[Signing] Golden Knights sign Derrick Pouliot
eeeeergh replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
My god I didn't realize how bad Vegas's cap situation is They're completely and totally screwed. -
Agreed, I think they'll wait til the offseason for the big moves. Ive got a feeling theyre not going to be accumulating 1sts, but rather trading for nearly-NHL ready prospects. It looks like the window is within the next 3 years, with Petey, Hughes, and Demko hitting their primes and playing on relatively inexpensive contracts. My speculation: They move Pearson, Myers and Boeser, use the cap space to revamp the defence, use Boeser as a trade chip to land a quality d-man. I think they'll fish around europe to find a pearson replacement that they can bring in for league minimum, and get a (albeit inferior) scorer but hopefully with more speed to replace Boeser from the UFA pool.

I feel like the affect on the teams psyche depends on what they trade for. Obviously if they trade just for futures, then yeah, the teams going to feel like its a rebuilding phase and that management has given up on the season. However, if they make a hockey trade, sending a good forward for a good defenseman, I don't see why that would reflect a lack of belief. I'm sure it would only be done in consultation with Bruce and what he feels the team needs anyway.

JR's TDL and summer moves (Proposals)
eeeeergh replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I mean i dont think its too far off but I think Poolman is probably about 1m overpaid, catch is he still has a bunch of years left on his contract - thats why i think we'd have to give them a pick to take him -

I like them all, but Im not sure why the Stralman trade happens - Stralman and Halak are both UFAs, so Phoenix would just be taking our Poolman contract. I imagine we have to give them something if we want them to take it. -
Very rude tbh. Glad we have Shorthouse and Garrett, our guys are classy.

Good deal for both teams, would do it absolutely

Proposal-Best trade scenario
eeeeergh replied to Paul-walker's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I dont see why Pittsburgh does this. Try something like: Boeser + Poolman, for Marino & 2nd New York isn't paying for Myers either, nobody is, unless we retain some salary. -
Hearing he's ripping it up in Tampa rn, while all we got is an AHL goalie. Sad.
-
hes a defensively tragic offensive-minded player who isnt putting up points anymore, any of our ahl top producers are better options for us
-
naw, hasn't been in a long time

[Discussion/Proposal] Refill the Prospect Cupboards
eeeeergh replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Myers has been okay but neither he nor OEL is good enough defensively for them to be paired together imo. They're both offensive minded defensemen, and its kind of telling that OEL has been taken off the PK. We've seen how good OEL is at driving play and making things happen offensively if he's given the offense-first role, but when he's paired with Myers, it seems both of them have to really focus on not messing up, rather than driving play. Hamonic is fine imo - he blocks a lot of shots, hits, etc. Im not sure how long he'll be around though after what happened this year -
[Discussion/Proposal] Refill the Prospect Cupboards
eeeeergh replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Oh and I forgot about our stud goalie prospect - Spencer Martin!! I think the other reason I'm not too worried is on the whole our team is pretty young. Tanner Pearson at 29 is the only one we probably have to worry about replacing, and that's 3 years from now if we don't trade him. Plenty of time to find more free agents, and draft some good players this year. Our defense is more of a concern but we aren't solving that problem with prospects. It would take way too long, and it's not bottom pairing guys we're hurting for, we need 2 RHD to play in the top 2 pairs ASAP -
Agreed we shouldn't sell low, but our defense is definitely not good enough. Demko is stealing games for us, even the ones where he lets in 3 goals, because we're giving up way too many high danger scoring chances. We need at LEAST one more top-4 RHD, someone close to as good defensively as Tanev. Realistically, we should have 2 of them, because as good as Schenn has been, he's too slow to play against speedy teams. 1 top-4 defenseman to play with Hughes, 1 to play with OEL. Meaning Myers would have to be shipped out to make room. We'd likely need to trade a top tier forward like Boeser to make it all happen.

[Discussion/Proposal] Refill the Prospect Cupboards
eeeeergh replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Cupboards aren't actually empty tbh. - Aidan Mcdonough, top 3 leading scorers (goals) in NCAA - Linus Karlsson 0.5 goals per game in the SHL, nearly hitting Petey's SHL rookie record - Rathbone- NHL ready LHD offensive defenseman Those are 3 very very good prospects, and you're right, adding a couple european or college free agents adds to the pool very nicely. -
[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Toronto Maple Leafs | Mar. 05, 2022
eeeeergh replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Great post. Totally agree. Hughes and OEL are great #1 and #2, but both need support from more shutdown oriented guys. Fortunately, shutdown oriented guys do come a bit cheaper than guys that can put up lots of points. There are also more of them available, as it's a role that older defensemen will sometimes transition to as their game slows down a bit. Myers is actually a really interesting asset - in his final contract year, his AAV will be 6m but his actual salary owed will only be 1m. That makes him an attractive target for teams that are looking to stay cap compliant but want to minimize their actual spend. Combined with pretty decent play this year, I think there's a chance we may not have to part with any assets to move him. -
That's a fair comparison imo, LK is a couple years younger than Rodin was when he was putting up those numbers, but you're not wrong - his game may or may not translate. Im excited to see him at training camp though!
-
All correct imo, only thing I'd say is Severson is probably the hidden gem - he's been way better defensively than most would expect, his analytics are mindblowingly good, considering he's had to be the #1 shutdown guy for while this season. He's also an excellent penalty killer. Totally agree re: gudbranson and zadorov, I think they look way better than they actually are b/c of Sutter's system and the support they get from their forwards. I'd like to see them be patient and pick up one of the RHD from free agency - I think you're right, Mayfield would be a great pickup in the defensive-defenseman role. I'd like to see them try for a trade for Severson, or Oleksiak - I like Oleksiak b/c he can play on the right or the left side, he's an absolute mountain, and pretty much as pure of a shutdown guy as it gets. To acquire either of those two, we'd likely have to give up a good prospect, a draft pick, and a roster player. We actually have 2 very good prospects outside of Rathbone right now - Linus Karlsson and Aidan McDonough- one of them + a high draft pick + a roster player. Hughes-Mayfield OEL-Oleksiak/Severson Rathbone-Hamonic Burroughs, Woo, Hunt, etc. Very balanced defense core, and one thing I like about having a LHD that can play on the right like Oleksiak is it gives us more PK options.
-
The biggest challenge is where they decide to open the contention window There isn't really a clear and obvious time, b/c if we wait til Myers/Dickinson/Poolman/Pearson contract is up, we then owe raises to Pettersson and Horvat, and we're getting close to Demko's contract renewal (he'll be due for a 4m raise if he keeps playing like this). If JR/PA want to contend in 2 years and have enough cap space for the renewals after, they're going to both: 1) take a huge swing by moving out quality players + our bad contracts 2) find great value free agents My guess is they move out Boeser, Myers, Poolman, Dickinson, and ofc dont resign Halak. If all that happens, that should give us 23-24m in cap space. Miller gets his 3m raise + Hogs probably gets at least 1-2m more. 20m left to do the following: - Pay a top pairing RD defender to play with Hughes (Schenn isnt sustainable)- 7m/year - Pay a top four RD defender to play with OEL (someone more defensively responsible than Myers)- 4m/year (Oleksiak comparable) - Bottom pairing defender to play with Rathbone (maybe re-sign Hamonic for 1.5m) - Top 6 forward - 3C that can kill penalties Only reason I saw Boeser gets moved is they'll need to part with a quality asset if they want to ship out Myers, Poolman, Dickinson.
-
Rathbone is over a point per game pace in the AHL, he's a top tier grade a prospect who will likely end up quarterbacking an NHL team's powerplay. He's also extremely intelligent, and whatever he lacks in defensive responsibility he can be mentored by Hughes into developing. This trade is very lopsided in favor of LA - Rathbone is more valuable than Clarke, and Boeser is far more valuable than Helenius.

AHHHHHH WHATS GOING ON

You're 100% correct, quality of opposition skews these numbers, and Ekman-Larsson has had to play all the shutdown minutes. He's not among the best in limiting high danger scoring chances, but it's hard to pin that on just 1 man, when its a combination of: the forward group, whether you play on the PK or not, who you're matched up against, etc. But there are some names that stand out as top performers in this area who also play against top lines- the types of names that would actually be big difference makers if we were to land one or two of them. - Calvin De Haan: plays on the top pair in Chicago, runs the penalty kill and the powerplay. Upside: UFA this year. Downside: left side. - Damon Severson: plays the shutdown minutes on the right side for NJD, runs penalty kill 1, also runs one of the powerplay units. He's put up a ton of points this year too, which is kind of unfortunate, because his value is going to be inflated. I think this is the guy we really want if we can get him out of New Jersey. If we can upgrade Myers for a partner for OEL that is better defensively, that'll be the matchup pair that can effectively shut down top lines, and improve our PK. One thing's for sure - OEL has been a pleasant surprise and if he can keep playing like he has been + is given more defensive support, he's not that far off from providing his contracts value.
