[Rumor] Nate Schmidt being dealt very soon any minute now
RWJC replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Would anyone do Schmidt + 9OA for Bean and Foegle? Not sure CAR would but that’s a trade that could really help the Nux right now and going forward. -
(Rumour) Rangers to trade for Giordano after ED

I hear and appreciate what you’re saying. I still am of the belief though that in a lot of cases certain GMs were praying to all the gods that certain players left exposed were taken by Seattle. It’s not so much they want to lose the player, and directly create a positional need, but more so want the freedom from the contracts. I wonder what would actually happen if the Skinner, Johansen, Duchene types were waived though, at their current cap hit and term, in this cap climate? I’d gamble the majority would still go unclaimed. There just isn’t the money to go round, nor the ability to easily restructure your roster, to gamble on finding a fit for the underperforming and overpaid. I think there are a lot of players who fall into this category. We have our own versions in Eriksson and perhaps even Virtanen. The only market that exists for these players is one where you suffer an additional loss to get rid of them. I don’t know, I am likely totally wrong with my thought process and POV but regardless of what Seattle’s intention was/is on how to utilize their cap, whomever was made available for them to take, for whatever reasons, they were still up for grabs from the free pile. That includes a few top line players. Again, you have exceptions like some UFAs - players like Ovi who would just hold out for the next week or so until UFA period and then re-sign with the Caps, but those are exceptional situations. Francis could have gone to cap with his picks, but that would have involved doing “favours” for other teams in cap crunches. He didn’t bite. Why, simply because those type players are not worth it - not worth the contract value or term, nor the roster space they would occupy at that price point. Simply put, non-desireable and therefore expendable. -

Dude, how does it feel to know you were just traded to the Kraken for Larsson and a 1st? -

Was the beer laced with anything else? PCP perhaps? JK This likely will not occur in this dimension or any other. -

Why has Voracek’s name come up in trade rumours? JVR? Johanssen? Duchene? Subban? Skinner? Domi? Etc etc These are players that were once considered franchise cornerstone players and yet the team is looking to move on from each of them. Sure a couple players were calculated risks, but for the most part what you saw was what each team considers its core group going forward. That motivates some players on the outside to become better and it causes other to want a change of scenery. Think about it…you’re earning 7+ mill on a term contract and your team leaves you exposed to an expansion team starting from scratch. At 7+ mill you’re paid for expected performance and leadership. You’re paid that much because you are supposed to be part of that core. Instead, and quite obviously the team couldn’t trade you prior to that protection list to recoup assets for the loss of you. That means other teams don’t even value you high enough for the money to want to acquire you, let alone protect you as part of their core. Then the expansion team passes on you. How would you feel? For some I guess they couldn’t care less because they have a guaranteed contract. Maybe it’s just me but I’d be embarrassed as hell. Anyway, when I say expendable it’s not applicable to everyone who was available (eg. Ovy, Price, etc) but hard to argue a player isn’t expendable when your team basically says you can have them for free. -

To me it’s not so much a game of chicken as a garage sale advertisement of who each team deemed expendable. It’s a bit of a glimpse for us fans as to who and what could be available by trade, and a bit embarrassing for some of the upper tier players too. -

Yeah and after being traded he’ll likely go back to being this: -
He’s not a simpleton. I think what’s happening is he’s trying to suffocate options for other GMs so that there becomes a highly competitive marketplace in trying to land a partner for the cap dump. He will squeeze everything he can out of any GM that is trying to ship off a Tarasenko by reducing their options to either trade bad money for bad money or accept losses (eg. Future picks) to mitigate another loss. The big thing to consider too is teams having to be cap compliant. Most will likely want to rid themselves of cap ASAP so that they can effectively plan for this off-season (resign players) and move forward. I think SEA will only benefit hand over fist if this is what was Francis’ intention and why he selected who he did in the ED.
-
I think where you’ll see premium being paid out is the next round of moves where teams really try to dump cap/term. Francis budgeting for that and probably salivating too.
-
Maybe if you sign the UFAs that teams are most interested in you take them off the market and offer up in trade after the fact. I’m sure some teams were hoping to go the UFA route to tinker/upgrade their roster, especially as you don’t have to lose anything to obtain a player, and now Francis has taken some assets away that he has identified as having best market value. Francis maybe has a two sided game plan. Some decent signings with experience for the azzKraks or some attractive commodities as trade bait. Nice cheap signing with Larsson. Avg payout for what Oleksiak would get as UFA, imho. Driedger at a good deal. Flip side is it doesn’t really benefit the player though so I guess we will have to see. And the other caveat to this is publicly introducing guys like Driedger, Oleksiak, Gio as Kraken which seems like it nullifies any potential dangle as trade bait. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see what they do from here on out to really formulate a starting roster.

Interesting that they introduced Giordano to the crowd/world personally if he’s tentatively supposed to be traded. Seems odd. -
[Signing] Kraken sign Jamie Oleksiak
RWJC replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
To me what’s interesting is that the Krakheads won’t actually have their own AHL minor league team until next season with Palm Springs. For now their player development is with Charlotte on an affiliate deal. I wonder how this has impacted their ED selections, if at all. Anyway, some more detail: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.thenewstribune.com/sports/article252421973.html -
Apparently Giordano and Strome in play between Rangers and Kraken: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/nypost.com/2021/07/21/kraken-draft-may-include-rangers-strome-giordano-twist/amp/

(Signing) Mike Smith signs 2 year, 2.2mill extension in EDM
RWJC replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Trimmed armpit hair and some gorilla glue? He has the option of a tight and curly beard too and I have just made myself ill thinking about this. Anyway, I guess it depends what’s in style. -
(Rumour) Kaprizov tendered significant offer from KHL's CKSA Moscow
RWJC replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That’s the point. It’s leverage. The argument isn’t so much that he could leave, it’s more so what its finally going to cost the Wild to sign him now and how does that impact them financially going forward. Guerin needs to cost control after the buyouts. He overpays his rookie and then comparables are drawn against that by other RFA/UFAs on the team at the time of their negotiations. It’s the residual effect that could be painful. Imagine if you will that Podz breaks out and becomes important to the future of the Nux, then gets tendered a major offer by a KHL team when his ELC expires. If a guy like Boeser or even a QH or Petey at the end of their bridge deals sees Podz has been resigned on a short term deal for a high AAV in order to keep him here, their agents will use that like a rabid dog in any future negotiations for their client. Overpaying for a rookie and/or giving them the opportunity to cash in at UFA status is poor optics and like I said, only provides leverage against the respective team and creates distance between ownership and the players who have already been part of the team and in turn become underpaid in contrast. It’s the valuation process that becomes impacted. All depends what he signs for, imho -
Something tells me there is a major move being attempted or in the works with EDM. There is no way McD or LD can be happy with this off-season so far so maybe some major pieces are still to come? This potential Hyman sign and trade back to TOR makes me wonder if there’s a top F coming back as part of a larger package deal from both sides

[Report] Canucks won’t protect Kole Lind

Need a team captain and PR guy. -
True but could rotate him in and out of all 3 lines really. QH Schmidt could be interesting given more time to practice together (none last year for anyone) but I’m still hoping for significant upgrades.
-
That’s not all that bad and I appreciate what you’re proposing. I think that D is still a little thin myself, but your numbers seem to work out and adds solid depth to the F group. Not bad, man. When you post like this it’s totally constructive and shows the depth behind the criticism. Like I said, much appreciated.
-
Okay, fair enough, that’s a good start. Thank you. What are the next moves?
-
What would make me puke is if there is a side deal with TB to send Larsson there, along with Gourde whom SEA selects in ED, in return for players and cap relief (Johnson, Cirelli, Palat, etc) and picks. I doubt it, but am preparing a barf bag just in case.
-
Please put together how and what you’d propose should have happened, and try to do so sequentially. Please address all info including cap, buyout penalties if any, salary structure, list of who you would have made eligible for the ED, and if necessary who you would have to trade out and to whom and for what. Because truthfully, there are posters here who are doing just that and making valid points both for and against Benning’s moves. You are rambling on without inclusion of any specific detail that would go into and be involved in adjusting this roster in a real-time, real world aspect. Please indulge us and quote facts. It would be incredibly helpful as an educational tool for anyone to try and understand your rationale.

Let’s see what happens post ED tho Alf. Essentially Francis’ actions have agitated the market with some major contracts and by not (visibly yet) making side deals for the ED, he’s now effectively saturated the market with teams looking to offload cap and term. The sneakiest move of all tho is that Sea is now one of only few teams that can take on these inflated, overpriced contracts, which in turn devalues them even further. I’m so curious to see if Francis executes on this and for who and what.
