We may be drafting 11 this season, but next draft we’ll be picking at 22 or higher. Yes, in fact I have gone Kuzmental.
-
Angricot.

Really hope there is some backlash regarding this exact situation above. it truly makes no sense and is blatantly imbalanced.
-
Fair points. We definitely need a new commissioner but Bettman has made the league and owners a lot of money so I won’t hold my breath.
-
What are the odds we now trade 11th overall? Don’t you dare do it, Allvin.
-
Have you watched major league baseball lately? Umpires basically deciding games. What about all the fiascos that Goodell has been involved in in the NFL? So many examples throughout sport. it’s not just specific to the NHL

There’s corruption in every pro sports league at the very top though Heffy. it’s standard practice.

Wonder how Bedard really feels about this. That’s going to be a LOT of pressure to be the face of that pedo franchise now and into the future.

Such Bullshit.

It should be sold/relocated regardless but as it stands it’s paramount to the US network broadcast deal. Bedard would be a great asset to increase interest/revenue/reach much like Gretzky to LA. But so would a local boy top 5 NHL star in Matthews. I just never say never. ARZ baffles me as to what they are actually trying to achieve. Their philosophy makes no sense at all to me. It does not take 10-15 years to “rebuild” a franchise if you have effective management and a fanbase that gives a shit. That’s the inherent problem and why I have my doubts that if Bedard ended up there, he would be content to pursue a career with that club. The irony is if ARZ ended up with Bedard, they would still require stepping up their “rebuild” in order to satisfy an elite talent. Question is, would do they do it? If one wants to argue that acquiring Matthews or signing him as UFA signals ARZ is in win now mode, then drafting Bedard arguably puts them in the same boat quite soon. Just my opinion on it. Much like us with EP, you have to satisfy your top talent. Once Bedard enters his 3rd year of ELC, things start to get serious because you may only be able to keep him happy for the short term into RFA. Regardless i will puke in about 1.5 hours time if Bedard ends up in CHI. My bet is Anaheim will be stacked with top tier young talent and will soon become dominant in our division. scary.

All depends on what TOR puts on the table, no? if you were offered Pettersson, Hughes, Lekkerimaki (or equivalent) and a 1st round pick or two, you’re telling me you wouldn’t at least give it a thought as to what it might mean to your franchise, even the Yotes. Again, we are talking Arizona Coyotes and their unique history of trading away their top young talent on the regular. Bedard is potentially a generational NHL talent obviously, but that doesn’t render him entirely off limits. It all depends what is offered for him. If you receive an offer of 3-5 potential high quality franchise altering pieces at the cost of 1, you have to at least look at it. I wouldn’t trade for Matthews and like most would wait out the year to see if he does indeed lean towards becoming UFA. Perhaps then, ARZ gets a crack to discuss extension with him, and TOR receives some compensation before their star walks. Or better yet, ARZ simply uses the trade deadline as a means to ascertain what Matthews’ contract expectation will be and F’s over the Laffs when they sign the UFA in the following summer at no asset cost but cap/$$$. Believe me, I understand what you’re saying. My question to you is then if you are TOR’s GM and you’re golfing come Wednesday night, what do you do? What are your next and immediate moves given how top heavy and underachieving that F core is in the post.

As mentioned in most recent post, if ARZ doesn’t provide an early window for Bedard to play on a competitive team that can enhance his value, I’d expect him and his representation to be requesting a new location come his RFA deal. I’d be very concerned if I was ARZ considering the history of turning over young talent. That franchise is quicksand in every aspect for a burgeoning star. Again, all hypothetical though as the chance ARZ lands the first pick is under 10%. I’m not hung up on anything. Again, my perspective on this is based on what TOR may want to do if they fail again this postseason. They have pieces that *might* entice ARZ to come to the table. In fact, TOR arguably has the best piece (that they could obviously add to in trade) to at least try to get ARZ to talk shop.

Chychrun requested a trade a few seasons ago. Only recently did that transpire. Many players have wanted out of Arizona. If you’re thinking Bedard would be excited to play there, with limited supporting talent, on a feeder franchise, you might be wrong. My guess is he would be pressuring for a move towards the end of his ELC if the team remains hopeless. if you’re going to be a cap floor team, what better way to do it than acquire a superstar F who is a home state star you can market the crap out of and who will effectively chew up a majority of your cap space while you continue to build. Another question is what does Matthews want as his legacy. Does he choose to chase a cup with a contender team that can afford him or does he remain with TOR - which I would gamble he will. I just put the proposal together to see what others would think of TOR’s next moves should they be bounced on Wednesday.

Exactly my point and why they at least make a pitch to ARZ. If i was ARZ I wouldn't accept Matthews for Bedard either but if TOR added very significant pieces (eg. future 1sts + Knies) to a base of Matthews, l could see ARZ at least contemplating a trade scenario. Money is definitely a major pressure point when it comes to ARZ and their franchise mgmt, but of all players to trade Bedard for, Matthews fits the timeline, age demo and marketing strategy. Personally, I could see VGK being a dark horse in an attempt to land Matthews and extend him. I realize their cap condition, but if any club can manipulate money to orchestrate something massive, it's them. VGK could also benefit from being close to home for Matthews: "Auston Matthews is at his offseason base too, but his is a 7,500-square-foot home at the foot of Camelback Mountain in Arizona"

Congrats on your lack of imagination, officer Btw, they have 6th best odds. It’s within the realm of possibility.

I agree with that. I think Bedard is a better option longterm hands down any day of the week for ARZ. That said, there are internal NHL reasons why this franchise has been kept on life support and at some point, whether it be a Bedard or a so called “home-town hero” in Matthews they can market, they will need an absolute superstar to draw revenue. If I was the Laffs I’d at least try my damnedest to pry that pick away from ARZ and there is no better asset to do that than Matthews in terms of fit, imho
-
Because there will be many, many suitors for him and the NHL needs Matthews to rehabilitate that franchise and fill seats in their eventual new building. Gary condones this. Matthews has one year left, but his NMC kicks in this coming season. If the Laffs fail, now is the time. TOT will not let Matthews go the way of Johnny Gaudreau. It would be the utmost embarrassment. And if Matthews’ camp is intending to head to UFA status, who is going to trade serious value for him knowing full well he’s merely a potential rental? Any trade deal would have to be consummated whereby the receiving team knows they can extend him. ARZ has had their eyes on him for a long time. It just makes sense to me but yeah it’s also a proactive move, the kind of move that ARZ has been building towards through all the past years of futility. That said, Bedard has the potential to be more than Matthews over the course of a career. What would be a real coup would be, as you mention, to see Matthews walk and sign as UFA with ARZ who already has a Bedard (again all of this theory pending draft lottery) rostered. That would be eye opening. It would also make for a brutal next season for Laffs fans and I guess any of us hockey fans in general who have to accept a Toronto based lens as part of our sports coverage. Talk about nauseating.

Absolutely pending the outcome of todays draft lottery, as well as the eventual Leafs second round exit, I’m of the mindset that if the media and fanbase absolutely destroy the Leafs and propose major change, then: TOR trades Auston Matthews to ARZ for the #1 overall pick this year and draft Connor Bedard. Unsure if this would satisfy both teams and/or if more would be required on either side, but this is a major deal TOR could try to swing in order to usher in a new era and maintain promise with the fan base while also beginning the purge of some underachieving (playoff), high priced performers that can’t seem to elevate their game come post season. If Dubas is canned, and a new GM brought in, I would imagine this could be a profound move for a fresh start. Personally, would dread to see the Laffs with Bedard. Anyway, thoughts?
-
Not just that, it’s what he represents to the fanbase. They arguably signed the biggest UFA to be who might just be the piece that helps them into the playoffs. Of course that crowd will be in love with him. Especially right now. Let’s see what they think of him a few more years into that deal. I can imagine their message board now given how vocal they already are. I think Bo will have to become stronger on the D side of his game to earn the contract value and as he regresses into a 3rd liner. He will be surpassed on the F depth chart by more dynamic offensive players within 3 years, imho. Let’s see how he’s embraced then. Think that will mostly depends on or be defined by what the Isles achieve this and next season.
-
I think Bo was a regular CDC voyeur, and after seeing @Alflives regular commentary since the trade, it broke his heart. or maybe he was hoping the team would flounder a little bit in the wake of his loss. Sad to say this club hasn’t missed a beat since. I find his remarks pretty candid but could come across as a joking “parting shot”. But, I also hear some resentment though, as the panel indicated. He sounds a bit hurt. Especially when he backs up his statement with “I can tell you that for free”. Funny shit.
-
Tough call in his position having family back home in a country where there could be real and threatening repercussions for his decision. I haven’t lost any respect for him. In fact, I think it must suck having a political eye over your back on top of the already stressful existence of a pro athlete.

Yeah for sure. Still find it mind boggling how ppl wrote him off barely a year in to tenure.
