(Proposals) Push the chips in, Make all the trades

4x 1st round assets was the price to get Eichel out of buffalo, despite the fact that he had already announced he wanted out It’d be a high price but I’d say worth it Carlson is far and away better than anyone else we would draft with any of those picks -

Carlson has franchise player upside though mats sundin caliber player would be an absolute monster for us for the next 15 years and he’s ready to step into the lineup immediately -

That’s the only way this move is justified in my opinion if they weaponize the cap space to get a really good player from a cap strapped team that otherwise would never dream of parting with said player -

I went to a decent number of live games, 7-8 I watched most games though OEL was bad this year, clearly had serious mobility issues. I liked how he ran the powerplay when Hughes was out. overall clearly something was way off with him, he was not the same player that played like a great shutdown defenseman the year prior. the drop off in his play was too severe to be due to natural age-Ing. And he confirmed an injury after the season was over. waiting a year to see if he regained his prior year form was the best move, even if it meant writing off this year -

Need another player moved if they’re gonna add 2x top-4 defensemen and a 3C -
Now we need 2x top-4 defensemen i think Graves in UFA and one of Roy or Peeke via trade - both LA and CBJ have surplus and need cap space after their recent moves

i mentioned this above but if another team bought out OELs contract, and he was a UFA, id 100% be targeting him as a bounce back candidate for like 2x 2.5m or something Worst case scenario he flops as a middle pair, throw him on the third pair or bury him in the minors Best case he plays like a solid #2 LD and runs your 2nd powerplay -

Vegas gambled their way to victory The eichel trade as a good example, absurdly big balls on that gang the moves could easily have not worked out though, they got lucky on some dice rolls for sure -

toronto is desperate, if they dont think they can sign Jarry, theyve gotta look around and see whos offering up an elite goaltender dont think any other team is going to put up a goalie as good as demko and toronto needs a discounted contract like demkos in order to make it work -
So clearly management doesnt have any patience Problem is theyve backed themselves into a corner with this buyout. Theyre clearing enough cap space but incurring a big enough cap hit to improve the club exactly 0%. Id rather they have done nothing, and waited for OEL to rebound, but alternatively, do EVERYTHING Assuming Pearson and Poolman ride LTIR all year long To Toronto: Demko To Vancouver: 2023 1st (Bostons) Knies Niemela (Toronto needs a goaltender and they need it now, no more of this matt murray nonsense) To LA Hoglander 2023 3rd round pick (Torontos) To Vancouver Matt Roy (LA has a glut of young defensemen who can take roy's place and could use the cap space, esp after signing Gavrikov) To Boston: 2023 3rd round pick (Vancouvers) Noah Juulsen To Vancouver: Derek Forbort Boston frees up cap space (they must do so) and gets a decent RD prospect who plays a similar style to forbort To Columbus: Vancouver 2023 1st (11oa) Boston 2023 1st (28oa) Vancouver 2024 1st (unprotected) Vasily Podkolzin To Vancouver: Columbus 2023 1st (3oa) - and draft Leo Carlsson To Arizona: Myers (after bonus is paid) To Vancouver: Future considerations Arizona pays next to no real cash, can retain cap at the deadline, and flip Myers at the deadline to another team for a pick and have him off the books the following year. UFA Signings: Graves (5x5) Acciari (2x 2.5) Jarry (6x6) Lineup next year: Kuzmenko-Petey-Beauvillier Mikheyev-Miller-Boeser Joshua-Carlsson-Garland Studnicka-Acciari-Aman Hughes-Roy Graves-Hronek Hirose-Forbort (Forbort can play the right side) Better lineup and added Niemela + Knies to our prospect pool AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

This would be a very interesting year to do a Demko trade with Jarry available in UFA Demko to the leafs for: 2023 1st (Bostons) Knies Niemela Then we go sign Surrey boy Jarry in UFA Then in the draft we get Moore and Simashev Get er done GMPA -

this is a good point now when we're peddling our wares, teams dont have us bent over a barrel we can sell from a position of strength. -

unironically if another team had let OEL walk id say lets target him for a 2x 2.5 deal worst case you get a very good bottom pair LD for 2.5m best case you get a 2nd pair LD who can run a powerplay for 2.5m Man. -

My bad, lets put Aman on the wing there instead of Studnicka I think Aman is awesome but needs to get better at Faceoffs before hes our full time 4C -

Im not optimistic, but its the only way I see this move being justified If they were ever going to pull off something big like that, its this season when so many teams are cap strapped Boston needs cap space, Forbort is expendable LA has plenty of young RD, Roy is expendable I think 3C and 4C can be filled in UFA, theres enough candidates there But idk. -

Assuming they qualify Bear, they'll have 10 million in cap space (with Pearson + Poolman as LTIR riders) I dont think they can stop here - simply replacing OEL with a 5 million dollar defenseman (Graves) and getting a 3C is not going to make us better. Long run it makes us worse, because we'll be paying a Graves type player 5m + having OELs buyout on the books. They need to push the chips in, clear even more cap, and completely restructure this thing Attach a sweetener or retain something on Garland Launch Myers into the sun (Arizona) after his Bonus is paid Then weaponize the 20 million in cap space to steal good players from Boston, Tampa etc etc. If they can turn this disaster into a lineup with Barbashev & Acciari as 3c and 4c, and exploit LA or Columbus to pick up someone like Roy & Sign Graves, pick up a Forbort from Boston now i think we're talking Kuzmenko-Petey-Beauvillier Mikheyev-Miller-Boeser Joshua-Barbashev-Podkolzin Hoglander-Acciari-Studnicka Hughes-Roy Graves-Hronek Forbort-Bear Doing this buyout for anything short of this outcome is a big disaster. -

When we're contending, its the difference between a Tanner Pearson and an Andrei Kuzmenko Thats a big difference -

We have a better chance of being a contender if we dont throw dead cap on our books during our contention window There were other options with OEL If he rebounded to a 4m level, thats only 3 million dollars of inefficient money for the next 4 years. If he didn't, we could buy him out in a year or two, and have less cap hit OR he could get a case of hossaitis and ride LTIR for the remainder of his contract The NHL is moneyball and these guys just gave themselves an 8 year massive disadvantage in the game Im one to be negative for no reason, half my posts are singing the praises of "GMPA and the hairless compadres". I did a recap post of their work up to this point and actually gave them an A+. But this hurts and feels shortsighted and stupid if we want a stanley cup anytime before 2031. -

i cant figure out why they couldnt at least have waited a year do we know for sure that OEL was going to suck next year? no. He could have rebounded and become at least worth 4 million as a stay at home guy. He made Myers look good only one year ago. Its not like were going for the cup this coming year so what was the harm in running a year of his contract off. Feels like there would have been no downside, only upside (OEL rebounding). Here its only downside. If OEL rebounds with another team, we're the morons who couldn't wait a season. -

my issue with it is when youre contending, you want every dollar of cap space you can to load up its an arms race at the deadline, and teams that managed their cap well get the benefit of buying more weapons we'll go into all of the next 8 years with a 2 million dollar handicap which is significant considering the difference in a 4 million dollar defenseman from a 6 million dollar defenseman
