[Proposal] Taking Advantage of Vegas
eeeeergh replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I like the overall thinking, but to be honest I don't think we have to give up Hogs. He's shown top-6 potential, just has gone through a sophomore slump. He's got wheels and works extremely hard, and does have good hands, its just been a tough year for him. Vegas needs to unload Dadonov if they want to reactivate Stone or Martinez, and whoever takes on Dadonov has to eat his contract this year even though he wont be allowed to play. Realistically it would look like: To Van: Dadonov + 1st To Vegas: Future considerations (or 7th round pick for show) Remember that Dadonov too is negative value for us next year, he's not playing to his 5m contract, so we have to really be wanting a deeper rebuild and be willing to write off next year if we make that deal. Is that worth a late 1st? Honestly I think probably not. Our core is young and just about to enter their primes, the focus should be on unloading older players (great start with Hamonic) like Myers & Pearson, and leveraging Brock's scoring abilities to land a bona fide top-4 defenseman that's defensively solid, can eat minutes, and run the penalty kill. Unload dickinson, or bury him in the minors and get back 1.6m in cap space. We can look to Europe or the college system to try to find one or two middle 6 players that can contribute more value than their ELCs. We aren't that many moves away from being a strong playoff team. The focus should be on upgrading the blue line, and shaving cap space off wherever possible to make it happen. -
The fair thing would be a cap overage penalty of 150-200% next year of what they exceeded this year + forfeiture of some draft picks. Consequences have to be severe enough to discourage teams from just doing it to win now. Pretty sure if they got hit with a 10m cap penalty and it forces them to fire sale good players and ice a garbage team next year, AND lost their 1st round pick, teams would think twice of playing the types of stupid games Vegas has been playing.

Totally agree. I think we can replace Myers if we sign Manson when he becomes a UFA Use Brock to go after another top 4 rhd. -

I think they have had to focus on maximizing returns on trades, because the cupboards are so empty. We have basically only have 2 really quality prospects that look like locks to make the NHL (Rathbone and Martin). Also being so up against the cap, they really cant afford to make a mistake. I do think the offseason is where they make more aggressive moves - it sounds like they had asked Pearson if he was open to waiving his NTC, and had shopped Myers. Once Myers' NTC changes to a 10 team NTC, it should be easier to trade him. I expect they'll move Pearson and Myers without salary retained. If they can move Dickinson, they will, but I think it's likely he gets buried in the minors instead. Poolman likely stays as the bottom pairing RHD. I still suspect they end up moving Boeser too. -
In fairness to Alf, Petey did admit that he spent too much of his previous offseasons focusing on his brand/image and not enough on preparation. However, based on his effort this season, even when things weren't going well, I think Petey's going to give the offseason his best effort

Oh for sure its a huge credit to them for their desire to compete. Shows really good character that they're willing to try their best to play through the pain. I think it's probably hard to find players that are committed enough to endure that. But now that we aren't in a playoff spot, its time to focus on getting better. I think if we had a suitable option on defense that could step in for OEL and take some hard minutes, they would have sat him earlier to recover. Problem also is how bad they are playing injured - if it was mildly affecting their performance, itd be a different story, but when your effectiveness is down like 50%+, no matter how bad you want to help, I think you should sit and recover
-
We have the room for Halak's performance bonus against this year's cap already, so we're covered there. Moving Hamonic and bringing in Dermott already took care of that. But I do agree - sideline OEL until he feels better. Petey too, that wrist looks lke its bothering him again.
-
Yep agreed. Just wish he and others (like Petey) wouldn't try to play through their injuries. Take the time to properly rehabilitate them, and come back when you're 100%. He's not helping anyone by just powering through, if he cant skate effectively.

He definitely looks injured. Night and day difference in his skating from the beginning of the season to now.

Honestly I think there is a reasonable approach, people are mostly falling on the side of the "total rebuild" out of post benning trauma. People are worried if we don't blow it all up and rebuild, we'll end up repeating the decade following 2011. But it's actually a completely different situation now, because in spite of Benning's horrible asset management, he actually drafted well. Compare the core's ages (I think Salo at 37 vs OEL at 30 kind of illustrates the striking difference between these two rosters): 2012: Henrik- 31 Daniel- 31 Burrows- 30 Kesler- 27 Edler- 25 Luongo- 30 Bieksa- 30 2022: Miller- 28 Hughes- 22 Petey- 23 Horvat- 26 Boeser- 24 Garland-25 Demko- 26 Its a night and day difference. Most of our core hasn't even hit their prime yet. In about 3 years, this core should hit their peak in terms of young players hitting their potential, and being before the older players start declining. Imo JR/PA's strategy of "retooling" makes total sense when you're dealing with a young team like ours. It would take us another decade if we blew it up now and tried to rebuild a young core again. One thing that makes us look significantly worse than this core actually is, is the fact that we simply dont have enough quality defensemen. Downgrading our foreward core a bit, and bolstering our defense will make a big difference in our competitiveness. -

Yeah Kapanen is definitely a bit of a question mark, but I think that's why we would be able to get him in that deal. Interestingly, he has 2 more even strength goals than Boeser, and Kapanen has not been used on the powerplay, which makes me think his style of play is already in abundance on Pittsburgh so he's getting squeezed out. On the other hand, we desperately need someone with speed and (pretty good) hands. Petey and Hughes are both capable of making incredible passes, and if they are able to find Kapanen, he's the type of guy who should be able to get a lot of breakaways. Honestly if Kapanen signs at 3-3.5m/year, its hard to go wrong.
