i dunno, maybe. probably depends on like 'artistic ambition' or whatever. jackie chan wanted to do drama, but who wants to see jackie chan do drama? and you don't see woody taking his own serious roles. sometimes when you have a thing, it just works. eisenberg has a thing.. and i guess it doesn't work haha
-
glad you guys liked it why does everybody dislike eisenberg? is it because he's so nervous-y? i don't mind him, he's sorta just a one trick pony, like michael cera and woody allen.

what? the ending is what makes it

re-watched The Mist. pretty good! 7/10

Youth: 6.5/10 This is one that I think a lot of people would hate. It had a mixed standing ovation AND boos at Cannes, lol? I thought the trailer made is seem like a linear, sorta old person's Lost in Translation - but nope. It's a purebred Italian arthouse movie, very similar to the stuff made by Federico Fellini. the basic plot is often totally interrupted by stuff totally beautiful (yet emotionally vacant) scenes of... stuff. Things loosely related to secondary characters. Visually it's a beautiful movie, and there's some really great music in it (Sun Kil Moon performs throughout; and in fact, SKM's song "Birds of Flims" is ABOUT being on the set of this movie) - but I didn't think it had any heart. Technically great, but no soul. Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel (sp?), and Paul Dano are all great in it, though.

This leaked today. Really excited to watch it tomorrow. As for tonight, I watched Re-Animator: 7/10. Some really funny/abusrd/ridiculous bits, and a pretty good plot - minus the whole mind control aspect, was that ever even explained? haha

I, on the other hand, am not a huge DFW fan. in fact, I don't think I've read a single word he wrote. he is like Pynchon in that I have Infinite Jest and Gravity's Rainbow sitting on my bookshelf, taking up two feet and ten pounds of space. but I've never had the nerve to pick them up - despite my being able to slog through Ulysses(!). this really got me curious about Infinite Jest, though. i think i'll give it a try. and I am curious how your knowledge of/experience with DFW will influence how much you can/do enjoy the movie. i read one negative review where it said Segel plays up DFW as a stereotype - but given how the dialogue is transcripted, I'm not sure how that could really be the case? I guess through what dialogue is selected or emphasized? I don't know

End of the Tour: 10/10 I always find it difficult to rate documentaries and biopics, because it's really difficult (for me at least) to differentiate the subject from the movie. this makes sense considering the two genres are generally not that artful. they sorta just exist to tell a story. like the story? like the movie. I guess End of the Tour is like a cross-section between those genres, because it's a biopic about the most infamous literary suicide case since Hemingway, David Foster Wallace, and a Rolling Stone journalist. the dialogue is basically just transcription - as it exists in script as it did on tape and documented form. however, the screenplay was written by a dude named Donald Marguiles who saw (in the transcription) something far, far more deep than may have actually been there: two dudes kinda jealous of each other, unsure of whether they fit in life (if at all) idk, man. Jason Segel gives one of the most convincing "subtle" performances I have ever seen. Jesse Eisenberg does his thing, but it's much more toned down. Music from (early) REM, Brian Eno, and a really subdued score from Danny Elfman, and a script by a Pulitzer prize winner. Definitely won't be for everyone. it's essentially two talking heads/clashing egos discussing America, philosophy, fame, and literature. but it is just done very well I'm selling this hard because it made NO money in theatres, has no hype, nothing. strong RT (92%). definitely check it out if it sounds appealing to you.

well when you word it like that...

Interstellar seems to be such a polarizing movie. I thought it was really good. Enjoyed it way more than most other Nolan films, which is odd considering how picky I am about sci fi. Tho I agree it starts to get a little silly towards the end. Anyway, I don't know if I already posted about it, but: Mr Holmes: 6.5-7/10. Really undecided about how much I enjoyed this. It was good, and well acted, but kinda boring. Evil Dead (2013): 7.5/10. Can't believe how much gore and blood is in this. Even though it's so obviously fake, I found myself wincing through a number of scenes. Definitely deserves points for how uncomfortable it made me feel

parquet courts is seriously amazing. they're like velvet underground meets pixies meets sonic youth

the peak of burt reynolds' career is in a movie where he watches his friend get bum ravaged by a hillbilly anyway, after Monty's review I'm going to give Evil Dead (remake) another watch tonight. I really enjoyed it the first time. hope it holds up!

bite yer tongue, boy.

idk, that song is pretty fresh

return of the living dead: 6.5 good first 40 minutes, good ending. but there's a bit in the middle that is just a lot of screaming and a lot of sorta boring drama. of course this could just be because i've seen the film so many times since i was a kid. i dunno. definitely entertaining, though 'typical army f--- up!'

fav halloween songs?

can't say All is Lost is a movie I've had the desire to re-watch, but it sure was enjoyable the first go around

Dope: 6.5/10 What started off really, really strong, was totally overcooked with the last hour. Movie just gets way, way too big. Very strange that a movie about a "90s hip hop geek" would utilize such cheesy, garbage contemporary music for its emotional scenes, but hey.

The beta is totally free, dude. Just give it a download if you're curious. It isn't as "good" feeling as CoD, like the movement feels a little bit chunky, not as fast and fluid - but it's definitely not a bad "feeling" game. I, personally, am struggling to figure out the weapons too. I've played a lot of multiplayer FPS games at a pretty high level, and this game is somewhat confusing in terms of hit registration and damage. It's very difficult, at least for me, to tell when someone is (vs. should be) taking damage. I can't tell if I'm lagging, or if hitboxes are just different from what I'm used to. The game could use that CoD "thud" sound when someone is being hit, tbh Anyway, the atmosphere in it is cool. Good music, cool weapons. You can use ships from time to time. It's good. But not really customizable though (at least not in beta), and there's a lot of running towards a large choke point and dying Fun, but nothing to spend $80 on IMO

anyone playing the Battlefront beta? it's pretty fun, but not sure I'd buy it

Cooties: 1.5/10 - horror film starring Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, and a slew of other people you've seen on popular TV shows in recent years one of the worst movies I've seen recently. - the film has no ending, no conclusion, no cliffhanger. it just ends. - most of the jokes just aren't clever at all - the sound editing is so distractingly obnoxious. each thud has that deep, intense bass sound like you hear in a movie theater trailer. each "sharp" sound is like a blade being sharpened or something. it's just like someone trying to make every sound crisp as humanly possible, and it all just sounds fake - how is it possible for an 80 minute movie to feel so long?

the bee death was the most ridiculous for me. as if that strong looking guy couldn't just break the door... or better yet, why couldn't he just crawl under or jump over the stall? what a dummy. he deserved it

sleepaway camp: 7/10 the language in this movie is kinda funny. the way children swear at each other with such gusto made me chuckle a few times. but i was really expecting a bit more shock or camp out of this. don't get me wrong, it's campy, and a very bad movie - but i just wasn't super into it... until that ending. what the hell? lmao i was regularly kinda dumbstruck at the sheer homosexuality of it, with all the lil knobs poking through short shorts and stuff like that. half 80% naked greased up dudes running around everywhere. but yeah, i guess that explains that.
-
black mass: 7/10 this was better than i expected, but not something to write home about. very well acted, but i found some of the characters to be distractingly odd-looking. what's up with Depp's eyes? i love mobster stuff, as i always say, so the story is one i was familiar with and enjoy. but at times i kinda just felt like it was an imitation of Goodfellas or something. it could have been better, and more unique - but it definitely could have been worse.

Extras: 9.5/10 Re-watched this series again recently. Loses .5 for a few slower/not as funny episodes in season 1, but in some season 2 episodes i laughed harder than i have watching any other tv show. so good.
