[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
NucknAsia replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
You hit on an interesting idea. Garland for Zacha but I also see NJ as a perfect match for Miller. Perhaps its a bigger deal? They have alot of young talent, they need vets, they want to start making the playoffs with their young group and Miller would be a great leader for them. Miller Garland Vancouver 15th overall Myers Rathbone (that would hurt from an competitiveness perspective for us...lose alot of intensity so I'm not sure I like as I write it down haha) For NJ 2nd overall (Which they said they are open to moving) (Draft a top RD) NJ 1st round 2023 Zacha - Solves 3c issues Shakir Mukamadullin - Brings us size for the bottom LD pairing over Rathbone Severson - Have to give to get vs just prospects So really its: Severson, Sahkir, and 2nd overall - for Miller and our 15th overall Garland, Myers and Rathbone for Zacha and next years first rounder Not sure of the cap issues but that brings a heck of alot of punch to NJ to make the playoffs. For us, it solves our 3c Issue - Zacha Brings in a future top RD in our second overall pick Severson vs Myers, upgrade Rathbone vs Shakir - Love rathbone - rather have Shakir's size on our bottom or 2nd LD when its time plus futures (another first rounder in a deep draft 2023 Losing Garland hurts but assuming Brock can find his game again, and Podz can take the next step he won't be overly missed. Younger, bigger, faster -
Exactly right. The goal of a GM is to build a long term contender. That requires skill. Mortgaging the future completely, without a view into the mid and long term consequences of ANY business is idiocy and clearly self serving. Anyone who's run a business knows the short, mid and long term all matter. But you must not "kill your business" in the long run for a short term gain. We've seen Gillis and JB show zero comprehension of this. Perhaps its because we have too many agents and "hockey guys" at the top and not business people. A basic course is business strategy and they'd know this.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
NucknAsia replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
The players who signed their second contracts were much higher point producers even at that time I'm not sure if you've noticed but it seems the league has moved to 2nd contracts effectively being the same as old UFA deals as players are getting PAID earlier, during their primes, vs later when teams don't want to commit alot of money to an older player. Add in the fact we've had a flat cap for 2 years and it will continue for a couple more at least, and teams have lost alot of money bec of covid, the idea that teams will over pay in the next 2-3 years is looking at the economic issues of teams/league with a very shallow lens Its easy to make simple arguments, its alot harder to assess ALL the factors/issues and think big picture. Horvat is not worth 7 mil. sorry -

Its odd You seem to be putting words into my mouth. Alot of what you have said here is projecting assumptions on my post, none of which I said. We clearly cannot trade both Bo and Miller, that makes no sense - its one or the other. In my view Miller is more valuable despite his 1.5 year age gap. Where did I say he's a 3c? I did not, in fact in other posts I called him a 2c as that's what he is. But we don't need 2- 2c's is the point You don't need to replace Horvat if you're keeping Miller. Regards, A -
Torterella interviews for Flyers Head coaching job

torts! -
Yes but I was responding to 'what management thinks about him"....so the point was, if the contract was lower they would have a different opinion and he would be good value. He's not good value currently, so therefore IF they could move him, they likely would. I wasn't commenting on the ability to move said contract, which is why he is stuck here.

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
NucknAsia replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Cool you found 2 overpaid players as your argument? How about Barzal Pastrnak Kyle Connor Hischier Nylander Coutourier Bo does not belong in that group sorry -
I think OEL would be part of the team going forward if he was making 6.5 mil but the issue is the contract. On Garland, and probably most players other than QH,EP,VP,TD, it likely comes down to what comes back.
-
I agree with all of that but the one issue you're missing is the team with the twins was in a tough position to ask them to accept a rebuild with 5 good years left in them. Outside of that, i agree 1000% with what you've said. I love Miller but it makes the most sense to move him. and even potentially Bo.

fair point I didn't look at gp...even then. it doesn't change the cohort I mentioned. Go look at the list of players in the 7 mil range I provided Bo is not better than any of them, and a number are below 7 -

Sure, but that's the reality, and how the league seems to work. Whether its right or wrong isn't factor, that's just how contracts are priced. -

Boeser is overpaid. You cant pay players more because JB signed bad contracts. -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
NucknAsia replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
here's a list of players by cap hit. If you look at the names there, other than some over paid players, he doesn't belong in that group imho. No knock on Bo, he's a valuable player but he's shown he's a 50 pt 2c nothing more. Yes great in the circle but that's part of being a center, and you're paid for points in the NHL. Is he worth the same as Barzal, Landeskog? More than Pastrnak, Nylander, Debrincat, Kreider? No chance. He's a 5.75-6 mil player max in my view. We can't pay players because we like them, we pay them relative to their comps. And all those names are more impactful imho. https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/rankings/ -
thank you!

[Poll] Was it a distinct kicking motion?
NucknAsia replied to Rubik's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Joel Otto Karma's a bitch -
Rest in Peace Duke. Your love for Brock AND the Canucks was evident. Your son's character is a reflection of a great father and great man. I hope one day Brock reads this thread to know how much the fans are sending him as much love and support as we can. Duke is out of pain now, and hopefully, in time, his son, and family can start the healing process. Prayers for strength to the Boeser family.

exactly right, and I posted an article about that. And, it was because they lost some fast physical wingers and Woo was / is the only guy who could replace that against a very physical team. Basically, Cull figured, I need some toughness up front for this initial round, who is tough and can forecheck. It had nothing to do with him unable to play D. Woo was also coming back off injury and often you may not want to tamper with your D pairs going into playoffs. In fact, until his injury he has been progressing quite well. People may want to think back a bit too, a certain physical dman who turned out pretty damn amazing, played a few games on wing for the Canucks...his name was Kevin Bieksa. There were also some all stars who've done the same, Dustin Byfuglein, Brent Burns etc.

I find it interesting the same people saying get rid of a 21 year old RD who's physical and still learning, are the same people crying about Forsling. They seem to be lacking a bit of self awareness when it comes to their own arguments. Forsling has been on 3 teams he was on his last chance in Florida. Vancouver and Chicago moved him and now he is in Florida and is turning 26. He just had a decent/breakout year on a stacked team at 26 years old. He couldn't stick with 2 weaker teams in the NHL and was able to save his career with a stanley cup contender - people need to recognize that. Perhaps those arguing get rid of Woo need to consider a few things One we lack RD prospects, so getting rid of one who 21 and still can develop is not smart. We lack physical RD - as above Players take time to develop - see your own Forsling argument He has shown good strides until this last year where he was injured. Why Woo was placed on RW was due to other injuries (when he came back from his own) and the team's desperate need for physicality up front. See the article I posted Jack Rathbone is 22 and no one is complaining about him needing more time in the AHL to develop defensively...weird how Woo isn't given the same. Because he's not a point producer? Who cares. You don't "Dumperoo" physical RD who are 21, and developing when you lack RD prospects. Its interesting the same person who said the Canucks have given up on Woo on D, never responded to my post of an article showing that's not the truth.

Lawsuit Against Hockey Canada/CHL (2018 World Junior Team)
NucknAsia replied to -DLC-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Sickening, and their leadership should step down. The should have come out and stood up on behalf of the victim, said its unacceptable and Hockey Canada does not and will not allow this to ever happen again. Their 'sweeping it under the rug', simply allows this garbage to continue. Its basically saying, oh well boys will be boys, and let's just keep it quiet. Sick -

Which player did he draft? Jake? Jake wasn't accused of such behavior until well into his career. There is no way JB could have known that. Same with Reid Boucher, it came out later so I don't think you can put that on him. No doubt they need to evaluate character better though and it seems there's still a sickening bro culture in hockey. -

yes very interesting legal case here. Clearly sickening and just shows the mentality of these idiots, and why guys like JV thought its ok to do what he's alleged to have done. Its bro culture and sickening that it still happens. But legally what can be done by the NHL? If a settlement occured, and the names are shielded via the settlement they may not be able to do anything. They may not be able to find out who the players were and if they are playing in the NHL. Remember, a settlement generally involves no statement of guilt and release from such admissions. Sickening to see. Makes me lose respect for alot of these athletes now. -
He and Bo are very close, best friends so there's a chance if we re-sign Bo. He's currently signed for 5.3 AAV but other than one 72 pt season before he signed that contract he's been a career 40-50 pt guy. I like the idea as he and Bo had incredible chemistry in Junior, he's a competitor and plays alot bigger than he is. My guess is if you give him term he comes in around Garland numbers. 6 years x 4.5 AAV He could become a real bargain contract if we could get him there and he rekindles his junior numbers with Bo.

We don't have cap issues, we have cap distribution issues. We have 10 mil in cap space for next year and only really have Boeser to sign. 13 mil I believe once Ferland goes back on LTIR. Our issue is we need younger more effective players for the dollars we are paying if we want to improve. Alot of the media and fans keep saying we have cap problems, when we really don't. Of course you need to get rid of cap if you want to bring cap in. That's the reality of most teams in the NHL. Move Myers, which will not be hard and all of a sudden we have a decent amount of flexibility. Myers is a 6'7'' RD who can skate and take top 4 minutes. His position is at a premium in the NHL. Those saying he can't be moved are silly. If Myers was a free agent and said I'll sign for 2 years at 6 mil alot of teams would be lining up. He can be moved and probably for a second round pick. There's alot of maneuvering to do but all achievable, so the idea that we are in cap hell is quite hyperbolic in my view.

Cull is on record recently of saying he and the organization see him as a defenseman. They said he needs to figure out "what he will be" in terms of style, a 2 way dman, a stay at home physical player, but he has the tools and they still see him in their plans on D. Where are you getting this "they don't see him as an NHL dman" from? Bailey got hurt, the team they were playing was very physical and Cull felt they needed some size and forecheck upfront. He basically needed Woo to fill an important role because they lost Bailey and didn't have someone who plays that hard of a game to fill the role other than Woo - its not about "Not a nhl defenseman". The jury is still out on that. https://www.theprogress.com/sports/abbotsford-canucks-head-coach-trent-cull-reflects-on-inaugural-season/
