[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
T.Demko replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I sure hope so Alf! The next few weeks will clarify management's true direction. They were the only one with knowledge of Bo's asking price, so they may have figured Bo is going to walk in Summer so they got what the could. It also explains why they wouldn't allow other teams to talk to Bo's agent, it would have dropped the value. -

As much as I would like to see Miller moved, and strictly for the reason I don't see Miller aligning with our timeline, I don't see it happening. While we may be enjoying some glimmer of hope with the Horvat trade that management has finally activated a brain cell and decided to properly retool/rebuild, I'll need a secondary deal to confirm their true direction. They weren't willing to trade Miller last year for the sake of competing for a playoff spot. Is the Horvat trade a direction change from Management, or did Horvat camp simply make it very clear that unless Vancouver overpays, he had all the intention to test the FA market, which forced managements hands? -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
T.Demko replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Effin love Schenn, a true leader on this team. However if a team is offering a late first, you take it and run... but before you run, just mention to Schenn not to sell his house and double wink at him. -
Respect your opinion, and Bedard is special, no question about it, but both are still unproven in the league and Fantilli has the size and strength going for him, although Bedard's skill level is unquestionable. That being said, my question was more on, and it was a legitimately curious one, if teams seriously wouldn't consider trading a smaller McDavid for lets say, an Eichel and Kyle Connor, or an Eichel and Noah Dobson.

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Thatcher Demko
T.Demko replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Not against trading Demko, just not a fan of selling low on a proven commodity. We have seen enough of Demko to know what he is capable of, he can definitely boost his value by next year then we can get a better return. -

Makes little sense to trade Demko now when his value is at an all time low. Teams are probably offering a 2nd and a b tier prospect at best. We should give Demko a chance to regain form next year and re-evaluate. -

You know I was on the Miller trade wagon all last summer. I just find it humorous that the most went crazy with the thought of getting Chytil, Lundqvist and a 1st for Miller... yet fast forward half a year, and here we are wishing we could get Chytil and a 3rd. -

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Sorry JM, this may look a little broken as I'm only quoting questions / comments you put under my quote, but without my original piece, so hopefully it isn't too distorted or confusing. 1. Rumors is exactly what it is. We truly don't know what has been offered, whether that is Dobson or whether that is Lundqvist, Chytil and a 1st. That is outside of my interest at this point because we can't really be debating something no one can confirm. What I am saying is, although we would prefer to have a home-run return for Miller, even if such is not presented to the Canucks, we can assume at least some decent value is offered for a player of JT's caliber. I understand fair value could be subjective on which end of the Miller spectrum one's sitting at (and that is to each opinion), but still something is better than nothing is it not? If JT is being risked to just walk out on us, I don't believe the Canucks are in a position to lose him for few measly playoff games. 2. We, in this exact specific context, referred to the very recent posters who have been actively debating with RWJC or grandmaster and shared a common thought as I. It also included RWJC as RWJC also pointed out he/she/they did not believe our team was constructed as a Contender yet. 3. I don't ever recall stating we were not a team that could make the playoffs. As I have stated multiple times, especially with JT and BB, we are a team that can surely make the playoffs. However, there is a big difference between a team that can make the playoffs and a Cup Contender. We are definitely not the latter, and nowhere close to competing against the real big boys. I'm also excited as well for the new additions we have made, but I'm not sure if I would call that "significant" upgrades. Regardless, that is a surprise for us to witness as the season unfolds. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Your point was that, and is, as per the above post, it is important for us to make the playoffs to assess what we're missing, whether because we need to find a post-season leader a-la-Bergeron as you aren't confident in Hughes or EP's leadership, or other reasons... I just stated it wouldn't be very productive to do so at the cost of having JT walk in the summer if we already agree our team isn't built for the playoffs even with JT in it. I don't think I missed your point on the importance of playoff experience and value, as I have quite clearly indicated in my last paragraph that I am with you on that point. I have also never indicated QH or EP as our playoff leaders (nor am I objecting), as leadership never was part of any point made previously... nor do I have any intention on entering that debate. However, we clearly agree playoff experience is valuable not only to provide the experience to our team, but to fine-tune our team of the missing component. We also agree JT's timing is off and we need to maximize on the return. Therefore, in conclusion, why are we even debating? lol. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That is exactly what I'm saying grandmaster. There is nothing wrong in saying you want Miller to stay because he is your favorite player. As a fan, you are entitled to that, and it is something no one can refute because it is your preference, your opinion. No one is going to argue stating he isn't your favorite player. However, stating things like you can have Hedman on your team but it's meaningless without a proper coaching / system is plain silly. Not because your bit about having forwards not coming back to help isn't true, but because the exact logic can be applied about JT Miller, or for any forward in general. Just as you have stated many times, hockey is a team sport, where team defense exists, team offense exists just the same. I'm stating you can't be putting out things like that to justify your narrative while completely ignoring that there is just an equal end of the opposite spectrum. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
We can do that without having to sacrifice our future by letting a blue chip trade asset walk, just so we can test the playoff water to determine what we need to push ourselves to the next level. That is really counter productive. The bolded is exactly what some of us have been stating. We are not constructed as a post season team with Miller in the roster, so if we have already determined that, why are we risking our blue chip trade asset to confirm what we already know? Playoff experience is very important, but it will naturally come once we have, as you mentioned, constructed a post-season team. We don't expect the Canucks to win the very year we finally build out a true playoff team, but we do expect the team to regularly make the playoffs and earn the much needed playoff experience so we can then tweak and add to get us to the promise land. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
MTL yes, but they didn't win to defy the odds, however I don't think STL was a Cinderella run. They may not have been the cup favorite to start the season, or an exciting offensive team, but they were built on defense and absolutely capitalized on that structure with a hot goaltender. I mean they did have very good forwards like O'Reilley, Schwartz, Tarasenko, Perron, Schenn but they had a very stellar defensive unit with Pietrangelo, Parayko, Bouwmeester, Edmundson, and Dunn. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Why do you guys keep throwing this like the importance of an overall cohesive offensive unit isn't just as important, or that a good defense leads to an offensive opportunity. Ever heard of the saying "defense wins championships"? I'm not discrediting overall team defense isn't important, don't strawman your way out. I'm saying you folks like to emphasize your end of the spectrum for purely pushing your narrative and feeling right. There is nothing wrong in just coming out and saying you want Miller to stay because he is your favorite player or you want to win games now and get to the playoffs. It sure beats just throwing anything on the wall to see what sticks. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think you're ignoring a key component of my statement and focusing on a single aspect to push your narrative. You're saying you'd rather get absolutely nothing than get Lundqvist, Chytil and a 1st round back? As I have stated, this has nothing to do with quality or quantity, and whether the trade value is fair in present term, since we cannot foresee Lundqvist and the 1st rounds full potential. It is a hypothetical question asking if you'd rather put your pride on the line than the well-being of the team, IF the aforementioned trade is indeed the best offer we receive for Miller. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It is your personal opinion, as you've stated, so it is your entitlement. However, that is definitely not the pride and emotional thinking the management should approach this situation with. I'm assuming what you've stated in terms of trade value to be the equivalent rumor of Lundqvist, Chytil, and 1st. If that is the best offer on the table and we risk Miller to walk for nothing, I sure hope the management pounces on that. If by fleecing, you're stating something like a 3rd for Miller, that won't happen so we really don't have to worry about that. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
No, I think it would be an absolute LOSE if an asset like Miller just walked into FA without us getting anything back for him, especially with how fragile our future cupboard is. I don't think anyone in Calgary is saying, hey, we just lost Johnny Hockey but guess what, it is a win because we got cap space! I'm sorry, but we're just not in a position for possibly one of our best trade asset in the past decade to just walk out on us. That is terrible asset management, and would put JR and Alvin below Benning instantly. I don't believe in if the offer isn't exactly what we want, just stay pat and show the league we will not be pushed around! Yeah, it'll definitely show the league how incompetent we are. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
T.Demko replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It is definitely becoming more transparent with the must-re-sign-Miller crew. At first, they were all about how J.T. Miller will take a team-friendly contract as he loves Vancouver and wants to remain here; hence, trading Miller made no sense at all. Then it was about the type of return for Miller not being adequate and how Miller would still sign for a 7 mill AAV contract. Now, with the recent turn of events foreshadowing what Miller's next contract may actually look like, it is all about retaining him by paying fair market cost because well, in the famous words of Big Bert, it is what it is. I get it, you guys want to win now and can't stand the Canucks not making the playoffs, whatever the reason may be: you miss the playoff hockey excitement, J.T. Miller is your favorite player, you can't stand your other hockey fan base making fun of our team, you just want to see your team win, etc... I get that, and it isn't a bad thing to be emotionally attached to a player and/or wanting to win now. You believe J.T. Miller gives you the best chance at that (although some of us will make a case that Demko, Hughes, and EP are the drivers, and especially more-so moving forward). Regardless, that is beside the point. Miller definitely carried a large weight on his shoulder last season, and he is a very good hockey player. That being said, going "all-in" for Miller and shifting our window to purely justify keeping Miller in Vancouver, especially at what looks to be his demand, is a very emotional-based decision than a logical one. You don't gamble your future away for the sake of attempting to make a dream materialize when you aren't ready. People believe "anything can happen", and "dreams happen", and that is true to only some extent. In order for your dreams, or "anything to happen", you have to be structurally ready to make it happen when the opportunity strikes. With Miller, yes, we can be a playoff team, but we certainly aren't a Cup Contender like the big boys. Yes, it sucks we need to wait few more years for us to get there (yes, you guys keep forgetting pro-Miller traders are also true Canucks fans), but getting the right assets back for Miller now can provide us a much better chance at becoming Cup Contender at our opportune window. Not only by the assets we will be getting back in a trade, but by patiently waiting out the bad contracts, not anchoring ourselves again with another albatross contract, and by simply having cap space to weaponize and utilize at our disposal.
