watched every Terrence Malick movie over the last week or so. Most I had seen two or three times before, but wanted to check them out again.
Badlands: 9.5/10. Amazing score, simple-yet-great plot. Well-acted. Nicely shot. Great Malick-like writing. Loses a mark because I cannot get my head around the similarities between it and Bonnie & Clyde, and yet I have no idea if this is meant to be a commentary on it, or just the same sort of idea.
Days of Heaven: 9/10. I'm pretty sure I gave this one a 10 before, but this time I watched it I felt like something was missing. A few scenes actually felt a little rushed. It's only 90-ish minutes, and I really feel like it could have benefited from being like 20 minutes longer. But still, one of the most beautifully shot movies I've ever seen.
The Thin Red Line: 6/10. I really didn't care for this one very much. Nicely shot, but didn't like the language. Didn't like all the screaming. Didn't find the battle scenes particularly engaging at all. I've read stories about how much of this movie was left on the cutting room floor, and I think it really shows.
The New World: 9.5/10. A masterpiece. Totally under appreciated. Definitely won't be for everyone because of how the narrative is treated so slowly and with long shots of nothing.
Tree of Life: 10/10. Even with the silly dinosaur bit, this movie is amazing. Even less traditional narrative than New World, far more scenes of "stuff" -- but with amazing music and some of the best camera work I've ever seen. Lubezki at his best.
To the Wonder: 4/10. Gets a few points for the amazing visuals and music, and very attractive cast. But I couldn't figure out what was being said here, like at all. First time seeing it, but I can't imagine ever wanting to watch it again.
