  1. It seems the draft team got overly excited by Juolevi's performance in the short WJC. An error many have made. Short tournaments mean nothing. What I was surprised about, as I watched the OHL alot at that time, was not McAvoy as I had not seen him play, but rather Sergachev AND Chychrun OJ, Sergachev and Chychrun are LD Sergachev - bigger, stronger, more mobile, better skater, played more aggressively, and put up equivalent points on a weaker team than OJ Chychrun - bigger, stronger, more mobile, better skater, played more aggressively, and put up equivalent points on a weaker team than OJ Even if you discount McAvoy, those next two were both in the OHL, both brought MORE to the table than OJ, were better skaters, more physical, and simply already had frames that showed they could play in the NHL (whereas even Benning said at the draft OJ needed to gain strength). So I just will never get how a non professional scout such as myself, could see that both Sergachev and Chychrun had better odds of being successful in the NHL, it was just common sense. OJ was a reach and a project at #5 as he wasn't a clear NHL player. Sergachev may not have developed the same here (or in MtL) but regardless, both were common sense better picks. JB was a mess.
  2. Their path was not easy either. They did not come in like Crosby and hit 100 pts (not that it was easy for him but point is he had immediate success). For 2nd/3rd overall picks, their development was a-typical. Very slow, hard work, to turn into Hall of Famers. That process, that effort, that drive, that commitment to improvement every year, and the abuse they took along the way from fans, media etc, made them some of the mentally toughest (and physically toughest for all the abuse they took on the ice), players to play the game. I can't think of better role models for our prospects than them. They send a message to our prospects that its earned through commitment and effort not raw talent, and their path shows it was earned, and their success shows you need to stay committed to be the best. Brilliant move.
  3. Ah didn't realize they had a captain named already....still Miller's leadership is needed.
  4. They are also very young and need a leader. Miller is their captain instantly
  5. Yes well said. The idea of trading Miller for prospects and picks is absurd. Too many people place too much value on that (futures) More players don't live up to their draft projections than those who do, and trading your best player seldom brings back equivalent value. If we look through history, the team getting the better player at the time, has tended to win the trade - its very hard to trade a great player and get his value back. The ONLY way to try to recoup that value is with players who have at least proven they are already NHL players. The rangers ship has likely sailed but I can see Boston being very desperate as they are in a spot where they can't tear it down and desperately need center depth even if Bergeron comes back...I think there could be a trade there for Miller and Meyers that helps both teams. Boston for the now, us for the future. To Boston Miller (retain 30%) Myers To Van: Carlo Lysell Debrusk Conditional First (re-sign miller) else 2023 second.
  6. We are not in the same position as the Rangers. The rangers did a fine job of stockpiling picks, and drafting well so they could afford to sign a player like that and clearly they are alot close to a cup than we are. So its not an apples to apples comparison. On your latter point I agree, we cannot be trading a top 10 player, great center ice man, our best player, 99 pts for only futures. Alvin and JR passed on Chytl, Lundqvuist and a first. Looking at the playoffs it seems it was a better deal than envisioned but they are showing they comprehend his value to us and another franchise. We do need a young player back who's proven he can play in the NHL and has high upside We do need a solid RD back And the first is a must.
  7. I'm sure those same fans were screaming about "asset management" in the past lol
  8. these are fair points BUT, it sounds like JR is like Lou Lamorello, in that they believe to be competitive you need to have an "internal cap", because if you start paying players their max ufa value, you will never ice a team that can contend. Basically, players need to be take "somewhat team friendly contracts" to enable the team to pay for the depth you need to win. The idea being, everybody takes a bit less, so everyone can win. It appears that Miller is not willing to take a discount, his agent said that already. Whereas the language around Bo seems to be that Bo is willing to play within that internal cap to stay. I think the reality is we cannot really afford Miller - not from a cap perspective, but what the trickle down effects are for Alvin and JR to bring in the rest of the players required. We need more than Manson and Paul, and you also need to think forward for when players like Petey, Podz, Demko, re-up. Just like Kesler, Burrows, even the twins took less, we need the same from our players to be as good or better. Else you end up like Toronto. Top heavy without the ability to fill out the team.
  9. Most hockey experts? Who - media? Have you seen the 32 team draft lists? Tkatchuk has nothing to do with the RD in this draft - this is a red herring argument
  10. Sure, in a perfect world. But tell me then what do you envision us getting, and what cap room do we have if we sign miller to the $9 he deserves? What happens when Petey improves and in 2 years wants $11 mil, and Demko wants $8 mil? Do you think someone is going to give us value for Meyers that materially improves the team? We would be lucky to get a 2nd rounder for him Pearson? 3rd rounder? Dickenson? we'd be lucky for someone to take him for a bag of pucks The issue you're missing (I think) is we can't just get rid of junk and expect to be able to get talent back. You have to give up something of value to get something of value. I get it, you love Miller, so do I, to me its like ripping the heart of Kesler out, or Linden, Smyl, etc...these are guys you def win with, and personally I would prefer to move Bo, but I don't see that happening given JR's comments. Again, you're saying just 'we need to add to it'...how? Sell off what assets? What assets do we have that people want that will bring value? How do you solve our RD problem? our depth problem, our 3c problem? without cap room, without players in our system?
  11. I love Necas. Lots of speed and skill. It would give us immense strength down the middle where you literally have 3 scoring lines.
  12. I don't think most fans are groupwishing Miller away. Most fans love Miller and what he brings, and see his immense value to the franchise, and even entertainment value. The problem is, the canucks are at a cross roads, we all know it. We have some key young pieces, but not enough to contend, and we need to improve in a number of areas. The result of that is, in order to improve other areas and to become positioned to contend with our key young guys (before we make them go through what Bo has) that we will need to move some valuable assets to get valuable assets back. This is the cost of Benning we need to pay. The reality is, if we look at our window, Miller is the type (and age) of player that you need when you're 'going for it', either you're a consistent playoff team that wants to get over the hump or you are already a contender who wants that last bit to win. Sadly, right now, we are neither of those things. Could he play well into his mid 30's like Bergeron, Pavelski, perhaps, but those guys are a-typical. When you look at risk, salary cap implications, our window, and overall team improvement opportunities, the reality is we actually don't have much of a choice. We need to give to get.... That being said, Alvin and JR are going to be judged heavily on this move. It's either going to set us up to contend, or we are going to lose a bunch of players to UFA in a few years and will end up in a forced rebuild.
  13. I agree in general but people often use this as an argument... ie look at some other draft pick.... Drafts and players are unique / independent of one another. Choosing Juolevi in the past or Jake, doesn't mean another pick would end up the same. That fear mongering, not actuality. Moreover, who's to say the Canucks don't see Nemec for instance, as the BPA in the entire draft? People are saying Montreal isn't sold on Wright, clearly BPA could be a host of players based on a team's scouting. People look at rankings and say "that's the BPA". If it were that easy, drafts could be done with a computer and no need to show up, as everyone would have the same "list"....they don't and we can even see that in mock drafts amongst media (who by the way are not scouts). As often as teams have chosen for position and missed, there are as many times they've taken what they thought was the BPA and missed too....we need to take the BPA for our franchise. I can appreciate if the pick is a "reach" ie Barrett Haydon, but if the player you are selecting is considered the best at his position in the draft, also considered to be a top player at his position in the NHL, its not a reach. Personally, given how clear it is Jiricek and Nemec will be top 4 RD in the NHL and our need at that position, I think you have to do it. RD are probably at a higher premium than Centers now, its very hard to trade for them, so you have to draft and develop. If people are concerned we're taking them a pick or 2, too high, trade down and get some additional assets, maybe a second. Ie maybe AZ would do that, and we get a 3rd overall plus 36th.
  14. Plain and simple the Canucks got hosed. If a contract is signed under an existing legal framework, and is within the rules of such framework, irrespective of whether the league realizes there's a loophole, they cannot legally do what they did to the Canucks. Acquilini could have fought it in court but it would have created more bad blood with the league so they just accepted it....but legally the NHL would have lost in court. Just another example of the canucks getting hosed.
  15. He grew up very close to there as well. He was in Ohio but where he was born/grew up is more of a suburb of Pittsburgh actually. Chance to play with Sid, likely Letang and 'maybe" Gino, and a chance at a few more cups, can't see why he wouldn't want to re-sign with them (which would bring us more value in the trade). Plus you have Burke there too, who we know would LOVE the way Miller plays. If the Pens want to make a few last runs with the old band, Miller will certainly help them become contenders again. My bet is Pittsburgh is where he ends up as well. Boston will want him but I think Pittsburgh will end up giving us more.
  16. yes, I'm just saying its no big loss if he gets bribed by the Oilers and promised first line time with McDavid. He's a free, cheap asset, who clearly has some skill and also has played on a line with Podz and had chemistry so for sure worth a flyer. If we don't sign him, its not a big deal though in my view. He's not Panarin is my point, is probably the best way to say it.
  17. The risk for him is they will "promise" time with Mcdavid. But we all know when the going gets tough it will be Kane (who they will re-sign) and Draisatl. The McDavid promise will put $$ in his eyes as he will feel he can maximize his next, real contract, the following year....but if he gets stuck on the 2nd or 3rd line, ooops. It will be interesting to see who he chooses. End of the day, until he shows what he can do in the NHL he's another over hyped Euro in my view. He hasn't put up 'startling' numbers in the KHL to be a major difference maker in my view...
  18. Shut down BC and Toronto Keep: Edmonton Calgary Saskatchewan Montreal Hamilton Ottawa CFL is a smaller town sport Put a Team in Kitchener / Waterloo or London - all growing really fast population wise and supportive of smaller sports, and lack entertainment alternatives. Put another team in the Maritimes (Halifax) Bring the NFL to Vancouver and Toronto
  19. fair enough, and thanks for the explanation. if the step back still moves us forward in the end I'm all for it. Personally, I don't care if they make the playoffs next year, I want them to add talent so that I see a cup in my lifetime. Been a fan since the 70's...tick tock
  20. What worries me is they have talked a big game, and I feel like they will use JB's failings and the mess he created as their excuse if they can't improve things. Use it as their free pass so to speak.
  21. depends who's there at 7. If Nemec or Jircek are there you have to do it. That type of trade would be discussed in advance and if a player the Canucks want is there, they pull the trigger at the draft. If not, they pass.
  22. Well I hope they realize this isn't Pittsburgh. You've made alot of claims of what you can do (JR and Alvin), you've got an angry fan base, and impatient for more middling, and you don't have a core of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang. What worries me is they seem to have some arrogance, as though they built that cup winning team. Sidney Crosby, Malkin and Letang won those cups, not them.
