[PROPOSAL] OEL To Detroit Red Wings

100% agree. Wild that toronto produced a defenseman who can actually play defence. Perfect example of not having to spend a ton to get a better partner for OEL. -

100% agree. Was insane to see the impact he made when he wasn't saddled with clean up duty. What a waste of his talent to have him playing a shutdown role. -
[Rumour] Canucks interested in Andrei Kuzmenko
eeeeergh replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Maybe CAR but Edmonton is going to be in decline after this season. This year is their chance. Next year, they have to give Kane and Pujularvi big raises while trying to sort out their goaltending problems with 0 cap space. If he goes to CAR, there's no room in the top-6 for him. There's room here to play as high as the first line. Garland-Miller-Kuzmenko Podz-Petey-Boeser Pearson-Horvat-Karlsson Hoglander-Lamikko-Highmore I could see it playing out this way, and it's a lot better than what we iced this year. -
[PROPOSAL] OEL To Detroit Red Wings

I think u pointed out the biggest reason why people want to dump OEL Its LE/AR/JB trauma. 12m of literal dead cap. OEL is definitely not the same as those. Right now, our worst dead-cap players are: Jason Dickinson Tucker Poolman I wouldn't put Myers in that group, but he should definitely be moved for a stay at home defenseman who can do more for us by way of shot blocking/penalty kill, etc. -
[PROPOSAL] OEL To Detroit Red Wings
eeeeergh replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
He is expensive but defensemen of his caliber start at an absolute minimum of 4.5m-5m/year. So maybe we can save 2m/year by moving him, but then we need to get that top-4 defenseman from somewhere, meaning a trade. I'm not sure who we move to get an top-4 defenseman without parting with significant assets. Rathbone is going to be great, but i also agree with your timeline, its going to take him a few years to get there. We're better off giving him time to grow into the role than forcing him into it. He's also quite small and will need to develop his defensive game. Grand scheme of things, 2m/year overpayment isn't the end of the world. -
[PROPOSAL] OEL To Detroit Red Wings

My bad. Still incredibly important. He's also our insurance if Hughes gets injured. Proved he can run powerplay1. I'd be pretty scared if Hughes went down and we had no OEL. -
[PROPOSAL] OEL To Detroit Red Wings
eeeeergh replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I don't think we're giving up OEL unless we're getting a return (very unlikely). He's our main minute man, plays in all situations. The cost of finding someone to replace him would be very expensive, so if we want to replace him, we need assets back. Seems pointless. We might save 1-1.5m/year, but it just feels pointless. -
[Proposal] Vancouver 2022 Offseason Moves
eeeeergh replied to Kobayashi Maru's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I dont think Minny does the Boeser deal, Fiala had a career year, Boeser "looks" to be a player in regression (to the outside). Maybe if we included our 1st? Doesnt make sense though - We'd be selling low on Boeser, and buying high on Fiala. Braden Schneider is going to be a good D-man (top 4 most likely) but him and Chytil hardly seems worth it for Miller. NY fans are giving up on chytil, and he has not improved since he started in the NHL. If we're going to trade Miller, we ship him to NJ for their 1st round pick and pick Cooley + a defenseman in the 1st round with our two picks. I think the Zacha deal is doable. Pass on Zadorov, he's not that good - he's getting a boost from playing on a great team, just like Gudbranson. We're going to be disappointed if we pick him up. IF we have a chance at Forsberg, then I'd say we try to trade Miller to NJ for their 1st round pick. Petey and Horvat become our 1 and 2c. We pick Cooley and Mateychuck in the draft. We'd also have to ship out Pearson and buy out Dickinson to make cap space for this move. Then ship out Myers (to Dallas who don't want to pay Klingberg 8m for 8 years), bring in Manson for 5m/year. Sign Kuzmenko, and Linus Karlsson plays for us next year. Sign Tierney to be our 3C. Forsberg-Petey-Boeser Garland-Bo-Podkolzin Kuzmenko-Tierney-Karlsson Hoglander-Lamikko-Highmore OEL-Manson Hughes-Schenn Rathbone-Dermott -
I completely agree. I think the core is really solid, and of a great age mix. We would have been a fantastic team this year if we had decent penalty killing. A lot of work needs to be done to the third line and to the defense if we're going to get better there. I think bringing in Josh Manson (5m/year) and Colin Miller (2.5m/year) while shipping out Myers would do wonders for us. OEL-Manson Hughes-Miller Rathbone-Dermott *Schenn I like that a lot.
-
I think if Bo and Miller don't fit the window, we could still move both of them for younger options. Petey and Hughes are both significantly younger, and goaltenders hit their peak later than other players. I think the challenge with moving everyone for draftpicks is in the first round, you still only have a 20-30% chance of getting a good nhl player, and a much smaller chance of getting a great one. Benning drafted really well in the 1st round w/ Petey, Hughes, Bo, Brock, etc. But we could easily end up trading away our window for virtanens and juolevis.
-
Blowing it all up doesnt really make sense to me, i dont think theres any unfixable problems on the roster. After next year, Virtanen and Holtby's combined 2.4m drops off. We'd also have 1 year left on dickinson, so buyout would be cheap. Poolman if healthy could be moved with a very small salary retention (third pairing RHD going rate should be about 1.5m). I think the cap isnt really a consideration as to whether we should blow it up or not. The big question is will our franchise players BE franchise players. Will Petey become the 40 goal/100 point superstar he can be? I think we all agree Hughes is going to become a franchise player. Its really all on Petey.

[Proposal] Boeser for Fiala (hockey trade)
eeeeergh replied to Odjick29willkillyou's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
If it makes you feel better, OEL can do a lot more for us than Edler. Edler at 3m/year right now is a purely shutdown defenseman, and has none of his former footspeed. His puck moving skills also took a dive. OEL is a better skater, can still quarterback a powerplay and do it very well, and as we saw when Hughes went down - OEL can step into the role and put up a lot of points. We really aren't overpaying OEL by nearly as much as people think. We would really miss him if we lost him. In other news, I didn't realize Minny had those buyouts kicking in - they are in WAY worse cap situation than us for a long time. I think their best option is going to be trading top players for draft picks. I don't see how they can be competitive with 12m of dead cap. -
Yep I absolutely agree. OEL also plays big - he hits, and intervenes when one of our stars gets pushed around or Demko gets run into. Instead of retaining salary to dump OEL, retain salary if you have to to dump dickinson. Takes a lot of pressure off Rathbone as well to have him playing behind OEL and Hughes. Myers would also be so much easier to move than OEL, and there are RHD defensive defensemen available we could pick up to take his spot (Colin Miller, Manson, etc.)
-
I actually really agree with this take. He might be overpaid a bit, but not by more than 1.5-2m/year. Is that the end of the world? Absolutely not. We have contracts that are underpayments too - Demko is easily 2-3m/year underpaid, Hughes is underpaid, Miller and Horvat are both underpaid based on their performance too. For some perspective, people really need to look at other teams rosters - basically every team has some players that are a little overpaid, and some that are a little underpaid. Its normal. Replacing OEL would not be easy. Imo he's still a major upgrade on Edler. Defensively responsible, but still moves the puck well and can run a powerplay.

Literally exactly this, thank u. We'd have to part with assets to get one, but worth it. Then we can address the OEL pairing: Stay at home defensemen are not hard to find, there's always 1-2 available every UFA season. This year's no exception, there will be 1-2 available next year too. So finding someone to play alongside OEL won't be hard either. -

I have absolutely no issue with Myers other than he's playing a role that's not his strength, which reduces the output we get out of OEL by a lot. They have been an effective shutdown pairing because OEL is an elite defenseman who's capable of being a shutdown player if called upon. But It's a waste of both OEL and Myers talents. Mark my words - we would have a MUCH better defense if we had a real shutdown defenseman to play alongside OEL. The problem is we cant afford that + Myers, so Myers has to be the one to go. Myers would be valued immensely in a market that needs a big puck moving defenseman, and can be paired with a stay at home guy, which is why I think we could get a return in the form of a 3rd round pick if we traded him. As for Schenn, he's done a good job, but no team should have him on the top pairing. He's also too slow and gets beat a lot, QH has to cover for him too often. Find someone with the footspeed play alongside Hughes, and get a true shutdown defenseman to pair with OEL, and our defense will be a lot better. -

We can't go into next season with Hughes playing alongside Schenn, or Myers holding OEL back. Something's got to change there. -
Oh my first choice is keeping both Miller and Boeser. I don't think we need to move them at all in order to accomplish our goals. We can run 3 scoring lines much better with both of them. My ideal world: - Keep Miller and Boeser - Buyout Dickinson to save some cap - Trade Pearson for a late pick - Trade Myers to Dallas for a 3rd - Sign Manson for 5x5 - Sign Colin Miller for 3x1 Garland-Miller-Chiasson Podkolzin-Petey-Boeser Karlsson-Horvat-Hoglander Lockwood-Lammikko-Highmore Hughes-Miller OEL-Manson Rathbone-Dermott *Schenn, Burroughs We'd have enough cap leftover to upgrade our top-6 from there too if we want to.

[Rumour] Devils open to trading 2022 1st-round pick
eeeeergh replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Step 3. Order at least a dozen samosas Fixed. -
I think trade #1 is doable, but my problem with it is we could have Manson from UFA without having to trade to get him. I dont see Severson being that much better than what we could get from Manson for the next few years. Manson would be an ideal partner for OEL. 1. If you want to deal Miller to NJ, I think you trade Miller + Dickinson for NJ 2022 1st + Zacha. 2. Trade #2 is reasonable. I'd do that deal. 3. Boston doesn't do trade #3. Debrusk is young and had a breakout year. 4. If we trade Miller, we take a run at Gaudreau or Forsberg, and throw 9m at them. 5. Trade Myers to Dallas for a 3rd round pick. 6. We have Linus Karlsson joining the lineup as well, who is likely to slot into the middle-6. 7. Poolman stays on LTIR, migraines arent going away 2022 1st round draft picks: NJ 1st round pick Pitt 1st round pick Van 1st round pick Podkolzin-Pettersson-Forsberg Garland-Horvat-Pearson Karlsson-Zacha-Hoglander Lockwood-Lammikko-Highmore Hughes-Marino OEL-Manson Rathbone-Dermott *Schenn, Burroughs Honestly might struggle with scoring a bit, its hard to fill both Millers and Boeser's shoes. But that defense is way better, and we add 2 great picks.
