a lot. And it was pretty bad, and usually involved trading away good prospects and picks because he was too impatient to let them develop, or failing to get any return for players on expiring contracts that we couldn't re-sign, because he was unwilling to take a half step back and just admit that they weren't good enough for 1 season. The fact that he let all of: Vrbata, Hamhuis, Markstrom, Toffoli, Tanev all walk without getting ANYTHING in return is the reason he was never able to ice a competitive roster. He traded away all of our picks, and then never had the patience to get assets back in exchange for good players to make the team better 1-2 years later. And of course he presided over some truly horrible free agent signings. Bill Guerin was able to ice a playoff team, in spite of having 12 million dollars in dead cap locked up in Zach Parise and Ryan Suter's buyouts. So no excuses for GMJB.

[Proposal] A 3-way Trade (4 Birds with 1 Stone)
eeeeergh replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
What would you say the value of a top-2 pick is? There isn't a lot of historical precedent to draw from, so I understand we probably have different views on it. The best comparable I can find was the Canucks trading McCabe (top-4 defenseman) plus a mid 1st rounder (11th) for the 4th overall. Again, I don't think my valuation is that far off, but I suppose it really does come down to how valuable teams feel Miller is. I also don't see the Eichel situation the same way you do - his surgery was to his neck, and it had never been performed to repair a herniated disc on an NHL player. There's a reason why Buffalo's doctors weren't comfortable with it. If it was a sure thing that he'd be fine and return to form, Buffalo would have had no issue letting him have the surgery. Vegas did take on a massive risk, along with that 10m/year deal, and had to give up what was essentially 4x 1st round assets. I'm not arguing JT Miller = Eichel, or that they should get the same return. I'm saying both their situations carry some risk, and my proposal is basically asking for half the return Eichel got, which I think accounts for the variables you mentioned (is this a one off for JT Miller, or is he actually hitting his prime, plus he's older). If NJ isn't willing to offer that, somebody else will be willing to part with a mid round 1st + a top prospect, and some spare change, for Miller, which I'd be equally happy with. -

Maybe Ottawa is dumb enough to trade us Jake Sanderson? They were dumb enough to do the Hamonic trade sooo.... -

I think any teams looking at the Canucks would see it was Miller driving results for his linemates, rather than the other way around. He produced like an animal, regardless of whether he was with Petey or Chiasson. NJ has plenty of room to add a 8-9m/year player. They finished with 7.5m in cap space, plus they've got PK Subban's 9m/year falling off, plus we'd be taking Tatar's 4.5m/year. Thats true - they said they'd be willing to move the pick, and that was prior to the lottery. I don't think its a question of whether my proposal is "fair value". It is - I see the Buffalo-Vegas trade as very comparable, as Vegas had to consider the same question you asked - would Eichel be able to repeat? But it was for a different reason - because of his injury. In fact, that trade carried more risk for Vegas, because if Eichel's performance declined, Vegas would be stuck with a 10m albatross until 2026. NJ getting 1 year to try out Miller at a discounted cap hit is a good thing for them, not a bad thing. Vegas paid 3x 1st round equivalent assets plus a conditional 2nd (that would have been a 1st if Vegas had finished in the top-10 as everyone expected), for injured 10m Eichel and a 3rd. We're asking for the equivalent of 2x 1st round assets (at least how I see the 2nd OA pick) and a 2nd, in exchange for Miller, and we take on a cap dump from NJ. Seems fair imo. -
[Rumour] Devils open to trading 2022 1st-round pick
eeeeergh replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Honestly nothing. He's our franchise player. He'll be the face of the Canucks for the next decade. We've never had a defenseman like him, we'll probably never get another. -
[Proposal] A 3-way Trade (4 Birds with 1 Stone)
eeeeergh replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
They'd be giving up the 2nd oa pick for the 9th leading scorer in the league, who on many nights singlehandedly carried his team to victory, who can play center and win the majority of faceoffs taken OR play on the wing. They'd be giving up the 2nd oa pick for a gamebreaking superstar. They said they'd be willing to trade the 2nd oa for help "right now". Its hard to imagine being able to get better immediate help than JT Miller. -
JR wants Sandpaper (Discussion)
eeeeergh replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Yeah I genuinely don't understand why people are upset that we lost those guys. Motte-Lammikko-Highmore was a far better fourth line than anything that would have included either gadjovich and macewen. Neither Gadjovich or Macewen would crack the lineup on a good NHL team. -

Could actually be an interesting development for him, as a defensive-minded PK specialist. -

Definitely makes sense - Petey's the only young top-9 center that we have. RD looks pretty dire too. I like that they're planning for a few years from now instead of winging it every year like Benning. Its part of why I could see them moving up in the draft - they badly need to find a top pairing RD for the long term, and chances are they'll find that closer to the top of the draft. -
[Proposal] A 3-way Trade (4 Birds with 1 Stone)
eeeeergh replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I re-read everything, and you're right, the value is pretty close. The only place I think where we kinda disagree is Myers value - I don't see him as a cap dump. I think someone like Dallas would be happy to take him as a puck moving top-4 defenseman to replace Klingberg for a couple years, and give us a 3rd. I just really dont like Konecny. For being on the top line, and getting pp1 time, his production sucks. Especially considering his 5.5m cap hit. I shudder to think how bad his numbers would be if he wasnt getting pp1 time. I feel like we'd be better off rolling the dice on Rakell or Rust or even Domi in UFA if we need a potential top-6 player. I like the idea of moving up, but I also think NJ would be a better trade partner for us. Since we're taking a step back next year if we trade Miller, we might as well take on a bad contract for 1 year from them too, and really juice up the return. To NJ: Miller To Van: NJ 2022 1st (worth 2x mid-round 1st rounders imo) NJ 2022 2nd (basically a late 1st) Tatar Then we can pick at #2, #15, #34 and really restock the cupboards. Slafkovsky, Mintyukov, and fingers crossed, Miroschienko if he falls to our high 2nd from NJ. -

Honestly think we're getting kind of underpaid here for JT. We're essentially using JT to move up 10 spots in the draft. JT should get a return a little bit less than what Buf got for Eichel (yes I know Eichel is younger, etc. but he was also coming off a risky surgery and is paid 10m vs JT getting 5 for next season). Ideally, JT goes to a contender, who can really benefit from the 5m season. The return for JT should be: 1 okayish roster player (top-9 or maybe a #4 defenseman) + 2 AAA prospects imo. -
(Proposal) Move up in the draft & Upgrade the D
eeeeergh replied to eeeeergh's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Did you read my proposal? It involves multiple picks and a top-6 roster player (Garland). I also said to Alflives that it may make sense to trade DOWN for multiple picks if management is super confident in their scouting abilities, because the likelihood of finding quality players down the list decreases dramatically, especially after the first round. So if you want a reason why a team would want multiple picks in exchange for a higher one.. there it is. Sure we can have different opinions, but across all the drafts I pulled names from, there was a mix of "strong" and "weak" drafts presumably. Yet overwhelmingly the best players were found in the #2 spot, rather than spot #15. That's my point. You trade up, you have a much better chance of drafting a better player. I'm not sure why you're arguing this point, its obvious, regardless of how "generally strong" or weak you feel the draft is. -
I like your general idea but its not likely to be Boeser. Management has said they want to make signing him a priority, and that they feel its a risk to trade away a young goalscorer. He's homegrown talent, and also trading him away after a down year would mean we have to sell low. Garland on the other hand, had an amazing season. It may not look like it, but his 5v5 numbers were top-30 in the entire NHL, tied with JT Miller. He didn't get any PP1 time which is why his total points werent insane, but better believe everyone looks at that 5v5 production. Garland would be a commodity, and of the right age to fit in with NJ. My guess is the price would be: Garland + our 1st + our 2nd in 2023. Also agree with Coconuts, cant see AZ giving up Crouse to move up 1 spot, when there's going to be a great player available at spot #3. Also don't think we can expect a drafted defenseman to play in his D+1 year. They need time to develop, so I would say give it 2-3 years before you project one into our lineup.

(Proposal) Move up in the draft & Upgrade the D

Because they said they are open to moving the pick in order to get immediate help. Have you watched Shane Wright and Logan Cooley play?! Literally no scout has said what you just said there - that it's a weak draft. -
(Proposal) Move up in the draft & Upgrade the D
eeeeergh replied to eeeeergh's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Don't think my proposal constitutes a "tear down" at all. It literally moves out two players - Garland and Myers. Management said they want to get better every year WHILE taking care of the future. If we don't restock draft picks, we'll literally never have a chance to build properly through the draft. Am I ASSUMING Kuzmenko will be able to contribute next year? Well yes. And he's got a pretty decent chance of doing so too. Watch some of his tape. Every NHL team seems to think so too, which is why they're after him. As for Karlsson? He lit up the SHL, there's a pretty good chance he can at least be a 3rd liner next year and produce at half his SHL rate. He also plays a good two-way game so he shouldn't have issues defensively. If you look at my proposal it suggests we: - Add a pick + move up in the draft - add an "efficient" euro FA contract in Kuzmenko (and yes im aware hes not a lock, but we are the frontrunner, and these are hypothetical proposals after all) - Use FA to bring in a RHD that plays a more defensive style than Myers, thereby being a better partner for OEL and/or Hughes - Bring in Karlsson who has marinaded for a few years, and promote rathbone (internal development) Its literally everything you named lol. Okay heres everyone drafted at the #2 spot from 2013-2019 Aleksander Barkov Sam Reinhart Jack Eichel Patrick Laine Nolan Patrick Andrei Svechnikov Here's everyone drafted at the #15 spot from the same years: Ryan Pulock Dylan Larkin Zachary Senyshyn Luke Kunin Erik Brannstrom Grigori Denisenko Are there good players at #15? Sure. But not nearly as many as higher up. But if you draft at #2, you have an overwhelming chance of getting a regular NHLer, and a pretty decent chance of picking a star (I'd consider Barkov, Eichel, Laine to be stars). -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
eeeeergh replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Oh yeah theres very little if any chance. IF we had an advantage its that we're one of a handful of "desirable" places to live that wouldn't be fully up against the cap (moving miller would make some space). And acquiring miller would be easier for a contender b/c they get 1 more year of cost controlled production vs paying nearly double for Forsberg right now. But I'm really reaching. There will be a lot of teams bending over backwards to try to get forsberg if Nashville is stupid enough to let him walk. -

eeeeergh replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If that was possible to pull off, itd be insane. Nashville letting Forsberg go to UFA would be a huge L for their franchise. We'd be able to trade Miller for a kings ransom, and essentially replace his production without giving up any assets. -

We're just traumatized from terrible pro-scouting. I mean.. calgary picked up Tanev, Markstrom, and Gudbranson in UFA and those signings have been major W's. Hopefully this managements pro scouts will do better than Bennings. -

eeeeergh replied to eeeeergh's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Also a good bet if they feel really confident in their scouting. The problem with trading down is the odds of getting an NHL player drops off really badly. Either way, we'll see more draft picks coming in. Also Idk why so many people think Garland isn't worth that return. He produced literally the exact same even strength points as Miller. He was in the top-30 in the entire NHL for 5v5 scoring. On his contract, hes actually kinda a bargain. -

eeeeergh replied to eeeeergh's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Best teams build through the draft. If you're in a cap crunch, and you want to get better now and for the long run, one of your best bets is draft picks, because in a couple years, you get a cost controlled asset on a 3 year 900k/year deal that can potentially far outplay that contract. I am willing to bet that adding draft picks is very high on the priority list, along with finding european free agents that can also come in and play on an ELC. -
(Proposal) Move up in the draft & Upgrade the D
eeeeergh replied to eeeeergh's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Yeah I realized after the fact that we don't have a 2nd. We could give our 2023 2nd though. It is a bit of a gamble, but if you look at past drafts (start at like 2018 or so, because then and prior, players who are going to make the NHL should have made it by now), MOST top-2 picks yield a good NHL player to a superstar. The idea would be to roll the dice that Kuzmenko could step in and deliver what Garland could, and on an ELC for one year. Their playstyles are actually pretty similar, both tenacious forecheckers, both like to camp out behind the net, and spin out in front to make plays. While you do that, you create cap space, and move up in the draft to get a better player that can make an impact on an ELC a couple years from now. A lot of teams are up against the cap this year, and I believe the players I pointed out would be available at the salaries I referenced. If one of them isn't available, there are other options. E.g. instead of Lyubushkin, you could go for Colin Miller. There are also other 3Cs available that could deliver something similar to what Tierney can provide. We already have Linus Karlsson, and we are (apparently) the frontrunners for Kuzmenko. So I don't think anything I mentioned is THAT unrealistic. Honestly, management will have to take one of the following types of gambles if they want to clear cap room while being competitive AND restock the prospect cupboard: 1. Trade players in exchange for draft picks, and replace them with European FAs or domestic FAs (europe is probably prefered as if they havent played in the NHL, you can sign them on an ELC). 2. Combine draft picks to move up and get stars, or trade down to get multiple picks (second is less likely imo, because regular NHLers are much more rare after the 1st round). 3. Bad contract for bad contract trade, and hope the player you get in return can revitalize their career a bit to play up to their contract. -
Zadorov and Gudbranson are benefiting from being on a great team, their play probably drops off anywhere else they go. We see this with free agents all the time. Manson is deployed in a pure defensive role, takes the hard matchups, barely gets any offensive zone starts, it makes sense for him to be a minus player.
-
Manson is absolutely the target. Basically just a pure shutdown defender.
