  1. Proposal To Pittsburgh Garland Poolman (or Dermott) 2023 Van 3rd To Van Marino Kapanen Why for Pittsburgh? Marino is apparently not viewed as highly by current Pitts Mgmt as he was by Rutherford and is paid 4.4 Poolman is cheaper, RD, as is Dermott who can play both sides Garland is self explanatory. Brings some added punch to that team and his style is a good fit Why for Us? RD, cost controlled, clearly liked by Rutherford, and would be a good piece to fit in to our group age wise. Should allow us to move Myers Kappanen brings us the speed we lose from Garland, bigger, some offensive upside (albeit inconsistent) but an excellent PK'er and can play a second PP. He is also not seen as a core piece in pittsburgh and has been rumoured for a while to be on the trading block. I see this as a not a blockbuster deal, but a hockey trade that can improve both team's deficiencies and position us for other moves.
  2. fair point but it sounds legitimate if you think about it from a return perspective. Also, I believe it came from Sat Shah, and if so, he's certainly not known as a type in the media to make up rumours, he's pretty legit in terms of checking his sources. Agents talk to media all the time...that's typically where leaks come from, not GM's But your point is taken, the media is not a very reliable source generally. Particularly in Vancouver
  3. Gino is right....Ferland seems to have that not give up gene in him, which is very admirable and is why he was a terrific player. But how easily he was concussed that last come back should be the warning, its time to worry about your life after the game and ability to function. Be happy you're a multi millionaire, had the oppty to play a game for a living, and still can function normally....He comes back and it happens again, who knows what happens to his brain and health.... This is one time I think pulling a Gillis (ie as he did on Manny) could be required if Ferland keeps pushing.
  4. Well we do "know" NYR offered Chytl, Lundqvuist, and a first...but we turned it down....so that was the first 'offer' out there that we know of.
  5. Sure but he's giving 2 firsts back...NJ already has an immense stable of young talent. TBH adding another young player who's going to take 2-3 years to get into the lineup isn't really what they need. They need to start winning now.
  6. I think the NJ deal is a "maybe". Not sure if Garland is enough to pull that 2nd, but given you're offering up our 15th and another first, arguably value wise is "should" be. If I am NJ I am willing to make that deal since I'm really not losing out on futures (actually gaining) while also getting a skilled, cost controlled winger who would fit nicely into their lineup. The one I am not sold on is the return for Miller. That is ALOT. Its fair value for us, I am just not sure if Boston would be willing to give that much up. If Bergeron retires, yes as they will be desperate. But if not, there are some UFA's that will allow them to pay the same $ wise and not have to give up assets. Kadri, potentially Malkin, Trocheck, Giroux, etc..
  7. Exactly right. People look at OEL's points and say he should have had 50! He's a waste! But the Issue is, Hughes was playing 1:30 of the 2 mins on the PP...OEL had very little PP time and was in shut down role. I also think he subtly made Myers look better (cleaning up for him), which also lessens his offensive output. He is a younger version of Edler with more skill (and some sandpaper) and an important piece. We just need a cheaper big RD on his line to stay at home and allow him to be a bit more aggressive offensively. I'd also like to see him get more PP time. Leave QH out for 2 mins and place him on the 1/2 wall on the 2nd PP....
  8. I wish others understood what BPA means as you do!
  9. I agree...And if NJ is open to moving the pick, what use do they have for another young player? As you said, they've got a stable full. At some point, teams need to start winning too. NHL teams make money in the playoffs, NJ needs to start making the playoffs to start making money and keep fans coming. American teams have more pressure than Canadian teams too, fans don't just show up to hockey if they keep losing like they do in Canada...hockey is not a primary sport down there, so the pressure to start winning is immense at a corporate level. NHL teams that make the playoffs tend to be a good mix of young, mid, and veteran players, that has been the recipe since I've been alive and watching the game. NJ needs leadership, they need skilled veterans, who are not 36 but can still play and contribute (ie Miller). They aren't trading a 2nd overall for Matt Barzal (young skilled), and Matt Barzal is probably not available for 2nd overall. The reality is Miller is exactly the type of piece they need and would be looking for. A guy who can help mentor their young guys into the playoffs and as he ages out they are able to lead the way / take the reigns and have had playoff experience through his help. Winning a cup is a process, you have to make the playoffs first, you then have to learn how to win (ie look at Toronto), you have to go through learning pains (and often years of losing early/mid rounds, see the Caps), to then only finally win. You need veterans who've been through those emotional moments to steady the team, you need skilled veterans to have the respect of the young guns (not just the Roussell types)... I would not be shocked to see Miller end up in NJ and the 2nd coming back. I also think the trade could be larger than just Miller.
  10. I was just browsing back as someone had posted in that thread, quite funny to he how right or wrong people were. Not in an insulting way, simply that we as fans really know very little other than what we read about most of these draft eligible players. So our takes (including mine) are often waaaay off..... I can take pride in knowing I wanted Sergachev and / or Chychrun over Juolevi because I had seen alot of OHL games for the 2 years prior. And I did want Ehlers with our Jake pick badly but only so far as I had read alot...so maybe / maybe not I can take credit haha! This year, my only call is Noah Collins - whomever takes him in the 3rd/4th rounds will find a steal. I hope this ages well haha!
  11. How does Turcotte look like he'll be a bust? 21 pts in 32 games in his first year of the AHL 18 pts in 27 games in his second year of the AHL (marginally better ppg average) seen 8 games in the NHL, yet to get points but its only 8 games only 21... A bit weird to say a 21 year old kid who's almost a ppg in the AHL is a bust I would posit.
  12. fair enough but does it make you feel better calling people simpletons? Perhaps you need to do some work on yourself and think about why calling other people names, because of their opinions on a GAME, makes you feel better about yourself. Try being civil and respectful of others.
  13. Fully on the Noah Collins train with our 3rd
  14. what about his point is wrong? Jones when traded was 26, had 2 years left at 5.4 mil and is a right shot D, heavily in demand. the age difference is material, and ok you can say a Center vs a RD are a wash.... rather than insult, perhaps explain your view
  15. Someone posted that Benning made the pick on his WJC performance yes. I'm not sure, as I haven't seen that anywhere else but could be correct. Anyways not sure how we got onto OJ in this thread! Should be back to Miller time!
  16. I spent 2 years in London Ontario doing my masters and saw about 45 London games over that period (including games against Sergachev and Chychrun).... OJ was a solid junior player no one said otherwise....however, he was not exceptional, and certainly not worthy of 5th overall at that time. Again, I was angry when they picked him, not apathetic, angry because I knew he was not better than those 2. He was playing on a typical powerhouse London Knights team that included Marner, Tkachuk, and Dvorak who had over 100 pts each in their draft years. The team went 50 and 15 or something like that...they were stacked, it masked his errors, but they were evident. His issue of getting beat outside was there in junior and his lack of mobility and footspeed. I am sure his injuries exacerbated his deficiencies, which makes things worse since you're playing at a higher level where players are even faster, but to be clear, his issues where there in junior. He was a fluid but average speed in terms of skating, and excellent at making a first pass. When you're on a team like that you're not defending much, you're usually on offense.... What he did in his D+1 year has no bearing, most players have solid D+1 years, particularly if they are WJC caliber. What matters is, what were his flaws and why did we draft him over players without those flaws, and who played much more physical games and were bigger. It made no sense. That was a big miss. And a bad one. As I said
  17. Hindsight, yes is easy. But as someone who watched alot of OHL games that year, OJ was not a 'sure thing" top 10 pick. None of the D were but as I said in another post, both Sergachev and Chychrun screamed NHL calibre defenseman. What is clear is JB put way too much emphasis on Juoelvi's WJC where he dominated with the big 2 on Finland. Pulijarvi and Laine. He looked magical....but that's a short tournament, they caught lightening in a bottle and JB clearly did not assess the others in the OHL well enough. As I said above Both Sergachev and Chychrun (in Junior): Better skaters Better mobility Man frames and size Aggressive and physical pretty much the same point totals as OJ on weaker teams...pretty close in terms of numbers. All of that should have screamed to the Canucks one of these two (particularly the size, aggression physicality, given we lacked it and still do). They were common sense better selections for our team. JB even said at the draft that OJ needed to gain strength...so he was not ready. And that shouldn't have been the priority but we also now have seen OJ is not very mobile, he doesn't pivot well and gets beat to the outside alot...that issue ALONE should have been a concern to the scouts. This was not something new, it happened alot in junior, it's why I was angry when we selected him over the other 2. It was an awful pick, not because of Tkachuk, because there were 2 MUCH better dmen in the same league that were available. It's not hindsight, anyone who watched them as a casual fan (in junior as I did) would have seen it. Many, including the media got wowed by OJ's WJC performance, and saw that as him being able to dominate best on best, which to them separated him. And it was wrong.
  18. Sure but rolling dice hoping to create another trade is not a good strategy. You want certainty back when you are trading massive value not maybes. Miller is arguably the top power forward in the game, a center, great in the circle and a great leader, certainty back matters.
  19. Don't think much could have been done for Jake, it is a personality issue with him. It came easy, he didn't know how to work hard, and clearly has entitlement issues. Perhaps Juolevi had similar issues but to a lesser extent and we know injuries hurt his development. Gadj and MacEwen have developed fairly well but it seems from their own drive and committment Without the drive to be their best/committment, its hard to get a player to develop. You see so many with so much skill but who lack the drive. That's the difference at that level.
  20. Personally, I think its less about the money and more about the combination of money and where we are on the "team development curve". Miller is a guy you sign for that term when your team is ready to start competing for cups and your team is built but needs over the hump. We are still building the team to get to the hump (sadly). We all love Miller, we all wish we were further ahead of the development curve but we are not. I don't think there is one fan in Vancouver who doesn't respect and appreciate and truly love what Millsy brings. That's why its hard.... The upside is, as much as JB failed repeatedly, he has left Alvin and JR a jewel. We took at 50 pt center and turned him into a 99 pt star that most teams will covet. We will get back more than we invested (if they manage the trade well), but it should and has to position us to eventually win a cup. People lamented the trading of Linden at the same age. Boy that hurt us all, and definitely hurt more than Miller will. You want to talk about ripping the heart out of a franchise, out of the fan base? We were gutted. Linden was stan smyl with size, he was the heart of what it meant to be a Canuck. BUT that Linden trade turned into Bertuzzi, McCabe and Routu. McCabe and our next first turned into one of the twins. When you look at what that Linden trade did for the franchise, seeing the west coast express, then the Sedins, it really shows that the right trade can lead to many great things for us fans. We just have to hope our management can make a good deal to set us up....if they do, maybe we see a decade of winning again.
