That is how badly Benning compromised this team, even McDavid and MacKinnon would have trouble pushing this mix to much higher than they are -

Who are some of the iconic teams in the league? Did you know that the 2010 Canucks were almost a record breaking NHL team? The best in every category except the PK that they lost on the last game of the season, Detroit was a pretty good team wasn't it? They trade over half their 1rst round picks off, Pittsburgh did the same, Tampa is still doing it all the powerhouse team are trading away draft picks like candy and ALL winning teams end up having little in the prospect pools. But then Gillis was 8 to 14 years ago. So where are all the latest draft picks? The last 8 years worth? Juloevi's draft year? Segachev was not a chance, he was trending up McAvoy, Chychun, Girard, Lindgren, Fox, Hronek or any of the other Demen that have played over 100 games, over ten times the number of Juloevi. The list of missed dmen for Benning is staggering because the team was picking so early in the draft. Most of those available to Gillis were already taken. If Gillis missed draft players from 8 to 14 years ago haunt this team then what about all the missed picks Benning had? Where are the 2014, 2015, 2016 draft picks? The three 1rst's? Or any of the other 50+ picks? Gillis had two top ten picks, Benning had 3 in the top 6 and missed on two of those, had three more in the top ten got one sure hit another still in the minors and one he traded away, of the four other first round picks he traded away three. All Benning first round picks were better positions than Gillis had so even bringing up Gillis is a laffer now. Better to remember that under him this team was the best in the league twice. IMO Quinn had a better team.

1. Is Elias Pettersson truly a star forward? Hard to judge because he is on such a bad team but certainly the best on this team by it's standards, on another team with good players maybe better maybe not. 2. Will Bo Horvat be resigned, is his value greater than J.T. Miller who has under-performed this year? What is the future of the franchise? All the players on this team are over paid for the results they achieve, their only claim to fame is a big tax bill. 3. Is OEL a success or failure as an Edler replacement? By the time Edler left at the end of his career OEL was a marginal improvement but he is catching up to Edler fast, declining that is 4. Myers extremely overpaid but a valuable player? Questions about the cap structure of the team remain... On this team he is hugely important, but playing above where he should be. As far a contract, looking at what was paid Sbisa, Gudbranson and other Benning deals, no he isn't. He would be easily the best Benning bucks spent, minute cruncher, PK guy and playing with multiple players of questionable talent, even Hughes lack of defensive play. 5. Success and future of Andrei Kuzmenko and lya Mikheyev The future is bleak if these guys are around in 3 years. It would mean that this management group sees a team full of 30+ year olds making the majority of the cap. Kuzmenko's agent will want a lot more than Mikheyev makes, more than Boeser, almost as much as Miller who he is ahead of in team points. So an ask of 8 million might be reasonable to them. And this management group has shown they pay by points, not character.

This kind of commentary has to be taken in the big picture. Gillis had Hamhuis and Garrison both were upper level defencemen and both were let go for nothing by Benning Gillis had Tanev and Edler, both gone for nothing by Benning Gillis's scouting department (2014) drafted Forsling and Tryamkin, both run out of town by Benning incompetence. Benning drafted Juloevi instead of any of the other 6 premier defencemen that draft class. Benning had over 50 draft picks and got ONE dman. Most picks much better than anything Gillis had because Gillis's team was a winner. Gillis was so long ago it all falls on Benning's failure to do ANYTHING with more and better picks. Hutton still plays in the league

Pettersson is playing at more than a point a game Horvat is having his best season ever Miller is still almost a point per game, his 2nd best season ever Boeser is just like last year Mikey is above most players last year Kuzmenko is almost a point per game The team is now 8 points out of a WC playoff spot, worse than last year with all those players playing outstanding by their standards The team is currently 5 million over the cap ceiling Kuzmenko is Russian and the war might affect his staying, he can't buy a house in Vancouver and players getting 30+ goals and close to 80 points are getting between 6.5 and 7.5 million per year or more than Boeser anyway with a long term contract. Signing Horvat, Miller, Kuzmenko would have the team with 5 guys over 30 making huge money in 3 years Well the game, the Avalanche played like crud. I was a win but it changed nothing they are still 8 points out of a WC spot. They just kept up with the Joneses, still 25/26th in the standings

I am not sure that 2012 roster held the team back. I think it was signing an over priced Miller that was the big mistake. IMO if they didn't have a goalie they are in the McD/Eichel draft race. Maybe even the Mathews draft too. Then they would have had 3 draft picks, 2014, 2015, 2016 not named Virtanen or Juloevi and a team of mentors with millions in cap space with Markstrom and most of the 2014 draft class coming on. Essentially the Tampa/Chicago/Pittsburgh retool models. In my fantasy world the team in 2015/16 could have looked like Larkin, Horvat, Tkachuk, Tryamkin, Tanev, Edler, Hamhuis, Garrison, Sedins, Hansen, Burroughs, Forsling, the Kesler replacements, Demko, the 2015 top 3 draft pick and 6+ million in cap space, overall a pretty good retooling and all within 3 years. Plus any returns from FAs leaving.

You count a once in a lifetime global epidemic that causes the NHL to increase the number of teams by 8 to try for playoffs? The last time they EARNED a playoff spot was 2014/15.

Linden, the ex NHLPA president. What a mistake it ended up being hiring a union player representative to run a team where trades need to happen. I am sure he brought his own feelings about being traded to the team that he was running. Burke did the work but Keenan got him the tools. Maybe Allvin just wants to be loved so no Keenan type moves. Geez, I hope not.

Ya 10 years of watching a team grow is much more interesting than watching one disintegrate with management in total denial and adding bandage on top of bandage to keep the status quo. But you see, in the States if teams aren't winning fans don't go, but in Canada just throw a distraction out there with a "hopeful" story line and reap the rewards, the golden goose. In truth I also thought is was time for Tanev to move on but I thought it would be through a trade. I wonder if any realized that any player of the Gillis's time here got nothing in return? Nothing of substance. Or longevity. Garrison gone for peanuts Hamhuis gone for ? Burroughs gone for a cast off Hansen gone for nothing Sedins held on to until nothing Bieska gone for ? Tanev walked Markstrom walked Edler walked Hutton walked Might as well add most of the 2014 draft class as well, they were Gillis's drafts except for the number one that was the new GM's. They are all gone except Demko, for nothing. Kesler might as well walked there is nothing of that trade left The list of loss is incredible and Gillis got all the blame MY great hope is that the lesson is learned in this market, you can't rely on "they know more than you" crud because obviously they didn't. They did show that the group was a pure entertainment show with story lines and show favourites. They bled the franchise dry. Treated the fanbase like country bumkins. Even in this forum there were many that aren't here anymore, ask why they were banned? I remember an avatar called Holy Badger and a few others that predicted this present day result. Actually I find a lot fewer here overall now a very reduced forum count But hey, I just get so giddy watching Hughes, our little Huggy Bear do a twirl! Getting rid of the f'n mindset of one cup and sell the farm for it has to be top of the list. X2

You do know that next year is the 2023/2024 season right? That the team doesn't have enough cap room to keep all those players. That those five have been around for 4 years already and not sniffed a playoff. In order to keep those five the team would have to trade away several 1rst round and other picks, is that okay? To sell more of the future for proven failures that is only getting older and more discouraged? Why not just say five different players? Not much of a difference no matter which five are selected. No thanks Elmer Alflives I don't think most fans here know what a playoff team looks like, but they should know what a playoff team does not look like, they have seen it built for 8 years. When did making the playoffs become everything?

Speaking of Kesler on steroids. Pure speculation but possible I think. Bruce's comment about "player just don't do that" and other things he said. Petey is sick for 6 days and comes back and runs circles around every one. Is it possible that he took an over the counter medication like Advil+? This medication contains Pseudoephedrine as do many other over the counter medications for flu or other aliments. The NHL doesn't do drug testing during the season so anything could be used, they do 60 random player tests of all the players. Just speculation but after Kesler and Lerner's statements about medication abuse in the NHL and combined with Boudreau's apparent surprise that Petey could perform like that, well it is just speculation. And it cannot be refuted because there is no testing done. I am not saying he did anything wrong but it was almost beyond amazing for an athlete coming off 6 days of illness. Superman as Boudreau put it?

Any one older around with a long term contract? Hey, what about Kevin Hayes? 31 in a couple of months getting paid less than Miller by a half mil or so. Think he could be pried out of Philly if they throw in a first? :D -

Just wait. The next scare tactic is to compare any Horvat trade to the disaster the Neely trade was. But there was a lesson there, the Canucks were trying to retool to get better so they traded for position. Boston just traded for a really good young prospect and draft pick they didn't really need at the time, they traded for the future. Now reverse that trade for Horvat. -

Getting really tired of the between period media interviews creating confusion or trying to scare folks. Once again there is another panic comment. Gee whiz listening to McIntired you would think that losing Horvat will make this team worse and drop them out of 1rst place in the league or something. He did nail it though when he stated no valuable player had been traded since Linden. I wonder that he didn't connect the dots, last time the team ended up with good players and playoffs. And all those years they didn't make those trades didn't help the team win squat. If Horvat goes there will be another player. There always is. The TEAM isn't about one player or even several of them, the team is ALL of them. The team could easily drop a few more spots they need to drop 5 to 7 points to get into a very high draft pick lottery or not. Just wait for the next two games, WOOO! Seattle will be much harder. Hey you see that Buffalo team, they are catching that NJD team and Montreal just pulled away some more. Ottawa is now ahead too and they have several serious injuries to core players Hey, it is a tank by any other name you want to use. -

Actually go back a few more years than that, 2016 at least. Hey they are tanking after all YAAAAA! Players want off the team, those that have good futures or contracts already. Bruce is saying how the team has come back from this many times before, I wonder which team, a wrestling tag team? He just told a little white lie, when he took over last year they were 7 pts out, they are 7 points out now. After he took over last year they quickly closed that gap to 6 points out so not really true. -
