  1. i'm curious to see this. Alex Garland is an interesting guy. I loooved his novel The Beach as a kid, but the Danny Boyle adaptation/movie was silly. and then his follow-up books weren't very good at all IMO. then he came out of nowhere as this high-tier screenwriter (Sunshine, 28 Days Later), and now he wrote/directed Ex Machina, which has 92 on RT strange career he has had.
  2. oh man, I really disagree. i think it's hilarious. yeah, it's mega-hyped, but for my taste it lives up to it and more -- despite the fact that 'zombie comedy' seems to now be a thing. none of them even come close to Shaun for me. least of all Zombieland, and that godawful Warm Bodies. but then again, could just be taste. I've only seen Hot Fuzz once, and I didn't enjoy it much at all. but that was when it first came out. I should give it another try
  3. colin ferrell can be such a clown, but him being in In Bruges, one of my all-time favs, totally gives him a get out of jail free card for the rest of his life. he does have some sense to him, and he does seek out work with interesting people
  4. yeah idk, i wasn't moved by it at all. i remember thinking early at one point 'oh my god this is going to make me cry' -- and then nothing. maybe i was just getting bored or something i dunno, i mean there's obviously a love story there. but it's a terrence malick love story. which means that love is displayed by showing Ferrell walking around with his head down while a voice over whisper-talks some difficult-to-follow language. it's not like they are sitting around saying i love uuuuuu more no i love uu mooore the most difficult selling point of the movie is how slow it is. but if you can tolerate a slow and long movie (almost 3 hours i think). the last 30 minutes alone make it worth it imo
  5. watched every Terrence Malick movie over the last week or so. Most I had seen two or three times before, but wanted to check them out again. Badlands: 9.5/10. Amazing score, simple-yet-great plot. Well-acted. Nicely shot. Great Malick-like writing. Loses a mark because I cannot get my head around the similarities between it and Bonnie & Clyde, and yet I have no idea if this is meant to be a commentary on it, or just the same sort of idea. Days of Heaven: 9/10. I'm pretty sure I gave this one a 10 before, but this time I watched it I felt like something was missing. A few scenes actually felt a little rushed. It's only 90-ish minutes, and I really feel like it could have benefited from being like 20 minutes longer. But still, one of the most beautifully shot movies I've ever seen. The Thin Red Line: 6/10. I really didn't care for this one very much. Nicely shot, but didn't like the language. Didn't like all the screaming. Didn't find the battle scenes particularly engaging at all. I've read stories about how much of this movie was left on the cutting room floor, and I think it really shows. The New World: 9.5/10. A masterpiece. Totally under appreciated. Definitely won't be for everyone because of how the narrative is treated so slowly and with long shots of nothing. Tree of Life: 10/10. Even with the silly dinosaur bit, this movie is amazing. Even less traditional narrative than New World, far more scenes of "stuff" -- but with amazing music and some of the best camera work I've ever seen. Lubezki at his best. To the Wonder: 4/10. Gets a few points for the amazing visuals and music, and very attractive cast. But I couldn't figure out what was being said here, like at all. First time seeing it, but I can't imagine ever wanting to watch it again.
  6. speaking of Manchester United, http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/apr/24/david-de-gea-new-deal-louis-van-gaal-manchester-united more fuel from LVG about DDG maybe not re-signing. I wonder how much Lloris would cost from Tottenham? surely he makes the most sense for a fill-in, given all the rumours of him wanting CL football
  7. if you like two teams, you like two teams. you really don't have to answer to anybody. but with that said, you are going to find people who consider it objectionable -- especially in the case of United and Madrid, since most supporters probably don't like Madrid because of all the lowballing and fleecing they've done of United over the years. and, oh yeah, because they just buy every good player on the planet. personally, I find it sort of difficult to even respect Madrid as a club. I just don't like their approach. but if you do, then so what. I don't really have a problem with liking two teams either, so long as you recognize there's a conflict. I won't lie, there's definitely a few times I have a soft spot for in a few leagues, for various reasons. I grew up watching Ligue 1 just as much as I did the premier league, but I will always choose England over France.
  8. honestly I've never even heard of him. The Tin Drum sounds familiar, but I certainly haven't read/seen it but lol @ "that awful kid"
  9. this post should be moved to Off Topic, i think.
  10. finally finished Lolita. good grief, what a masterpiece. even calling it that seems like an injustice or somehow selling it short. it is funny as hell, heartbreaking, unbelievably romantic (in a weird way), and just oozing with depth. seriously in a league of its own sometimes when i'm reading a book that i really want to 'grasp' or follow/understand, i will read a portion, then listen to the audiobook the next day (of the portion i had read), while doing dishes or whatever. it's a really good way to retain a lot of the information, i find. with that said, if anyone is at all interested in the audiobook, there is an absolutely fantastic version out there read by Jeremy Irons. if you cannot match a voice to the name, Irons is the dude who voiced Scar in the Lion King -- now imagine that voice reading through Humbert's perspective! it's just great.
  11. city of Porto produces fantastic, fantastic wine. only natural then that i support their team
  12. I don't know what "mostly" means. but for future reference, if anyone wants to discuss the books please just go start another thread. it is extremely annoying and unnecessary to do it here
  13. is there not a thread devoted to the books? why are people discussing them here
  14. what about 1&2 was horse crap to you? what about ep 3 was good? use spoiler tags for everyone else tho pls
  15. really enjoyed the first two, didn't care as much for the third (although it had a couple of great scenes). will watch #4 tomorrow.
  16. i haven't watched all 4 yet so i can't comment on the pacing, but GRRM has already told HBO how the story will play out. they don't need book, they already know. the show will conclude before the book series does
  17. already had someone send me a message with a character's name and a winky smily behind it. this is going to be too difficult. i've had the vast majority of the series spoiled already, i think i'll just watch ahead now so i can enjoy it on my terms
  18. HBO screwed up big time by handing out screeners for the season, or something. People in the industry just cannot be trusted, even. My friend told me that the entire season will be up soon (not sure where he got that info from) I feel conflicted. I want to watch, but I enjoy the week-to-week tension.
  19. I've only seen Shawshank once, and I pretty much agree with what Bookie said about it. I enjoyed it but didn't find it to be anything unique or amazing, nothing compared to the other 3 which round out my favourites, anyway. Of course it could just be nostalgia talking, but I have a soft spot for the turbo cheese of Creepshow, Silver Bullet, and those more straight up horror movies. Carrie was pretty good, too.
  20. the dead zone: 7/10 this is straight up cheese, but i found it strangely enjoyable. ridiculous plot, some hammy acting, but really great atmosphere. made me want to explore or re-watch a bunch of old stephen king movies that i liked as a kid. anyone have any favourites? stand by me, the shining, and misery are easily my top 3
  21. the deer hunter - 7.5/10 never liked this one as much as some others do. really good acting, some very 'classic' scenes, but i don't know. find some bits of it to be a bit boring, tbh.
