[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Toronto Maple Leafs | Mar. 05, 2022

It depends largely on the timeline that PA and JR decide on. If they figure the Canucks are going to contend 4-5 years from now, JT gets traded. If the plan is to go for it 2 years from now, they're keeping JT. -

We cant afford to lose him. And Boeser can probably be signed to a pretty reasonable contract b/c of his production this year. I dont think we're going to get our cap room by moving those two. -
By far our most defensively responsible defenseman. Near the top of the league in goals against/60 minutes. He's getting help from Demko though, here are the leaders in limiting high danger scoring chances:

Unfortunately, we really need 2 defensive-minded defensemen, both for the right side. Someone like Oleksiak might be available if Seattle wants to do a real rebuild (we'd have to give up a young asset or a draft pick) - he can play both left and right side. Maybe one of Siegenthaler or Severson from New Jersey as well. It's not actually totally out of the realm of possibility to add guys like this from a cap perspective, it looks like the typical cost of a really solid defensive defenseman (Oleksiak, Tanev, etc.) is about 4-4.5m/year. We'd need to move Myers, and try to cap dump Dickinson, but the space could be made. There's probably a deal to be made for Myers with a team that's really lacking in RHD that doesn't involve us giving up any assets to move him, he's actually played to his contract value this year (just not at all what we need). Then like you mentioned, we need a forward. We actually do have 4 centers which is good - Miller, Pettersson, Horvat, Lammikko, and it's nice to see BB using them on all different lines. Getting 1 C/W whos a penalty killing stud (Beagle and Sutter were never replaced) is also what we need. A defence like: Hughes-Oleksiak OEL-Severson Rathbone-Hamonic Looks well balanced with 3 offensive defenseman, and 3 defensive. For penalty killing, Oleksiak slides to the left side and plays with Severson as your top PK pair. OEL and Hamonic are the second. -
Miller's next contract (Discussion)

It really sucks that we didnt have anyone in the front office that cared about analytics because there were some really good options we could have gone after. Oleksiak is almost as good as Tanev defensively in preventing high danger scoring chances, is near the best in the league, and plays both left and right side. His contract also ended up being only 4.6m/year. He's also huge and uses his size. Ugh. We could have picked him up in free agency. -

It's going to be interesting to see where PA gets the necessary cap room from to actually improve the team. Our defense is collectively among the worst in the league in allowing high danger scoring chances against. Myers and Poolman are particularly bad in that area, and Hunt really shouldn't be playing as an NHL regular. If he can find a way to move Myers and Poolman, that frees up 8.5m, but we probably need at least 13-14m to properly retool the defence. -

Wdym? The way they get out of the zone is all different - I never saw that chip off the glass play under Green They go north WAY faster under Boudreau, under Green the D would pass it back and forth a bunch of times and they'd slowly try to move it forward Forecheck under green sent in like 1 guy who would inevitably lose And I can remember 1 too many men on the ice penalty under Boudreau, we took like 6-7 that I remember under Green Lets face it - the coaching was absolutely fking horrendous -

Doesnt even look like the same team. Systems all different. Weird too how all those too many men on the ice penalties disappeared once our coaching staff was overhauled. Makes you wonder just how asleep at the wheel the coaches were.- 714 replies

Agreed. The way he plays he's still going to be effective for a long while. Enough time to get 1-2 shots at the cup -

Please no, anywhere but Calgary. If he goes there, he'll be a top pairing defenseman by next year. -
[Discussion] Examining how good this team actually is
eeeeergh replied to VegasCanuck's topic in Canucks Talk
Generally I agree but there are some significant deficiencies on the team - we have some defenders who are smart but slow (like Schenn) who get beat by faster forwarders - we have some defenders who make horrible hairbrained decisions that create golden scoring chances for other teams (Myers, Poolman) - We need some more speed in our top six. Boeser and Pearson are slow, and Pearson's shooting percentage is bad. - We need a better penalty kill (though I suspect thats solved by upgrades on defence). -

I hope they retain Motte - part of what makes our fourth line so good is that Motte and Lammer actually have really good hands aside from being fast. Lammer put up really impressive offensive numbers for Karpat, and has shown the ability to finish here. Motte's had some beautiful breakaway goals over the past couple years too -

I mean.. we're playing one of the worst teams in the NHL, without their best player, and using their backup goaltender. And we're barely making it work. -

[Proposal] Getting Creative Using ARZ

Arizona doesn't want players - they want picks, and players that have high salary cap hits but low actual salary commitments, so they can ice a team but pay as little actual $ as possible. -

(Proposal) Van-Tor, Van-NJ, Van-Was, Van-Ari, Van-CBJ
eeeeergh replied to eeeeergh's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Their problems are on the right side - giordano is a lhd. us retaining 1m on Myers puts myers down at 5m which is actually good value for them. Their right side ends up looking very solid with both Muzzin and Myers. Also wdym years to come? Myers is only under contract for 1 more season after this one. -

Toronto said they are willing to take someone on with term if it fills a need And their blue line is deficient, with or without Muzzin -
Surprised this topic isnt getting more activity, those are extremely impressive SHL stats. Theres a good chance he competes for a roster spot and just skips Abby entirely.
