  1. Yeah definitely would prefer a RHD on that side. I'm curious why they went and got Dermott though if they didn't plan on having him on the right side. They knew Rathbone was going to join the big club. And I doubt they have plans to replace OEL with Dermott, so idk!
  2. Colin Miller. Was a solid top-4 RHD defenseman for Vegas, crunched minutes, put up great offensive numbers while also being great defensively and playing on the PK. Has underperformed terribly in Buffalo (understandable considering how awful that team is). Would be a big upgrade over Schenn to partner with Hughes. 3m x 2 for Miller is going to end up looking like a steal.
  3. New plan - shed some cap Give Brock a 2 year bridge deal at 6m x season, if he rebounds, he gets a raise Trade Pearson back to LA for a 3rd (saves 3.2m) Buyout Dickinson and give Lockwood his 1 way contract (saves 700k) Re-sign Chiasson (why not, Miller loved playing with him, and he was delivering far above his contract value when he played in the top 6) Give Karlsson his ELC (beating Petey's rookie record in the SHL bodes well for his ability to contribute offensively) Garland-Miller-Chiasson Podkolzin-Petey-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Karlsson Lockwood-Lammikko-Highmore 35m for that group of forwards, which is basically what we were running with at the end of the season. Trade Myers to Dallas for a 3rd (save 6m) Sign Manson (5x5) Sign Colin Miller (3m x 1 year to give him a chance to recapture his form) Hughes-Miller OEL-Manson Rathbone-Dermott *Schenn, Burroughs, Hunt 26m for those 6 defensemen + Schenn. That whole roster comes in at 70m, leaving 12m available. 4m of that will probably be needed for Miller's raise (though we do recoup 2.4m of it with dead cap falling off, so about 9.5m is available to improve the roster further). Then go get Gaudreau or Forsberg with that available space?
  4. I'm interested to see how Rathbone's defensive game has improved. Hopefully good enough for some sheltered minutes next year
  5. Agreed Schenn shouldn't be on the top pairing. Realistically I think he's your 7th defenseman. He's too slow, Hughes has to cover for him a lot. Yes he hits well, and he blocks shots, but his mobility is a problem. I have been extremely impressed with Dermott. Plus, the fact that he can play left or right side is a huge benefit. I think a Rathbone-Dermott sheltered third pairing would be solid. He also allows fewer high danger scoring chances against when he's on the ice, compared to Schenn. The lineup should look something like this: Hughes-Marino OEL-Manson Rathbone-Dermott *Schenn, Hunt, Burroughs
  6. I mean.. this probably makes sense for NYI, but OEL only wants Boston or Vancouver. I still think we have yet to see the best OEL can give us. Put him with a shutdown partner, and we'll be happy to have him.
  7. What makes you say Dermott would be our 7th defenseman? He's been really good defensively, and a much better puck mover than Schenn + he doesn't get beat to loose pucks. I really like Dermott on the 3rd pair, with potential to move up if he can maintain his defensive acumen for more minutes.
  8. I dont see Bergeron leaving Boston. He's played there his entire career, and made an unbelievable amount of money already. Marchment is going to get more than 4, most likely. I like Acciari as a pk specialist, 2m is a bit high. Kuzmenko would be great. Rangers are apparently unwilling to consider a deal that includes Schneider. I don't see the issue paying Miller what he's worth for the next 6 years. He's probably going to decline in the final 2 years, but our contention window is going to be sometime in the next 4 years anyway, while Demko is cheap and in his prime.
  9. Yeah, I agree with you. I think reliable top-4 defensemen are also a good bet from UFA - it usually takes several years of development before a defenseman is ready to play a leading role, and you usually have to pay a premium for the good ones after their ELCs are done anyway. I don't think we should be shopping for forwards from UFA this offseason (we're pretty set, especially with Podkolzin taking steps forward, Lockwood looking good, and Karlsson joining the team), unless we trade someone away from our top-6. But we should be looking for a defenseman to play in the top 4.
  10. If Montreal retains a bit of salary, we could try a Dickinson for Armia swap. Both underperforming, both theoretically good penalty killers.
  11. I agree with you. It's silly to have a rule that says "No UFAs". Literally every successful team has pulled in some pieces from UFA. The fact that calgary was able to pick up Markstrom and Tanev in UFA says it all.
  12. I like your overall idea. It'd be good to see Dermott play some harder and more minutes - (he played an avg of 15 minutes a night, we need to see him play 20 minutes to put him in the top-4 imo). Especially because the OEL pair is going to crunch the tough minutes. Expecting Poolman likely a ferland situation where he ends up on LTIR for most of the contract, those migraines cant be cured, just treated. Dermott for now slots in somewhere on the bottom pair. Hughes - OEL - Rathbone-Dermott I think Schenn can give us 1 more year with Hughes before we need to find a replacement. We really need a minute crunching shutdown defenseman that can play beside OEL and free him up to be vintage OEL. Hughes-Schenn (Schenn gets 17 minutes/night like he did this season, Hughes gets 22-23 with his powerplay time) OEL-Manson (this pair gets 22-25 minutes/night Rathbone-Dermott (12-15 minutes/night) *Burroughs, Hunt
  13. Yup you're right - finding TWO RHD (which is what im proposing) would be an insane task that would be very expensive. To get Marino, we'd have to part with a top-6 forward. To get Manson, we'd have to pay him a lot in free agency. Wil lbe interesting to see how they address this
  14. 1. Domi would be playing with 2 very capable linemates though - we'd essentially be running 3x scoring lines in my scenario. Domi should have no problem performing with linemates like Horvat and Kuzmenko. 2. Yeah thats a completely fair point. Tbh he should be a middle 6 player, not a 4th liner. 3. 5 years is a bit tough for Manson yes, but we really need a bona fide top-4 shutdown defenseman RHD, and there just arent many available. Myers is a puck moving guy who makes way too many mistakes defensively. Yes he eats up minutes, but we allow too many high danger scoring chances with him on the ice. If theres an alternative shutdown defenseman to Manson, itd be good to see
  15. Again, that's not correct. (c) Notwithstanding the chart set forth in (b) above, a Player who at the time he was drafted was playing for a team outside North America or who meets the qualifications set forth in Article 8.4(a)(v) (a "European Player") who signs his first SPC at ages 25-27 shall be subject to the Entry Level System for one (1) year. A European Player who signs his first SPC at age 28 or older is not subject to the Entry Level System under any circumstances.
  16. Agreed that Myers and Pearson are the likely moves. Dickinson I can't see getting moved (no trade value) unless he has a good season next year, in which case, we probably keep him anyway. I tend to believe the Defense needs major surgery, which is probably where any of our trade capital goes. Myers for a draft pick. Pearson for a draft pick. Rathbone steps in as 3rd pairing RHD, potentially paired with Dermott who's been really great defensively. Sign Manson to partner with OEL, try to squeeze one more year out of Schenn to play with Hughes. I could see Poolman becoming a Ferland type situation, sitting on LTIR, b/c it doesnt look like those migraines are going away. Hughes-Schenn OEL-Manson Rathbone-Dermott The 2nd pairing should be a lot better with OEL free to play offence instead of worry about cleaning up after Myers. Manson is a big upgrade on the PK as well. Rathbone should also help deliver a little bit more offence than Hunt, and will get better with time. Then next year, go after a quality top pairing defenseman to replace Schenn, once we've restocked the cupboards and have some prospects to trade.
  17. I imagine you're right that Hughes could play right side, but loading up OEL onto that pairing would leave vulnerabilities on our others. The root of our problem on the backend is still Myers imo. We need to switch him out for a shutdown defenseman that lets OEL play his style. We still have Poolman locked up as well as our bottom pairing RHD. Realistically if Poolman had ANY value at all, it would be nice to move him and just let Schenn play that spot, but sadly Poolman has 0 trade value. Our problem is we have too many bottom pairing RHD, and are missing at least 1 proper top-4 RHD. Realistically our defense should look something like this if we want to be competitive: Hughes-Marino OEL-Manson Dermott-Poolman *Schenn, Hunt, Burroughs Top pairing is all about puck possession, second pairing is balanced with OEL and a shutdown defenseman, and bottom pairing is pure shutdown, with 3 capable NHL defensemen waiting in the wings to step in case of injury.
  18. Manson and Myers are very different players. Myers is a puck mover who is prone to making big defensive mistakes, which is why you pretty much just see OEL taking long point shots instead of playing the style we're used to seeing in Arizona (and he plays that style whenever he's been paired with someone OTHER than Myers, as well as on the powerplay). Myers will be great for a team that's looking for some spark from the back end. We need a partner for OEL that can lock it down defensively without making mistakes and let OEL play his style. You might think its a lateral move to go from Myers -> Manson but its really not. We need a shutdown defenseman instead of Myers. And that's not correct about Kuzmenko. He does have to sign an ELC, according to the CBA.
  19. Kuzmenko is forced by NHL rules to sign an ELC - that's why it'd be a 1 year deal, because it's capped at about 900k, and im sure he'll want a raise in year 2. They're letting Klingberg go because Klingberg wants 8 years and about 7.5m-8m/year. Dallas would be stupid to take that considering he's probably going to start his decline in a year or two. 6m/year x 2 years for Myers is much more manageable. Looks even better if we retained 1m/year.
  20. I'd say thats probably true sometimes, but every year, some teams are able to scoop up free agents at a great deal. Our problem is we had a management team for a long time that basically said analytics are unimportant, so they went after free agents that passed the eye test but had horrendous analytics. Remember that Tanev and Markstrom were picked up by Calgary via UFA, and those signings worked out pretty good. There are some potential good players available, the key is just not overpaying the bad ones.
  21. Idea being Marino + Hughes would be a pure puck possession pairing. Plays a similar defensive style to Hughes as well. OEL + Manson would be better than OEL + Myers. A bit of a gamble that Domi can do what Garland has done for us, given the opportunity to play with good linemates. I didn't realize how good our cap situation actually is moving forward. Regardless of what is done, we'll have lots of options. Given that they're keeping Boeser, I'm almost certain its Myers who's being moved.
  22. To Dal: Myers To Van: 2022 3rd Round Pick To Pitt: Garland To Van: Marino FA's: Josh Manson 5yr x5 Kuzmenko 1yr x 900k With that, we're down to 74m in cap hit, assuming we re-sign Boeser for 2x6m, re-signing highmore and lammikko to 1m, and chiasson and do not re-sign Richardson. Then we sign: Domi 1yr x 4 (show-me deal. If he proves a real top-6 forward, he gets a raise the following year) Copp 4yr x4 Total Cap hit: 82m Pearson-Miller-Podz Hogs-Petey-Boeser Domi-Horvat-Kuzmenko Copp-Lammikko-Highmore *Chiasson Hughes-Marino OEL-Manson Rathbone-Dermott *Schenn, Burroughs Demko Martin Much better defense, we lose Garland but hopefully Podkolzin and Hoglander step up, and we should get more scoring in the bottom 6 with Copp. Copp also makes our penalty kill a lot better, as does Manson.
  23. Why would the Rags not re-sign him? Picking him up this offseason would give them an insanely good shot at the cup next year And with Strome expiring + all their dead money falling off after 2022-2023, they'll have more than enough to sign JT. They can play him on the wing if there's no room down the middle. They'll get at least 3 more good years out of him, and should have Lafreniere and Kakko going into their primes. Boston and Philly may bite too, yes. Even Tampa could make a push, with Palat expiring + if they're able to move Killorn/Cirelli. Nearly every team in the NHL in their contention window would try to move mountains to acquire a JT Miller. They'll trade away players to make cap room, and trade picks/prospects and mortgage their future b/c JT is the type of player that takes a competitive team and pushes them over the top. Idk where this sentiment is coming from that the market wouldn't be hot for JT Miller - the fact that SJ signed Hertl to his contract, NY signed Zib to his, etc etc. proves that teams are absolutely willing to sign what look like crazy deals to land gamebreaking players. We will absolutely not be able to afford to keep JT Miller unless we somehow end up in our contention window too.
  24. Rags and Preds will both have the cap room to make it happen, easily. Both also have rosters good enough to make these next couple years their contention windows.
