Because you might lose him to CGY or a Cali based team prior to. He’d round out the top 9 quite well and would solidly it enough that the focus could be entirely on assessing a d upgrading D over this season and into next years UFA period.

Canucks First-Round Draft Pick in Play “TSN’s Darren Dreger told WGR 550 Friday that the Vancouver Canucks are open to trading the No. 9 overall pick in Friday’s draft. Among the teams potentially looking at that selection, the Buffalo Sabres are a team that wants to add more picks. It will be interesting to see how many first-round selections are moved in today’s draft. With less scouting opportunities available, some NHL executives believe teams will miss hard on players who wind up being terrible picks. This might be the year to move a first-rounder and if you can accomplish other things, like the Canucks are trying to do, you do it.” Coming from Darren “Dregs” Dreger so bear that in mind, hah.

[Rumor] Nate Schmidt being dealt very soon any minute now

When given chances and the player continues to underperform to your expectations as coach or GM, sometimes it’s just best to move on and utilize the roster space and cap. Virtanen falls into the same category. Myers and Nolan the same thing. Ghost in the (haunted)doghouse because of his own defensive miscues. The draft picks are the real loss, imho.

[Rumor] Nate Schmidt being dealt very soon any minute now

Some things to keep in mind with regard to Ristolainen as a solid option for a D slot: ”Ristolainen makes $5.4MM and is a year away from free agency. Sabres 5v5 shot/goal difference with and without Ristolainen the last three years: With: -5.6 shots/hour -0.78 goals/hour W/O: -0.8 shots/hour -0.35 goals/hour In his defence, the TOI tends to be tough. In other words, goal differential has been more than twice as bad with Ristolainen on the ice. Shot differential goes from almost break-even to minus-6 per hour.” -

I would love to see us make some aggressive moves this off-season but if it doesn’t materialize to most of our liking by puckdrop, so be it. Urgency rarely results in actualizing the best outcomes. There will always be a market for Schmidt. I kinda hope now we can keep him, give him the requisite practice time with a dedicated partner and see what develops. If there still seems to be incompatibility by Xmas, explore trade. What if we kept Schmidt and tried or sign a Savard as UFA. Or trade a decent draft pick for a Jake Bean or Zadorov. I think that should be our route first. Suddenly our D corps has some real depth and looks great on paper. We have some money to do this with buyouts. FA spends to cap. Regardless, I think a few teams will be in the same situation as us in terms of analyzing their rosters, especially the new additions, and figuring things out. It’s not like trades don’t occur during the course of the season. Happens every year. I know it’s not as exciting because we all want to see upgrades and modifications now, but Schmidt could turn into a very nice compliment to the top 4 D given a typical preseason and practice time! perhaps even the 1st line Dman he was projected to be when brought in. Plus with Shaw in the fold you just never know how much that will improve a player’s effectiveness. -

Or Bettman has instructed GMs not to leak any trade info yet so that it can be intermittently announced through first and second days of draft. Arouse excitement. If there’s been action today all management teams would know. Seeing as they really wanted to the expansion draft telecast to be exciting, and it all leaked out ahead of time, I would t put it past Bettman to orchestrate something like this for the ratings. I’m sure Sportnset and the other networks wouldn’t mind it either. -

The thing that would concern me is the type of game Hyman plays leads to injury. The way you pro-rated his history lends more to how his agent would argue for him, but if I was a GM in negotiations I’d argue that he’s approaching 30 years old, playing a taxing style of game on a body that has previous issues, and as he gets older, that wear and tear has much more of an effect, even exponentially. If he wants term, and gets it, it’s a gamble. A big one. If I was a Coiler fan I’d be stressed. That he’s going to get injured at a time when he’s needed most, like a stretch run for playoff positioning, or even in the playoffs themselves. Times when players up their play level and push their own limits. I understand market value, but Imho I just think he’s not worth it even at a low AAV. Year 2 or year 3 he will visibly decline from the level and style of play he is accustomed to and has had success with. I just can’t see his body keeping up.
