Totally! Save positional drafting for potentially around 3 or 4 and onwards. BPA is absolutely the best option for the first 3 rounds.

Good points. I guess it depends where his camp feels he’d have the best chance of TOI and fit. Considering he was paired with QH at times last season, they may choose to re-sign here as he expressed relief to be out of previous clubs. With news of shoulder issues, his value is displaced a bit. Hard to say. Brings good value to a certain cap hit level but really hasn’t proven anything as of yet either.

One option would be to sign Bear to a low AAV 2 year deal, play him in bottom rotation, and then trade him at next years deadline to recoup some value. He would still have another season afterwards and could provide low cost depth to a contender next seasons playoffs. I realize the impetus is to create cap space now, but that should be derived primarily from moving out a F contract or two (essentially because the two applicable D contracts are more difficult propositions at this time). What should be part of the process going forward is minimizing excess and waste across the board. Even fetching a 5th rounder in return for Bear is worthwhile, and the depth value he brings to the team in the interim is something we also seem to need at some point in every season.

Some names that may be of interest to Nux fans: Devils Notes: Wood, Bahl, Boqvist June 10th, 2023 at 5:00pm CST • By Ethan Hetu With two major restricted free agents to negotiate contract extensions with in Timo Meier and Jesper Bratt, it’s no surprise that the New Jersey Devils may be forced to say goodbye to some familiar faces. Damon Severson, a quality blueliner with over 600 games played as a Devil, was traded yesterdayand, according to recent reporting, another veteran Devil could follow him out the door: Miles Wood. The Hockey News’ Kristy Flannery relays wordfrom Wood’s agent, Peter Fish, “that there has been no communication” with Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald on a possible Wood contract extension. While it’s likely that the Devils would ideally like to keep Wood, their salary cap situation and other existing needs are likely to force his exit in free agency. As a result, Fish and Wood are preparing to hit the open market on July 1st. Wood will hope to find the right contract in his first trip to unrestricted free agency, and after scoring 13 goals and 27 points this past season his rare combination of size and speed could be of interest to other teams. Some other notes about the Devils: Flannery’s article also contained updates on the status of restricted free agent defenseman Kevin Bahl, whose $795k contract is set to expire. The soon-to-be 23-year-old emerged as a lineup regular for the Devils later in their season and is widely expected to be a part of the team’s blueline mix next season. Given that he has just 66 games of NHL experience, Bahl’s next contract shouldn’t break the bank, though the defensive upside the hulking six-foot-six Bahl possesses could be factored into the equation as well, potentially raising the price tag of any new deal. Bahl’s agent, David Gagner, confirmed to Flannery that he and Fitzgerald “are engaging in preliminary talks,” and it could be that the Devils would prefer to get some cost certainty on Bahl’s next deal before finalizing the Meier/Bratt contracts. 24-year-old forward Jesper Boqvist‘s agent Peter Wallen relayed to Flannerythat “there has been no communication with Fitzgerald and the Devils” on any new contract as of five days ago. Boqvist emerged as a lineup regular this past season scoring 10 goals and 21 points in 70 games. The 2017 36th overall pick has scored well at lower levels and the Devils are likely hoping to retain him on an affordable deal so they can fill out some depth roles in their lineup with young, energetic homegrown players such as Boqvist on cheaper contracts.

Here’s the rub for me…Bear simply plays a more consistent NHL level game than the majority of any of the #6/7/8 Dmen we have auditioned. That’s it though. It’s a low standard unfortunately. There is a reason he was had from teams with reasonable D depth. I like him, but here’s hoping we increase our own depth so that players like Bear are reserved as serviceable call-ups as and when necessary. Would be really great to see this club have players that don’t have to play above their talent level because we have no other tangible option. Those days must come to an end for this club to move forward.

Well it appears we’ve already lost Schenn as he’s indicated he wants to extend in TO. I hear what you’re saying. What it comes down to is what is available for the right price on the market or what is being groomed from within. Wanting a younger, quicker grit guy to slide into a regular lower level role is optimal…but I’d argue that the majority of NHL clubs would be looking for exactly that. Look at the prices paid for them too. Tanner Jeannot says hello. it’s rare finding guys like him or an Arber Xhekaj, but if we can develop that internally it would be great. We just don’t have anyone on that level yet that can play a regular NHL shift. Hence why, when it comes down to it, unless we secure something by trade or someone takes a major step forward this offseason, our best bet is to secure a stop gap experienced guy with rep who still holds a commanding presence in the league. I wouldn’t want to pay much for Lucic, and he’s made his money so I don’t think he’d be greedy given where his career is at now. It could be a good fit, local boy comes home to finish his career. I think he’d be embraced by fans too. We’ve missed a true “policeman” on this club, and in part is a reason why Schenn was so revered by the fanbase. Is it still necessary? I’d argue yes, especially when your top talent is on the slighter side of stature. Look at our history…we’ve always employed a deterrent. Sure the NHL has evolved but that role has sustained as a requirement when your competition necessitates it. Look who we have behind our bench now. Between the coaching staff and a guy like Looch, confidence and grit is developed organically. Anyway, im mostly playing devil’s advocate. I don’t like his foot speed, but he still has a role in the NHL, albeit diminishing. He can still play though, his hands aren’t as bad as ppl go on about, and he could be a net front presence on a modified PP2. If he comes cheap, he’s worth a shot.
-
It’s not a waste of a roster spot though. In losing Schenn this team lost a large percentage of its toughness. If we can replace that with a few more physical, gritty types in the bottom 6 and 1 on D then we’re going a long way towards building a playoff club. we have been previously constructed for the regular season. That’s not good enough. Look at the clubs who have advanced in this years playoffs and name the common denominators. One of them is the ability to play a physical, heavy game. That’s not the prerequisite but an option. We should be building a club that can play and perform in variable circumstances, including being able to wear down an opponent, not just play a flashy game and hope to avoid contact. It won’t work. part of the balance still requiring to be established with this club is a well articulated roster. Currently it’s heavily weighted towards being an offensively skilled team. We are still a long way from having the heart and soul, integrity guys who carry you through the playoffs. migjht not like Lucic, but he is a warrior, and playoffs require warriors.
-
I would offer him a PTO in a heartbeat. then potentially sign him to a 1 year 775K deal. if we were to make the jump to playoffs, he’s is exactly the type of character this club might need to round out the roster. People forget how valuable a physical presence is in the post, especially against clubs who will most likely be grittier than ours. He may not have the speed, but he does bring value, imho

Found this proposal quite hilarious. Why can’t these pundits ever consider actual team need in these proposals?!? From Yahoo: https://ca.yahoo.com/sports/news/nhl-what-could-the-maple-leafs-trading-mitch-marner-look-like-194933999.html Canucks trade C/W J.T. Miller, G Thatcher Demko, RHD Ethan Bear, 2024 first-round pick for RW Mitch Marner and G Ilya Samsonov Money in: $15.5 million* Money out: $14.7 million** *Bear (RFA) projected at $2.5M **Samsonov (RFA) projected at $3.8M Why it works: Vancouver might see this deal as an opportunity to cash in Miller for a player whose age matches the team's core better as Marner just turned 26 while the Canucks star is about to enter his age-30 season. Marner and Elias Petterson could be one of the NHL's best dynamic duos, and upgrading from Miller to Marner would only cost the Canucks a puck-moving defenseman who's never topped 21 points, a slight downgrade in goal and a first-round pick in a year they should be more competitive. The Maple Leafs would get the dynamic second line-driving center they need as well as a goaltender with a stronger track record than Samsonov. Demko had a rough 2022-23, but in the previous two years he posted a .915 save percentage with a GSAA mark of +23.1. Samsonov, on the other had, was a below average goaltender prior to 2022-23 and the team may not want to pay up for 42 games of strong work (2.33 GAA, .919 SV%) followed by a middling playoff run. Samsonov is a year younger than Demko and has first-round pedigree as the 22nd overall pick in 2015. Bear is more than a throw-in for Toronto as he could carve out a role on a squad that is short on right-shot defenseman, or flip him for another asset. While his offensive numbers don't jump off the page, he knows what to do with the puck and has posted a positive Relative Corsi For in each of the last four seasons. He can also kill penalties and his next contract is unlikely to be too lucrative. Possible hangups: Miller has a NMC that could render this idea moot, but he may see the Maple Leafs as a team in a better competitive situation than the Canucks. Both goalies in the deal have careers that are difficult to interpret and each club would have to feel comfortable with the incoming netminder. That would mean Vancouver liking Samsonov to keep his momentum rolling and Toronto seeing a likely bounce back from Demko. The Maple Leafs would also need to feel confident in Miller's medicals as they'd be getting most of his 30s with an $8 million cap hit attached to him through 2029-30. Treliving has rarely been scared off by a long-term deal, though, and Miller has been durable throughout his 11-year career.

IIRC, Friedman previously posted (in March I think) that the Nux enquired with LA about C Turcotte’s availability at the TDL. Would not surprise me if we make a trade to acquire a young, promising, former early round pick like that as one type of the additions we can expect this offseason. I wouldn’t want to part with him, but we could package Demko and 11th for Clarke and Turcotte (maybe?). Then sign Jarry to a short term contract in offseason. Demko would probably be a big loss in the room though too. Otherwise, I’m sure there are other options to accommodate such a trade.

Buffalo looking at Hellebuyck. WPG will be interesting to watch…lots of “core” pieces potentially on the hot seat.
-
I imagine Murray, Kerfoot + would be heading back in a package deal from both sides if anything. Lot of pundits believe it’ll be Samsonov/Woll tandem going into next season and that makes a lot of sense. But Hart is only 24 and still oozes a lot of potential, and given the Laffs need another shake up and will get it with Treliving, at least they should be discussing options. Def a few teams who should be enquiring about Hart. He’s a potential stud.

[Proposal] Miller + 11OA to Columbus for 3OA
RWJC replied to Coconuts's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Methinks you have to at least add a future 1st from our end to even get that convo prompted. 30 other teams will be coveting 3rd overall and with a flat cap, there may be better value than JTM’s term deal at the moment unfortunately. -
I hear that. We should be risking a couple decent picks each year drafting for positional need, imho. Always use your top picks for BPA, but at least build asset and positional depth with the latter ones. Like you expressed, I’m not fond of trying to acquire high value positional pieces through trade because of inflated cost. But if you can secure a couple pieces (at the total cost of the cap hit you just dumped) that might develop into the C/D you need within a year or two’s time, then that is simply an acceleration of draft capital and basic commodity economics. Even as an alternate method, the fanbase is a little tired when it comes to this franchise’s agenda. That said, at least we have some intriguing prospects that legitimately have a shot at the bigs. and that label is no longer just because we are desperate to pin high hopes on someone/anyone to help alleviate real concerns about the lack of any tangible prospect pool. there is progress with this club. Just incrementally. And it does involve some hardship now and in the future ($) to realize it, but fleshing out a roster that revolves around this young core group will require turnover and some sacrifice in every capacity, including future cap penalties. If OEL has a further down year and can’t be dealt, I expect he will be gone by next season. It’s just too much money in the now that restricts soooooo many other potential opportunities. That’s just reality.
-
Agreed, but there is one very reasonable caveat to cost dumping contracts which is having shopping space in the short term because you never know who or what will come available to market that fits a 5 year fundamental need (eg. 3rd line C, top 3-4 RD). How else do you build the foundation to become a playoff team other than marinating draft picks and hoping that concept eventually works out in the same time frame? Remember who owns this club…from one perspective it’s great because we will always spend to cap (or over) to try and be competitive. On the other hand, there is no patience, just business, and an urgency to manufacture a club rather than let it build organically. Given we know the mandate, it’s to be expected that a buyout will come to fruition if need be and that money already earmarked for a replacement. May not be a winning strategy at all as proven to a degree as of late, but, it’s at least better than being lame duck and content in that situation.

That’s the NHL brass’ responsibility and they failed to competently and accurately punish CHI for something so disgusting and disturbing. This has nothing to do with Bedard or anyone else in the current climate, save for the pricks who were on the roster at the time and looked the other way. if you want to chastise someone, go after Kane or Toews, not someone who has absolutely nothing to do with what occurred. What’s spineless is placing your concept of justice on the back of someone who has no previous connection to the franchise at all and then pre-judging them if they follow through on what is a professional obligation. Focus your energy. You’re totally misfiring here.
-
Spineless? They will draft him and own his rights for up to 7 years if they want to. Kid played and ruled at hockey his entire life to finally perform at the NHL level, and he’s spineless to you if he shows loyalty to whomever drafts and gives him an opportunity to fulfill the dream that he’s more than earned? go figure I don’t like that he’s going to CHI either but it ain’t his fault what happened with that franchise so perhaps reevaluate how you look at this…?

The Fresh Prince bitchslapped his way to number 2, hey? Crazy.

Great perspective Nucker. We’re going to hopefully add another potentially elite piece to our now vastly and rapidly improving cupboard of talent. It’s alllll good.
