back to the future 9/10 been a while since i've seen this. very cute movie. unbelievably tight script. loses a mark because it sorta drags on at the end

along with Lolita (which I am about halfway through now, and think is unbelievably good), I'm also going through Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman again. pretty much all of the Off Topic post-spammers should give it a read. especially the ones who care, or pretend to care, about all the news they post/spam. basically, the gist of the book is just encouraging a hyper-critical examination of what information we consume and why we consume it -- and how that reflection leads into a bit of a rabbit hole of meaningless information. considering the book is about 30 years old and Postman couldn't even factor the internet into his discussion is remarkable. its content is as valuable today as ever. a bit jargon-y at times, but it's short. and extremely rewarding, i think.

it's spongebob. so i'm guessing no, probably about 3 years too old

i'm about 50 pages into Nabokov's Lolita for the first time. i dunno why i've put this off for so long, but so far its shockingly good.

oh my god, this is mind-bogglingly impressive

felt like watching something tacky and glossy, so i picked MAN OF STEEL: 4/10 the product placement in this movie was utterly soul crushing. the superman actor had zero emotion. very little tension in any of the action. the sci-fi scenes were very zzzz. but unlike other comic book movies that rely so heavily on flying and cgi-based action (spider man, in particular), this stuff was done with enough blur and shaky camera work that it wasn't so obviously terrible and immediately dated. i'm sure it'll look bad in a year or so, but there were only a few scenes that really had me cringing, CGI-wise -- this is opposed to the spiderman movies which look fake as hell, start to finish the movie has a few nice shots scattered throughout. honestly, it probably could have been a significantly better movie if it cut out all the spaceships and stuff.

i watched it with someone the other day and they didn't like it, so i revoke my suggestion

haha citizenfour, 7/10: really interesting story/subject, but i wasn't sure if the movie itself was enjoyable. a lot of talking head stuff. a lot of heads talking about what is already established in the 'story' -- lots of shots are held for no apparent reason. watching snowden quietly shave for 3 or 4 minutes is not interesting to me. story alone makes it worth watching. song of the sea, 7/10: movie completely lacked any emotional kick for me, but it had really beautiful irish music, and some really unique animation/art. so sick of this glossy, zero character pixar/dreamworks junk. cute characters and the story make up for the lack of emotion tho.

No manager can make silver into gold. United have far too many gaps on the field to fill, IMO. Any person who expected a top two finish from United this season was totally oblivious, I think. They are four or five players away from being a world class team, but you could probably say that about a lot of fringe clubs, so who knows. -

Think there's any chance of this happening? It seems like such a logical move to me. Wenger isn't really improving Arsenal, and PSG aren't exactly living up to expectation. If Arsenal wants to move on from Wenger, PSG seems like a perfect move for Wenger -- go home and end on a high note. -

can an organization offer a contract to another manager if that manager is under contract? if Blanc gets sacked after this season, could PSG offer Wenger a contract, for example, even though I believe he's still contracted at Arsenal for next year? -

yeah, I never cared much for the story of Naked City, as I am not a noir guy at all. just liked the visuals. Never seen Once Upon a Time in America, and I have no idea why since I love mafia movies and Leone. but the American cut is only two hours. you could try that?

i actually thought the first episode had some seriously hilarious lines, but didn't really catch many in episode 2 or 3. the problem with the show, for me, is that it's like centered around a Tracy Morgan like character, rather than the cynical 30 Rock gal. but that could change as Kimmy gets more, i dunno, experienced or whatever
-
really??? i love Fey, and I thought there were a lot of really funny lines, but I couldn't stand Kemper's character at all. to the point where i gave up midway through the third episode maybe i'll give it another go, but ugh

imo, the woody allen starter pack is three movies: Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Crimes and Misdemeanours. everything else will probably just be a matter of taste and woody-tolerance (i, for some strange reason, like the totally unfunny, unpopular Whatever Works, while some like Sweet and Lowdown, which I didn't enjoy at all). but in his best movies, location plays a huge part. to go completely off the map, there are two other New York movies I thought of one is called the Naked City, which is a noir film from 1948. you can find the whole thing on youtube, but I saw the restored Criterion edition that was released a few years ago and it was a beautiful little movie, with some really great shots of the city. it won a few Oscars, including one for its cinematography. and another is the far less known Style Wars, which I've seen a few times. It's really dated, a little kitschy, but really fascinating at the same time. It's basically about the origins of graffiti in the city. it's a far more culture-based new york movie, less than a visual one, but it's still worth the 80 minutes.

his last one was Magic in the Moonlight, which wasn't very well-received, but I enjoyed it a fair bit. Cute movie IMO.

lol, glad you liked it. woody allen is my fav filmmaker by far. don't really care about his personal life at all, personally. one, he was never found guilty of anything. and two, if my appreciation for art were hinged on my ability to agree with the moral or ethical choices made by artists, i wouldn't have much to enjoy the new world: ??/10 i like terrence malick a lot, but i had some issues with this. i think i would have loved it had i seen it before Tree of Life, but this time around i struggled with the imagery mixing with a narrative that i didn't find all that interesting. the IDEA of the story is great (the birth and foundation of america), but the love story aspect i found somewhat distracting because it seemed sorta simple or something? like there were some small ideas mixing with a huge one. but the rest of the movie was pretty much great. i guess it's silly of me to consider 'love' to be a small idea, but i just meant the actual story of john smith/pocahontas or whatever, i didn't find as moving as i probably should have. definitely one to re-watch
