  1. had a significant personal achievement today, so i have had a few drinks throughout the afternoon. finally got around to trying that Lions Winter Ale that you guys talk about. I really like it. pleasantly surprised, in fact, as i havent been huge on other granville beers IIRC
  2. stoner philosophizing at its most tedious. i thought it was just awful in almost every way. i can't believe how much praise the movie gets for its visuals. at least 40% of the movies colossal runtime is shot from a third person perspective where an idiot's head is blocking a massive chunk of your screen. what's with the red tinge through most of it, too? its like it was shot through cellophane P.S. HAVE YOU READ THE TIBETAN BOOK OF THE DEAD? I'M READING THE TIBETAN BOOK OF THE DEAD, YOU GOTTA READ THE TIBETAN BOOK OF THE DEAD. HERE, BORROW MY COPY OF THE TIBETAN BOOK OF THE DEAD. DID YOU KNOW THE MOVIE IS INFLUENCED BY THE TIBETAN BOOK OF THE DEAD? how many times do they mention that stupid book in the first 35 minutes? it's like whatever depth or literary merit the movie pretends to have is hammered home so many times that it just becomes boring.
  3. Master of None: 7/10 Checked out the 10 episode show from Aziz Ansari based on the overwhelming critical praise. Definitely don't like it as much as some, but it was enjoyable. I think on an emotional/intellectual level the show really makes an impact on me, as I can really relate to some of its plotlines (not about race or anything, mind you). But at the same time, I couldn't really get over how flat and/or annoying almost every character is. Some of the line deliveries sounded like they were being read directly off a page. These people must be Aziz's real friends, because actors they are not. The vast majority of the jokes just aren't funny to me, and the "clever" dialogue exchanges just seems so forced, especially when the girlfriend came around. Fantastic ending, though.
  4. Hunger: 10/10 Steve McQueen is a remarkable talent, and this is a perfect movie imo. Very difficult to watch at times, especially towards the end. The scene in the middle of the film, the 20 minute single shot of rapid-fire dialogue between Fassbender and GoT's Liam Cunningham is one of the most impressive things I've seen in a movie. Great stuff.
  5. everest: 7/10 thought it was pretty exciting, even though i've already read krakauer's book and seen the documentary. that movie had like 15 of my phobias rolled into 2 hours
  6. easily in my top 5 bowie tracks, even without vocals
  7. harold and maude - 8/10. haven't seen this one for a while, still holds up in its 'weird'ness/message.
  8. I agree, really strong episode. Even though it's so over the top stupid, I'm laughing as much as I am wincing at the violence.. that scene where the deadite gets stabbed 20 times in the neck and blood is spraying everywhere... can't help but laugh. The fork into the eye..? ugh.
  9. inside out: 7.5/10 took me a while to watch this but i'm glad i did. the message isn't exactly complex, and it's pretty easy to figure out in like 4 minutes of the film. it never really develops beyond the super basic premise, imo. still, it's strangely nice and therapeutic to see the message represented on screen in such a cute way. that said, as is the case with most Pixar movies, I thought the tension-driven scenes completely lacked any actual tension. and the humans in the movie are just really obnoxious outlines of people that may seem vaguely familiar to you (hurf hurf, men like sports, hurffff women like exotic men with accents). the real stars of the movie are just exaggerated, cutesy emotions and how you relate yourself to them.
  10. I'd like to see you try. Does this look like the face of someone who could be mocked?
  11. Down by the River using polysyllabic words to endorse rape. First hate speech against the Chinese, and now this... How low will our friend DbtR go before the week is through?
  12. Yeah, Empire has always been like the de facto #1 of the series judging by every conversation I've ever had. And I really get it, it's a really good movie - just too noisy for me at times, whereas New Hope is just so rich in character. That said, Yoda sure is great. That line in Empire where he gets the X Wing out of the swamp and Luke says "I can't believe it!" - Yoda responds with "That is why you fail" is probably my favourite little exchange in the series
  13. I wanna check this out. I forgot that I watched the documentary put on by IFC called "American Nightmare" which was pretty good. It's a handful of directors (Wes Craven, David Cronenberg, John Landis, George Romero, etc.) discussing the cultural events/climate in the 70s that influenced their early films. The doc is short (60-ish mins), and sorta descends into just praise-praise-praise at the end, but well worth a watch for anyone who is interested in this stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5v03a_zCSM
  14. star wars: new hope: 10/10. my fav of the series star wars: empire strikes back: 9/10, first 40 minutes are almost tiring in how EVERYTHING goes wrong constantly, but really makes up for it with the drama in the middle star wars: return of the jedi: 8.5/10, has probably aged the worst of the bunch in an odd way. IMO it has pacing issues on Endor, stuff just takes too long to happen. han has stupid one liners got a bit annoying at times. anyway, major emotional pay off in the end. luke vs. vader is so brief, yet so good. is there a better character arc in movie history than Luke Skywalker's? it's so simple, yet so effective. but of course i say that as somebody who watched this stuff 100x as a child, so nostalgia plays a major part in my appreciation -- since i cannot seem to enjoy any sci fi/action movie anymore
  15. the shining: 9.5/10, Kubrick is a genius silence of the lambs: 8.5/10. i really don't think there is a narrative i find less boring than Proud Cop Proves Him/Herself to Even More Proud Co-Workers. but there are 2 or 3 of them that I really enjoy, and this is one. ash vs. evil dead ep 1: 8/10, funny, lots of references to original, obvs. some really great scenes. loved that part with the projection on the boxes. Campbell is on his game for sure, and that one gal is super pretty. buuuut I'm a whiner, so i'll say the Raimi of old was sorely missed when that really bad CGI was used in a few scenes. i don't care if it's part of the B movie aesthetic, seeing that iMovie-grade blood effect is a major killjoy.
  16. this starts tomorrow. Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi together again. Season 1 is 10 episodes, and I think it was already picked up for a season 2, but I'm not sure if it'll be Campbell and Raimi for that.
  17. Thinner: 5/10 This is one of the more ridiculous movies I think I've seen recently, and certainly the worst Stephen King-based movie I've seen in a while. It's so bad and poorly acted that it's kinda, sorta mildly entertaining. But I definitely have to give it points for being one of the few movies built ENTIRELY of extremely unlikable, horrible people
  18. http://www.avclub.com/article/the-can-natalie-portman-act-conundrum-52236 pretty good article about portman how we judge acting
  19. the visit: 6.5/10 rock bottom expectations for a Shyamalan film, so i was pleasantly surprised. has some incredibly lame parts (kid rapping), but i think a child/young viewer would find them amusing. but that young viewer would probably also find the scary bits to be too scary, so who is the movie for? i dunno. it was cute and had a few creepy/tense scenes.
  20. I hope it's because you think she's not and not because she's in good movies?
