  1. Pettersson is almost too old to build around from the bottom up. It has to do with the age of the up and coming players and lack of them. Building around Pettersson is a recipe for a single cup appearance and then another decade of being pretenders This could change IF the team gets a few more 18/19 year old stars soon, a Colorado type "build" where a player like Landeskog is followed with Makar, McKinnon and Ratanen. Most teams that appear in more than one cup final have star players Petey's age in two already. Elated, no but not irate at inaction or being treated like idiots like the last decade. I think management came from franchises where fans just didn't show up if the team was bad but the uprising of fans disgust caught them by surprise that and the fan's hockey savvy.
  2. 5 goals Under Boudreau and under Tocchet the number of goals needed for a chance to win. Management has finally acknowledged the need for major surgery, Benning never saw it or acted on it and it took this group over a year but they want to make changes. After watching the Rangers play against Calgary it was very obvious that the Rangers didn't put out the same effort. An unexpected lack of an icing call, usually that play is called icing but IMO they shouldn't be, and Petey's hustle got the game closer but the Rangers were not playing their A game. Tocchet has to be careful benching too many players THIS year or he could start losing them earlier next year. A gambler he should know not to play all his cards early. Oh well it is only one game.
  3. Not so much he didn't like it here, the most damning was he was never told why he would be sat after having good games. Willie was an old "Don Cherry" believer that jobs were being taken and that Willie preferred AHL players. Tryamkin was played left side, right side on the very good PK of the day. He honored the contract GIVEN him that stated he didn't have to go to Utica but then the team leaked that he refused, then Wile tried to embarrass him by over loading him with ice time playing against McDavid, but that didn't work. Essentially the coaching staff didn't explain things or talk to him. If he didn't like it here why would he come back twice and wait for a total of over 6 months waiting for Benning to talk with his agent? Why keep saying he liked Vancouver? It was a perfect example of fan manipulation leading them down the garden path. Benning was never going let him play in the NHL as long as he was around, evidence of that is easy, he could have traded his rights to Boston for a bag of pucks. Once Groot comes back into the league it will be another Benning failure exposed. Funny how fans think of him, he was a rookie that never played on small ice, didn't speak the language and the team quickly jettisoned the only player he understood. After Tanev and Edler he was easily the next best dman as a rookie. But Willie hated Ruskies. Just check any of the teams he coached. Even in the farm system in Benning time Euros asked to leave or be traded.
  4. I was referring to the "I want out of here" comment was reputed to be a fake Twitter account, but I also noted when looking that Miller's account ended or was changed right after. I don't know why if it was a fake account. I was going from memory with a post game interview in the dressing room in which Horvat made his statement. I think it was with Botchford. But evidently it also came out in the fake twitter. Funny thing about all those direct source comments, it is impossible to find what they are refuting? The magic of astro surfing.
  5. Not an unexpected effort. Still getting a coaching bump Lots of AHL guys trying out, motivated New guy trying hard New roles from some players Stillman looked pretty good A little let down from NJD, they thought they had it won and backed off, lost momentum, just a very young team still learning. I can't believe the "moral victory" stuff from most media, starting the cheer leading already, they lost they just looked better losing.
  6. No just about three things the team needs, size, PK specialist and protection for the skill guys. Oh and he can skate too. Reminds me of the joke, three guys in heaven watchin a guy skate all over the ice scoring goals by the bushel basket, one guy asks the other guy who is that, he answers "oh that's god, he thinks he is Bobby Orr"
  7. Is there a quote? A statement? From what a Russian friend told me he still likes Vancouver and they have other Russians on the team. But would YOU want him here? If not why?
  8. Rutherford could be right, they could redo this team in short order as long as they don't stop and sit on their hands after three or four trades. Just a quickie; Boeser for Mantha and a 2nd, Mantha a future trade asset after next year if he isn't what the team needs but he is big and a winger, Minny, Greenway Puljujarvi for Dries or another low salary 3rd/4th liner, they have no cap space but there is still player potential in JP Demko maybe even at the draft or summer for in a Columbus trade - Jirieck, or LA for Peterson (cap dump but maybe Ian Clarke can....), Brandt Clarke and Grans maybe need a little sweetener, Rathbone? Both teams will need a top goalie because they are well ahead of the Canucks in their windows and both have a multitude of young players already on the team so no real loss of existing team parts. They are not counting on what is in the far they already have their players and are close to being capped out with new contracts. Schenn to any team for a pick AND prospect, he is the third highest scoring RHD that might be available, the league leader in hit, two rings, great in the room, fights and doesn't take many penalties. Even as a rental he has very high value. I didn't include Garland or Miller but they could be on the move, preferably. Vegas, Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, Detroit, AND the one everyone hates again but remember this is a losing team; that without a trade like this could waste away Pettersson's prime years. QH to NJD for 2023 1rst or 2025, Siegenthaler, Bahl, the Canucks 2019 pick, Mukhamadulin, they gain the added marque value of 3 brothers all on the same team, I don't think even the Sutters accomplished that. This trade would not deplete NJD's defence prospect pool either they still have more on the farm and the team is young enough now that they could have 4 years to replace any or some of these. Resign Schenn in summer for term and a raise, say 4 years at 3 mil with a NMC Sign Tryamkin in summer or sooner. 3/4 years at similar or a bit more but without the clause The defence could certainly look different; Myers 6'8", OEL 6'2", Schenn 6'2", Sieg 6'3", Jiri 6'3" or Clarke 6'2", Bahl 6'6", Muk 6'4", Tryamkin 6'8" all over 6'1" Defense depth taken care of and still assets for trades. Not a defence that will be pushed around and that will help any goalie. IF needed Rathbone plays a little like Hughes and OEL was the prime PP Qback in Arizona he might rebound with lesser minutes. All the new guys combined cost slightly more than the same as QH so massive cap savings. Suddenly a buyout of OEL becomes affordable due to the years of these players being under cap control if needed Not all will be good enough but with sharp trading they can be moved before the prove they can't play, sooner than waiting to confirm like the team did with Juloevi And then there are the draft picks in a deep forward draft. The team would still have many trade assets and some cup winning vets on the team if Schenn comes back I would not hesitate to keep Pearson as a vet that shows how to be a defensive forward for the kids and if a need then the TDL. To achieve a turn over like this even sacrificing some 2024 draft picks, not all, and later round 2025's because most of these will be around for 5+ years if they make the muster. People always say they won't do that, but then watch a several teams make moves similar but one team at a time. Enough assets to make a good offer for Dubois. The thing is they did enough to earn a seat at the table and could be in the game. Miller and Garland with a 2024 1rst for Dubois with the pick being conditional, if he signs with the Canucks it's a first and if not then it is a 2024 2nd. Even retain a small amount, say 10% on both contracts. Winnipeg get two players with term and both can play in the right age window. Defence taken care of with depth Top six filled out 3rd line set But relying on Ian Clarke to do another miracle, but with improved defence that might not be a huge issue remember Kay Whitmore won over 30 games with a good defence in front of him
  9. Racist Schenn, yes all the way, Schenn has kind of stepped into Tanev's role, senior leader in the room, been there, done that. Oddly Tryamkin could be back and the team could use him in various ways, he is still in his prime and for large dmen that haven't had injuries he could last a long time, what a wing span. But don't insult him with an entry level contract but don't give him a long term one either unless it is fairly cheap, 3.5 for two years to see. Rathbone has been burned out here, Woo just never took that step. There are two teams I have looked at and centered on for dmen, LA and NJD they have multiple young dmen and there is Columbus that keeps my interest.
  10. It came out as a fake Miller twitter but was reputed quickly as a fake twitter account but Miller changed his own account after.
  11. Petey said he would see where the team is when asked about his newly signed 3 year contract, that he wants to play on a playoff team in the playoffs. Look it up I have the basic wording but could be out a bit. It is out there. Miller said he wanted out right after the bubble, he had to retract that quickly over the next few days. That same time Horvat stated he was tired of all the losing. Both knew that that many players on that team would be gone the next year the team was so far over the cap. Get Miller at the right time and he will just shut up, not exactly an endorsement.
  12. But then retaining 50% for the next 4 years and having another asset is better. Then it is over. And who knows OEL at 4 mil might be attractive to other GM's who know a lot of his failure here is due to the surrounding players. Even Doughty looked like crud last 4 years with the surrounding cast he had.
  13. I sometimes am amused with what fans think a player will say about the team they are contracted with. With Petey the one tell was how long he looked for the right words when trying to answer some questions and some were loaded. The "I love Vancouver" is one of the easiest questions to answer, a "canned" answer. Ever hear a player say anything different? Even do the exact words? Horvat loved Vancouver it was his home, but now he loves the Islanders. He is happy to be there. There is only one player that has said he wants out, that was Miller. Is Petey happy? Sure he is, he has millions in the bank and gets paid to do something he loves. Like most Euro's the Olympics are higher on the list of accomplishments but that could be because they only happen every other year wit a lot fewer teams in competition whereas the NHL is very (non) profit oriented. Is Petey happy, yes and he will be happy if playing for another team too.
  14. I expect that with the Devils speed there will be a lot of dump outs and less controlled escapes. Tocchet will have them circling the wagons earlier and just a quick dump out with a forward leaving a little early and then a dump and chase. I think he might do a 1 - 3 - 1 forecheck trying to clog up the neutral zone but if NJD start a dump and chase then it will become a 1 -1 - 3. This is only if they can't get in the Ozone quick enough. In the Ozone it will be a 2 - 2 - 1 with the one dman a little deeper along the boards. Back checking will be a top priority but the Canucks will take penalties. Both teams rested and mostly healthy NJD win

  16. Tocchet was part of the reason for wanting a trade out of Arizona to begin with so he might be alright with waiving his NMC. Aquilini has sat on money many times, Eriksson was basically sitting out. When a 6 million dollar player is demoted to third or fourth line duties and sat out that is sitting on a huge amount of money doing nothing. This happened with Ballard too. Retention is also in the eye of the beholder, cap space saved for other players or the retention added to the value of an under player. Weaponizing the cap is exactly what you are saying an owner will not do but it happens all the time with many teams, it is a "rich" team exercising it financial might to improve. Something that Aquilini can never be accused of not doing seeing as how this losing team has been capped out and ver the cap for years. I have always been on the retention side of this argument but I also have been a little on OEL's side too. I ask you to think about the type of game he played that earned him that huge contract? He was an offensive defenceman not a defensive dman. I think he still has game, although his broken leg last summer may be bothering him but it could just be the state of the team, loser's, affecting his effort level. I have no doubt in another market he plays more into his role as an offensive dman. Besides there isn't ANY defenceman depth to replace him, just like Myers, there are not replacements even close. Don't think Bear and Dermott will step in they were not good enough for other teams 5/6 spots. They are not bad and do have some upside but not to play against the other team's top lines and over 20 minutes a game yet. AND If the team is successful trading away more big money the team might need the cap hits for cap purposes.
  17. Can't do all of them, it would crippled the team with buried cap hits. They should try to have no more than two retentions per year. I think Myers deserves a chance to play with NHL defencemen. OEL breaking his leg may have done him in but having him sit in the press box might make more sense and who knows, Tocchet had him asking out before, maybe again then a 4 year small retention makes sense because something, anything would becoming back. Don't let his play here in Vancouver distort what the rest of the league see's, a totally poor defensive corps loaded with AHL defencemen changing partners every other game. Everyone in the league all say the defence here is a shambles but OEL and Myers are only two of 8 dmen. But if Myers still struggles too much then trade at next year's TDL.
  18. No need to retain on them, already league minimum. Retaining on say Boeser is worth improving a 4th rnd pick to a 2nd rnd pick Garland improvement to a 2nd rnd pick + AA prospect Miller a first rnd pick + AAA prospect and NHL player Those would be the value not necessarily the actual although retention could add to any trade either prospect level or pick(s) The more new players or assets for trading the better and shorter any build. Not every trade will work out so need lots, the law of averages. And apart from Miller the retention should be a marginal short term cap hit easily managed through entry level or second contracts for 3 years. The team would also show a plus in cap space immediately to be used to enhance or trade for a bad contract with a very high pick or act as a third team in a multi team trade where the Canucks get a couple of top level assets back. The cap hit would be no worse than the buried buyout cap hits the Canucks have had for years now
  19. If against all odds and Canucks history they do get Bedard, IF, then they better find another Reeves out there. No way some player does what happened to Pettersson again. Maybe even two like that and re-sign Schenn.
  20. The buyout while immediately removing a player from the team has some other negative results IMO. The buyout cap hit while smaller lasts much longer and bad example is DiPietro with the Islanders, it still exists even though it is now 0$ A buyout returns nothing but bad news as long as the cap hit remains and shows a mistake that lives on and on. A buyout instead of retention shows failed/bad management A buyout is a total loss of assets. Retention ends with the contract, cap space is still made for the team and they can get an asset back. While a four year carry over of a 25% retention on Garland is not a great thing it is just a manageable as a 7 year buyout cap hit but way more tolerable and shorter. A buyout might become necessary if the Bally Sports bankruptcy hits the cap too negatively, compliance buyouts might be allowed
  21. Bally Sports Bankruptcy Can Affect the Salary Cap. Well now the research starts to see if it does at all but there are reported 12 NHL teams that they owe money to Individually it might not amount to much but if 1/3 of the league is affected then there is even a chance if it is enough there is a small chance the cap could go down or stay the same for another year. I am sure if that happened the league would allow compliance buyouts.
  22. Pretty sure I started a similar thread a few days ago and quoted the Montreal Gazzette about how 12 NHL teams could be affected and revenues could be reduced due to money owed and not paid. Not sure what happened to that thread, I can't find it anywhere now At any rate it is worthy of taking note now that more media outlets are publishing it. This could affect trades now.
  23. He would be the 2nd highest paid forward and the 3rd oldest. I don't think they would go this route unless it was for a rental. Kotkaniemi should not be considered coming this way. Smaller cap hit but it last 14 years, too long for nothing and then goes and signs somewhere for half? Miller with Schenn or Burroughs and retention for the remainder of his current contract could be attractive at the TDL. There are a few playoff teams that could consider this and those teams will have cap space for the next contract whether Schenn is attached or not. Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Winnipeg, St Louis, . The Canucks could make a trade work with most of those teams and they all have leadership to dampen Miller's intensity. Philly and Detroit maybe.
