I enjoyed the spectacle of the tournament but I found the constant calls in Argentina's favour and non-calls against them to be suspicious at best. This WC honestly felt like fan service to me, the best team didn't win but the best story did.
I think a healthy France would wipe the floor with that Argentina side 9 times out of 10, personally
I know he's older now, but I just wasn't impressed with Messi relative to the amount of praise he was getting for doing literally anything. You'd think a number 10 has never connected a nice pass or beat a defender before. Compare his campaign with the truly transcendent WC performances of modern history and I just don't get it.
Give me Fat Ronaldo any day of the week.

Sure. Obviously stupid men.
it's obviously not a matter of being stupid. Buffet admitted he's been wrong about tech for years - he was wrong about apple, he was wrong about microsoft, google and amazon. the list goes on and on.
in 2018 he called bitcoin "rat poison." the irony was lost on him. who is the rat? the answer is obvious
from a pure investment perspective, when he called bitcoin rat poison it was valued at $7-8k USD, now it's at $16,000+ USD, despite there being a global recession, one of the biggest exchanges on the planet going belly-up and a well-respected dinosaur like Munger repeating that it's only used by criminals
bitcoin is the single most interesting, exciting and profitable speculative asset on the planet

I think Charlie Munger's take as he was interviewed by MSNBC was bang on. Not a real industry. A collection of charlatans and thieves. This was never an investment it was all about the latest gimmick for people to get rich quick.
He works at Berkshire Hathaway, a group that didn't think Microsoft or Google were worth investing in. Didn't buy Apple until 2016, a decade after the iPhone came out.
these people know nothing about technology, they simply have enough money to hoover up mass amounts of stock 20 years after the mainstream has spoken. Warren Buffet admits he doesn't understand technology, why would his 98-year-old protege be any different?

i thought the first two episodes were pretty good, the third was horrendous. turn away now if you hate negativity
but honestly, this shit is inexcusable: the godawful cgi (eg the stags, the dragon rider towards the end), the terrible dialogue, the hamfisted metaphors (stags again), the anticlimactic, stupid deus ex machina used YET AGAIN to solve a battle sequence. it felt so cheap to me.
i've been rewatching mad men recently and i can't help but think how great that show is when it comes to representing a woman's struggles in a male-dominated space. i don't know how to explain it, but it almost demands the viewer to make value judgments as the plot unravels. by contrast, HoD quite literally reads like a Disney movie -- ep 3 has scenes that seem identical to Jasmine's dialogue with the Sultan in Aladdin. there's even a fancy pants staff being used to dupe the king, lol
i'm afraid this show is mistaking references for depth but i hope episode 3 was just a misstep and things correct by next week

can't even remember the last time i saw a great new movie
dune 6/10? like whatever dude, typical blockbuster wank
spider man 5/10? yeah, i watched this. nothing special. zoomer nostalgia
west side story lmfao yeah i watched this too/10. in fact, i'm pretty sure the days-long runtime is still going somewhere in my background. spielberg has a remarkable talent for making new movies look like new movies trying to be old movies that will soon age so poorly that they'll look like old movies trying to be new movies looking like old movies
french dispatch, yeah i guess it was decent. but maybe my least fav from pastel anderson

recently watched saint maud and found it quite unsettling when it was over. not at the top of the a24 horror catalogue, but certainly still excellent

This cycle hasn't gotten nearly as much media coverage as the last one but we're definitely seeing a lot of delusion lol. (Although google trends and App Store downloads do suggest a top)
Based on previous cycles, which are also increasing in length, many have predicted this to run until fall/winter. However, with increasing fear around inflation, you might see insitutions push this bull run longer then expected.
I'm not sure I agree with this, media attention has been huge. Global News, the most basic of basic news, did about 5 stories about DOGE this week alone. like, I can't even get my head around that. The same broadcast has even done numerous stories on NFTs. This doesn't include all the mainstream news coverage of NFTs, Musk's memes, the general price uptick. I feel like the whole crypto conversation sort of went hand-in-hand with GME for a lot of broadcasts/publications too
I see so many analysts with good records predicting bitcoin's bullrun won't end until this summer, with highs being in the 70-100k USD range, but I just don't understand how -- unless Michael Saylor and some other massive institutional investor pump spend another few billion, how is that going to be achieved?
My brain is saying sell, but my heart is saying ride it out. No idea what's going on

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. And I don’t mean to be disrespectful.
I believe you meant Doge coin. In which I completely agree. Doge is pure meme and has zero value !
look into cardano, it’s an incredible project.
not only is Cardano NOT an incredible project, it actually has no WORKING product. yes, great, it finally achieved decentralization after years and years of minting from IOHK (and Hoskinson LITERALLY bought his lambos), but not until Cardano releases a working smart contract network, which it should have done years ago, will I even consider it a functional product, let alone an incredible one. and once it releases its long-overdue testnet and public network, it will have to prove to be functional for use (look at the problems eth is now having with network congestion)
if you just watch Hoskinson talk about the Cardano roadmap, you'll see he offen defers to things like academics and research regarding theoretical scaling as the reasons for these delays - paper publishing is more important than testnets, i guess? - and like clockwork these issues lead into vague tangential rants about governance and like the liberation of Africa, still without there being an actual working product. in recent years he has said use and utility will potentially work in scale in 3-5 years, with the governance spook being solved "within decades."
in the meantime will people make money? sure. but like i said regarding Bill Maher's video, there are companies out there making products that hundreds of millions of people rely on every single day and they don't even have half the ADA marketcap. in what world is Cardano an incredible project and not just, at best, an incredible idea?
i love bubbles because they're great for making money, but emotional attachment to investments is the easiest way to be left holding the bag

Never ask a c comedian for investment advice. I like Bill, but he's just another boomer hating on something he doesnt understand. Carefully cherry picked information, sheep in the crowd roaring because the the obvious notion must be "If I dont understand it, it must suck"
Best performing asset year over year over year. Best performing asset of the decade.
Yeah I'm happy with my BTC.
I like some of Maher's takes, watch him regularly. but yeah, he is just another comedian talking about something out of his pay grade -- John Oliver also did a segment on bitcoin and while it was less editorialized than this, I found it to be largely based in ignorance too
but Maher does raise some decent points. crypto is in a dangerous mania phase and some coins/tokens have colossal market caps with zero product or ANYTHING to show for it. Cardano is a perfect example. Cardano barely exists outside of a theoretical concept. BNB is another bizarre token that appears to just be a copy/paste of another product, which then spams its own chain with tiny transactions to act like it's an ethereum competitor lol. these companies have market caps that rival some of the most important companies on the planet with products everyone uses.
ive been into bitcoin for a few years now, i'm into it. i like it, it's interesting to me. but everything seems extremely weird right now and i think it's long overdue for a big correction so people in the space can actually develop some working, applicable ideas

virtually none of the measures they just said will stop hacking and extortion or money laundering. so long as there are computers, there will be computer-based money. whether that's bitcoin or monero or something yet to be created, it cannot be stopped
if microsoft, amazon and whatever health company are sick of being hacked, they need to stop using sloppy/dated data storage methods. as it stands now, they have extremely large and valuable honeypots just sitting there. that is the problem, not crypto itself

This is the point I don't get about this whole affair. Harry and Meghan say they want privacy, yet they spill their beans stories to Oprah for a world wide audience?
How can you have a private life while at the same time you blab everything to strangers.
So why? They said they did not get any money. What is the purpose of the interview except to make The Royal Family look bad.
you can't put a price on good publicity, can you? the royals weren't paid, and oprah claims they didn't know what she was going to ask... but do we really care? oprah's production company made $7-10 million from the interview. oprah is literally their neighbour. she went to their wedding. need we say more about the angle of the interview?
meanwhile, harry and meghan's stock has never been higher -- which is good for them, because their budding media empire signed a reported $140m worth of contracts in the last few months. what better way to kick off a media empire than with the mogul of all moguls?
but no, this is just about "setting the story straight." nothing sets a story straight like lobbing vague accusations at the royal family while the media swarms looking for details
i think i'm with piers on this one -- are we really to believe that poor meghan markle was suicidal... and yet her prince husband couldn't even fly in a therapist privately? there's not a single therapist or psychologist in the whole of britain that could have helped markle out of the public eye? meanwhile, harry's narcissistic windbag mother was allowed to use taxpayer money to fly helicopters all over the england to visit psychics?

And some more news from the cybercurrency front that leaves me shaking my head and feeling confused and old:
Ethereum upgrade that will destroy coins sparks anger among miners - with some planning to fight back
The planned upgrade to the Ethereum network that will start to destroy ether coins has angered many of the cryptocurrency's miners, with some trying to organize a form of strike to demonstrate their opposition.
very simply put:
-ethereum operates on gas (fees).
-in order to make a transaction of eth from one person to the next, you need to pay gas to incentivize the network to verify the transaction.
-the incentive is a small denomination of eth
-currently the ethereum network is so jammed with activity that gas prices have gone way too high because people want their transactions verified quickly and therefore pay high incentives to get the verification
-this is not sustainable, especially when it comes to small transactions which have smaller fees and therefore get pushed to the back of the line
the new protocol upgrade is an attempt to finally decrease gas fees as an attempt to finally stop network congestion and make the network more user friendly
miners are unhappy because they're the ones who verify the network. in other words, the gas fees you're paying above are the exact same ones they're benefiting from. in other words, ethereum is proposing to cut their profits by making the network more user friendly
its understandable why miners are cranky, but it's inevitably because ethereum has been planning to get away from that form of mining for years now
side note: the burning of coins is a great thing for the price of ethereum, generally speaking, as it will create more scarcity. miners are not upset about that, it's just an added part of the protocol update

Maybe I am not empathetic but when you have the privilege to make these sort of complaints while being interviewed by Oprah I kind of don’t see the point in caring. You have it way better than 99% of people
There’s way more important crap going on.
this is obviously true - but I think what makes this story so fascinating for people is that it has become -- as Politico put it -- a Rorschach test for political and social ideologies. in traditional low culture fashion, the roleplay is being performed on a stage using populist language and triggering words. but there actually isn't a clear picture at all. the cognitive dissonance required for some of these posts boggles the mind - you willfully have to ignore one detail to focus on the other, then create a story out of it
this is pure media schizophrenia

You've heard about Diana, right?
"Duped"? I think maybe you've been duped by lumping all "celebrities" into one category and judging based on that.
You assign "celebrity" to a human being and label according.... but really she's just a person who fell in love and now has a child....she doesn't want to become another "victim". I think you're maybe missing the point here. They're actually wanting to back away from celebrity culture...as it poses very real threat and danger to their family. I guess you have to be a parent to understand that....nothing in the world is more important.
Someone who is trying to reach out because "she doesn't want to live anymore" is worth listening to. I feel like you're jaded and are missing the very real narrative here - desperation isn't fun. Royals or not...these two felt desperate. Abandoned. Isolated. Celebrity status doesn't make people immune to those things.
You don't always "pick" who you fall for in this life...sometimes it just happens and you try your best to navigate the waters that come with that but no one has to stand for bad treatment. She's not a victim because a victim would stay stuck and quiet. It takes courage to do what they've done and I applaud them. No one has to live under those conditions...and I'd trade it all in too if that was the price that came with the title.
"Making fun of" is a little different than racist death threats.
QuoteYou assign "celebrity" to a human being and label according.... but really she's just a person who fell in love and now has a child

no idea why you're giving so much emotional credence these cartoonish people. i obviously disagree, and i'll go so far as to say you cannot isolate the individual from the royal family, it's a transcendent position.
this isn't about falling in love with a janitor or a lawyer and dealing with the associated circumstances. it's about putting on a $10,000 gown one day, then going on a humanitarian mission to Botswana the next. the absurdity lies in the fact that she signed up to be a representative of the very thing that helped create the class divides she symbolically pretends to bridge. at the end of the day a 'progressive' duchess is still a duchess
in other words, meghan signed up to be on the team that sits at the peak, the literal peak, of western privilege, but still she wants to be an independent girl and create her own media empire in the wings "away from celebrity culture," only putting on her crown and walking through the great halls from time to time.
honestly, the fact that one of the 150-year-old skeletons jittering around the castle said something racist isn't surprising at all. let's be real dude, those halls and her very crown are relics of imperialism, colonialism, racism, privilege, and elitism and so on. the question i have is when and where do these convictions and emotions of hers kick in?
QuoteCelebrity status doesn't make people immune to those things.
quite the contrary, celebrity status perpetuates those things
in other words...
QuoteNo one has to live under those conditions
you're absolutely right. and yet some people sign up for it.

2022 FIFA World Cup
in Off-Topic General
Posted · Edited by GLASSJAW
When I say better team I mean in general. France was absolute garbage for the first 3/4 of the game, there's no question. But I maintain a healthy France would demolish that Argentina squad any day of the week.
How many reports came out about players not training, in isolation, experiencing some "mystery virus" in the last few days alone? Not to mention all the stars they had sidelined from the start. Varane coming off today looked like he needed to be put on a drip.
I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but this is FIFA and Qatar we're talking about. how long before we hear that the French team's dressing room was used as a COVID ward in off hours?
dude of course he passes the test, he's Messi. who cares about stats, though? great, he scored a bunch of penalty kicks and he was able to create some chances against, hmm [checking notes] Saudi Arabia and Mexico.
what I said was that I don't get it RELATIVE TO THE HYPE. my point is that when Messi touches the ball and beats a Polish defender, commentators -- both professional and amateur -- lost their collective minds as if each touch was a stroke of genius no forward has ever done before. that's what I don't get. it's very clearly about a culture and celebrity and NOT about stats. if this were about stats, why didn't Griezmann or Bruno Fernandes or the like get the same narrative delicacy or 1/20th the interest?
this world cup could have had a number of great story lines, instead there was just one. Messi. Messi. MESSI!!!! Frankly I just found it exhausting. Of all the great WC performances I've seen in my life, Messi's will ultimately be forgettable compared to the likes of Fat Ronaldo, Cannavaro, or the tiki taka Spaniards and so on. I'll remember the story for sure, but the fact that Messi only scored 2 or 3 open play goals despite booting 32 shots is something I'll likely forget very, very quickly.
