  1. Motte will go to UFA and a team will offer him 2.5-3m/year. He should absolutely take it b/c with his injury history and style of play, it's probably his one chance to set his family up well. That contract is likely the only lucrative one he'll get to sign in his career. Happy for him, and happy we got something back instead of letting yet another one of our valuable players walk for 0.
  2. I'm genuinely baffled that people are so upset, how tf was this sequence of events not the most obvious and ideal outcome? The only move that was reasonable to expect was the Motte trade. The Hamonic/Dermott deals are just icing on the cake
  3. Nope but he would let him walk out at free agency for nothing and say he "ran out of time" to re-sign him. Lets remember that Benning let the following players go without getting a return: - Markstrom (Vezina caliber goaltender) - Toffoli (top 6 sniper that teams have to pay 2 1st round caliber assets to get) - Tanev (Arguably the best shutdown defenseman in the league)
  4. Exactly this. These are small decisions that add up to being able to make large changes later.
  5. So what? This deal happened b/c either Motte indicated he was going to test free agency (so we got a free asset) or named a price the Canucks werent willing to pay to re-sign him (and we get a free asset). Hard to see how this is an L. People are just upset we didn't trade Miller, Garland, Boeser, Horvat, Petey, Hogs, Pearson, Myers, and OEL for Chytil and the Rangers's late 1st.
  6. He would have indicated he plans on testing free agency in order for this deal to happen, OR the team has plans on building the team without him. Either way, free asset, no complaints.
  7. Soo... Rags wont be re-signing him, he'll be a free agent, we can try to re-sign him if we want him + we got a free 4th round pick. Why are people so mad exactly?
  8. Player name is not Miller, and this is FAR from the last time to be able to trade Miller if we're going to do it. It's better to be patient and wait for the right return, and if the right return isn't out there, make other moves.
  9. Most of the time, trading your best player does not work out well. However, if they got a knock-your-socks-off offer, they would have traded him. The fact that they didn't means they were getting BS offers like "Late 1st, Lundqvist, Chytil". You don't need to trade Miller to create cap space if the plan is to contend in 2-3 years, there are other moves you can make and build around Miller. Gamebreaking centers like Miller that don't get injured are unicorns. We won't be able to replace him if we lose him.
  10. I'm not sure it's time to draw that conclusion. If they're not trading Motte, it means they plan on re-signing him. Other than that, there's no reason they have to take action right now - there will be more buyers in the offseason for our pieces when teams let UFAs walk. Look at the Hamonic to Ottawa trade - we absolutely fleeced Ottawa. They gave us an asset for an overpayed defenseman in decline because they like him. JR/PA should ONLY be trying to take trades like that where they win, or solid hockey deals that don't hinder us in the long run. It's hard to make those types of deals, it takes time and patience. As a side note - a lot of the players that would be obvious moves (Pearson, Myers are my two best examples) have no trade clauses. Moving Boeser right now is difficult because contending teams don't have the cap space for him, and non-contending teams don't want to roll the dice on a pending RFA. We have a better chance of moving him if we're going to in the offseason.
  11. I guess it means Peteys gonna be on the wing for the next little bit?
  12. Id love for Pearson to be moved but it just seems unlikely he'd waive his NTC. He seems to love Vancouver, plus he's married with kids and settled here.
  13. Agreed, I don't think they need to do anything tomorrow. Only thing that seems like a possibility is a deal with Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh probably wants a scoring upgrade for their playoff run
  14. RHD stay at home defenseman, literally exactly what the doctor ordered. Then pry Marino out of Pittsburgh and our defence looks like: Hughes-Marino OEL-Manson Dermott-Poolman Rathbone, Schenn, Burroughs Solid defence, lots of depth.
  15. No worries, got an easy one coming up next in Colorado Should be a freebie
  16. Travis Green is singlehandedly responsible with every misfortune in the world today I am definitely being serious and not at all trolling or being sarcastic in this and my previous comment
  17. Nope, we gave away our future considerations to Tampa for Spencer Martin, and haven't recouped. If anyone wonder why we're losing, we have 0 considerations. Rough time to be a Canuck.
  18. It may be difficult to find teams with cap space to take on one of our large contracts tbh. A lot of the contenders have already made their big moves, finding 5-6m of space for more would be difficult. I suspect if we move anyone tomorrow its Motte, but based on how late in the game it is, I think Boeser stays. Maybe we try moving him in the offseason.
  19. I think I phrased my point wrong - seeing the player is definitely important, chemistry, fit, etc. but ignoring bad analytics is a recipe for disaster. Benning did it repeatedly and everytime he did we ended up losing valuable assets, or way overpaying. The same I believe can be said for passing over a player b/c of a casual eye test, when the numbers tell a different story. From what's been explained, Dermott plays aggressively and challenges the puck carrier, prevents zone entries. It's definitely a higher risk strategy and when it fails he looks horrendous but because it works so often, the numbers work out well and he looks like a net positive to the team.
  20. Myers is the biggest challenge we have on the right side - we need two top-4 right side defensemen that are excellent defensively. Fortunately they can be useless offensively (given who their partners will be) but they need to be good skaters too. Won't be easy. Myers would have to be moved, and we have to find 2 teams willing to part with defensive-minded mobile RHD.
