(Proposal) Armchair GM this offseason
eeeeergh replied to RWJC's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Tbh Myers actually has trade value based on his play this year and the rarity of the position he plays He's likely worth a mid draft pick. I think we unload him if we can sign Manson for 4 - 4.5/year. Manson won't bring Myers' offense, but he'll play a better stay at home defensive game. The Poolman contract isnt going anywhere, so we might as well accept him as our bottom pairing RHD. OEL's contract isn't going anywhere unless he has a Myers-style resurgence, which he has the best chance of doing if we give him a stay at home partner. Karlsson tied Petey's SHL scoring record, I expect he should be able to crack the canucks lineup this coming year and be good value for us on an ELC. Sign Trocheck for 5m/year. Re-sign Kapanen after the trade for 3m/year My ideal moves: 1. Myers out for a 3rd or 4th, Sign Manson at 4.5m/year 2. Boeser & Rathbone to Pittsburgh for Marino and Kapanen 3. Sign Karlsson to an ELC 4. Re-sign Highmore and Lammikko at 1m/year each 5. Sign Vincent Trocheck for 5m/year 6. Sign Spencer Martin for a league minimum deal as Demko's backup 7. Bury Dickinson in minors and recoup 1.6m in cap space - Vastly improved center depth - Trocheck, Manson, Marino improve the penalty kill dramatically - Kapanen is much faster than Boeser and will help our off-the-rush play style - Petey gets quality linemates - Defense goes from one of the worst in the league, to one of the best Pearson-Miller-Garland Kapanen-Petey-Podz Trocheck-Horvat-Hogs Karlsson-Lammiko-Highmore Hughes-Marino OEL-Manson Dermott-Poolman *Schenn, Burroughs -
Agreed. I'm honestly not choked with this trade deadline. Obviously it was quiet, but the last thing we need is management dumping players we plan on keeping for less than market value. Nice to see they created 1.5m in cap space with the Dermott/Hamonic deals, and don't plan on following the Benning template of paying 2.5-3m to fourth liners. I calculate about 4m in cap space created next season, assuming Boeser gets 6.75m/year on a long term deal. If they then start moving one of our biggest pieces like Boeser, Myers, Garland, etc. they should have the cap space to fix the blue line. I'm optimistic.

I think it'd be: Boeser & Rathbone for Kapanen + Marino Dermott solidifies the left side bottom pairing, and we don't need Rathbone's skillset as much as we need Marino's. I think this type of trade becomes more realistic because Pittsburgh is going to need the cap space if they plan on re-signing Rakell. Some cap would need to move, and it COULD be Myers, but I think that'd be predicated on finding our solution in UFA (like Josh Manson for 4.5m/year) so we could save a bit of money and get a mid draft pick for Myers. Myers' NTC goes to a 10 team NTC, so he's far more tradeable in the summer, especially after having such a good year. That entire series of events is basically cap neutral, slightly downgrades our top-6, but significantly upgrades our defense. Maybe Reilly Smith is available as a UFA too? Again cap would have to be moved - we'd have to trade Pearson most likely in order to make room, but our top 6 would look a lot better after that: Smith-Miller-Garland Petey-Bo-Kapanen Podz-Uhaul-Highmore Hogs-Richardson-? Hughes-Marino OEL-Manson Dermott-Poolman *Schenn, Burroughs, Hunt

How did JR/PA do on TDL 2022? (10 being best, 1 being worst)
eeeeergh replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
Gives the current team a chance to still push for the playoffs. Once we're officially out, I'm sure they'll let the young guys come up and get some time -
I mean, we can flip that pick further into the future with another team that wants to add more picks in an earlier draft.. or we could package it with other picks of ours to move higher in the draft.. the idea is that later draft picks can be quite valuable, especially for a team like the Rangers that wants to contend now. However, I also agree with your earlier point that getting prospects back is preferred. Its better to have a known commodity, even if the ceiling is lower, than a lotto ticket imo.

Pretty decent I'd say. A little cap space has been freed up - 77m / 81m assuming Boeser is re-signed at 6.75m/year for multiple years, someone at league minimum takes Motte's place, and Lammikko/Highmore re-sign for 1m each, also assuming Poolman and Dickinson are re-activated off of IR. So roughly 4m in cap space created so far. Myers' NTC changes to a 10 team NTC in July, so I expect that's when they'd try to move him, and use the 10m total space to rebuild the blue line. -
It should have been planned for 2 years in advance. There were options if they were properly prepared. If prepared, they could have got Demko into enough games to showcase his value and then move him just like we moved Schneider so many years ago. Or the year prior, decided on Demko and traded Markstrom to a team that wanted a MVP level goaltender. The TT rental trade was fine IF we had enough prospects and assets remaining, but we haven't. Tanev was one we could have kept if, again, good planning was done in the years leading up. Bennings regime flew by the seat of their pants - taking it 1 year at a time, hoping they'd make the playoffs, and giving up all futures to win now. PA/JR are actually making a plan, and I'm very happy about that.

I don't mean we would draft another Motte - I mean if the asking price at the TDL for a 3rd line energy forward is a 4th rounder, then we've added one that we can use to trade when we're in a position to add to our group at the deadline. My point is the 4th round pick has trade value that'll be useful to us.
-
Losing markstrom/tanev/toffoli for free is the only reason we're in such deep trouble right now. If we had gotten the appropriate assets in return - picks, prospects, etc. We would EASILY be able to package them together with some of our horrendous contracts and free up cap space. Im very happy we saw some responsible asset management today, gives me a lot of faith in the next few years.
-
Fine so he's not signing back here - in which case, why are people so upset? We got something for him. We lost Markstrom, Tanev, and Toffoli for 0 assets in return. If a 4th round pick is the price of getting a Motte type rental (which it seems to be the case based on the other trades that happened today), that's a pick we can use as a trade chip too later on. My point stands - people are just mad b/c their unrealistic expectations didn't happen. This was responsible asset management.

Hamonic was a defenseman in decline on a right side crowded with bottom pairing defensemen - we absolutely needed to get rid of him. Dermott is a young bottom pairing upgrade over Hunt, with upside, and represents 1.5m/year in cap savings. Motte was going to test free agency, we got a comparable return for him that was gotten for Mason Appleton, instead of letting him walk for nothing like GMJB did for Markstrom, Toffoli, Tanev. We have - 1. More cap space 2. A minor, but notable upgrade on defense No other moves needed to be made urgently. It looked like they tried to move Pearson and Halak, but couldn't b/c of the no trade clauses, we can thank GMJB for that. The offseason will likely be much busier when players walk into UFA and they have cap space to take on large contracts. That's where we make our move. -
I'm happy we have a GM that's kind of calculating and emotionally detached. Benning's two biggest issues were his knee jerk reactions that led to overpaying for overrated free agents (Player Name, Myers, etc.) and making decisions without planning out the next couple years of the cap, leading to losing Markstrom, Toffoli, and Tanev FOR FREE. Ugh. Based on these moves, Allvin seems to be the exact opposite of the Benning template.

I think its pretty safe to say that management talked to Motte about his expectations for his new contract before trading him. If he was willing to stick around for 1.5m/year, they would have kept him. But why would Motte do that? He gets one shot to sign a big lucrative contract - Free agency is where he cashes in for all those years of blood sweat and tears, and knowing his injury history, it'll be the only big contract he ever gets. His intention 100% was to test free agency, he doesn't have the luxury top-6 forwards have of already having tens of millions in the bank.
