  1. Yep, agreed. I think he gets multiple 9-9.5m$ offers from other teams for somewhere between 6-7 years, probably on a frontloaded contract. It'd be teams that are expecting to have a contention window of the next 3 years, then they'll just suffer for 1-2 years w/ a bad contract, and potentially buyout the last year if it looks really bad. Teams offering a long term deal and mortgaging their future, in order to win in a 2-3 year window, is totally a legitimate strategy. Who knows, if we end up with some luck and Kuzmenko signs with us and plays like a top-6 forward, Podz breaks out, Hogs overcomes his sophmore slump, Martin plays like a 1B, and we somehow manage to totally revamp the defence.. we might be in that position next year lol.
  2. Tbh I dont think a team-friendly contract is very likely. Most top tier players fall in love with the city and team that they play for, but they are also professionals of their craft, and know that they deserve to be paid as such. If the decision is between Vancouver and another playoff team (like the Rags), but another team is willing to pay 2m+ more/year, and on a longer term, I seriously doubt any player is going to turn down that extra 10m$+. 10 million dollars is an insane amount of money, and probably has more impact on that player's life/their kids/grandkids lives, than whether they play for vancouver vs the rags. We might get a 300-500k hometown discount, but even that would probably have to come with sweeteners in the form of bonus money or a longer term deal or something. Tldr: if we want to keep our top players, we have to pay them market value.
  3. Keep Miller, Pettersson, Horvat Boeser to Pittsburgh for Marino and 2022 2nd rounder Myers to Dallas for 2022 3rd rounder (replace Klingberg) Don't think Pearson and Dickinson are really moveable without retaining salary, and Pearson holds his own at close to his salary value that I don't think he has to be moved. Sign Colin Miller 2 x 2.5 (injury + poor performance in Buffalo, likely better than his play reflects) Sign Manson 5x5 Sign Kuzmenko 1 x 900k Karlsson makes the leap to the NHL 3 x 900k Podkolzin makes the transition to full time top-6 forward. Garland-Miller-Pearson Podkolzin-Pettersson-Kuzmenko Hoglander-Horvat-Karlsson Dickinson-Lammikko-Highmore Hughes-Marino OEL-Manson Dermott-Miller *Hunt, Burroughs, Rathbone Forward core comparable to last year, Defense MUCH better defensively and offensively, more depth all around, and we pick up a 2nd and a 3rd round pick.
  4. Don't think we want Zadorov. He wasn't very good with Chicago, I expect he's benefitting from being surrounded with a forward core that's fantastic, as well as a vezina caliber goaltender. He's going to command a premium at UFA, and will likely disappoint. Manson, on the other hand, probably comes exactly as advertised. He's who we want if we can get him, while shipping Myers away. A Hogs for Andrew Peeke trade would also be nice. Hughes-Manson OEL-Peeke Dermott-Poolman *Schenn, Rathbone, Burroughs That's a much more defensively-minded core, with a lot of depth. Nice too that we'd have a surplus of RHD, with Dermott being able to play on the right side.
  5. Marino is 100% exactly what we need, if we can get him. Honestly have no clue why pittsburgh would want to part with him though, especially on such a (relatively) cheap contract for what he is, and what he will be in the coming years. Hughes-Marino would be an insane 1st pairing.
  6. We do - we have Rathbone. He's going to likely provide great value for some team on an ELC for the next 3 years.
  7. Kings absolutely dominating their game, id say they win tongiht, probably get spanked by colorado tomorrow
  8. This is extremely well thought out and put together. Thank you for doing this.
  9. LA plays a back to back as well - they have chicago tonight which they can probably beat, but theyre gonna hit Colorado when they're tired Chances LA wins both of these games is pretty slim. We're in it.
  10. I'm sort of of the opinion that Rathbone becomes a great trade piece. He's simply not going to get the powerplay quarterbacking opportunities he deserves playing behind Hughes and OEL. It would be great if we have some more penalty killing/shutdown options, so a bigger, more defensive minded defenseman on that third pairing is ideal. Dermott plays a tight defensive game, if we give him the right partner, that bottom pair could be a true shutdown pair.
  11. Yeah move Myers. Sign Manson. Hughes-Schenn OEL-Manson Dermott-Livingstone Next year or the year after, Livingstone moves into the top-4 if he is defensively sound. I don't know what we do with Poolman, he's injured too much to be a reliable third pairing defenseman.
  12. Would be nice to get him but he probably gets a big payday in UFA. The other risk is signing UFAs from top teams can mean a player is getting a stat boost based on their teammates. Agreed though, we badly need a second stay at home defenseman to replace Myers. OEL looked like a totally different player paired with Schenn.
  13. LA is probably the only one that matters I think!! Nice to see they're choking today.. An LA loss today, and a win for us against Vegas would put us in the following position: 72 points vs 74 for Vegas, and 76 for LA, no team with any games in hand. It then becomes a very real race, because we're going to see LA again on April 28...
  14. I know the question wasnt directed at me, but no, none of them should be in our lineup. Sort of the price we pay now for not having quality prospects that could be giving us great value on ELC's in their spots.
  15. Everytime OEL has been taken away from Myers babysitting duty, I've been incredibly impressed. We need a new partner for OEL next year.. PLEASE
  16. LA might actually be catchable! They've got Minny, Chicago, Colorado in their next 3. We've got: San Jose, Vegas, Arizona They could go 1/3 and we could go 3/3 Would put us within 4 points with 1 game in hand. Too hopeful?
  17. I agree with most of what you've said there - my only thing is - do you really want Boeser in the core? He's slow and doesn't drive play. If he's not playing alongside a more gifted center or winter who draws attention away, Boeser isn't very effective. Garland, I feel brings more to a line than Boeser does, but idk.
  18. Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much. We dont actually have THAT many bad contracts, and the ones that are bad are actually all still serviceable, just a bit overpaid: Myers- 2m/year overpaid OEL - 3m/year overpaid Dickinson- 1m/year overpaid Boeser- ? But we also have some really good contracts: Demko- 3m/year underpaid Hughes- 1-2m/year underpaid Miller- 3.5m/year underpaid The challenge isn't that we're saddled by horrendous bad contracts, it's that the roster construction is just all wrong - it's a mishmash of pieces with no cohesive identity. A lot of the pieces that we could trade are quite valuable, and would be useful to other teams playing a different style. Our youngest and best players are geared towards a scoring off the rush style - they need lots of open ice to skate, and if they can move with speed, they'll generate good scoring opportunities. We constantly get stuffed in our oppositions zones because our best players are not big and tough, so we frequently lose possession when cycling getting bumped off the puck, or forced to the perimeter for a low % shot. Players to build around: - Petey - Hughes - Demko (off the rush style works because Demko can bail us out of the occasional forced turnover) - Miller? (his play style is perfect, but who knows about the age thing) - Garland - he's in a bit of a funk right now, but he's great at zone entries with possession, that's something we cannot afford to lose Players that don't fit that identity: - Boeser Would be great playing on another teams top line beside a playmaker who drew defenders away, and Boeser could sneak into the slot and wait for a pass). - Myers - if we're going to play that aggressive, we need a stay at home defender who can play beside OEL, and free up OEL to pinch and make scoring chances happen, not just lob writers at the net from the point. - Pearson - he's great on the boards, but not that fast, and doesn't have a great shot. We need a fast, offensive threat that can draw some attention away from his linemates Finally, JR is known for making large scale changes - there will probably be fireworks this offseason.
  19. Time to call up the young kids and tank the rest of the season, hopefully squeeze into the top 10 for the draft.
