  1. excuse me, Sterling has been accused of racism and found guilty of it numerous times. he has been given endless opportunity to fix himself, publicly and privately. which thread did I call you Hitler/Stalin in?
  2. uh, just because i disagree with you doesn't mean i didn't read your every word. i think your opinions on most issues are absolutely hilarious. totally crass. this has nothing to do with my ability to 'function on a committee' and it has nothing to do with me being 81 years old somewhere down the line. i have read plenty of your posts, and i think they all lead to the same conclusion: you're an absolute (insert 'barb' here) also, and more importantly: search for irony elsewhere: i didn't compare your attitudes to Stalin or Hitler. I didn't mention Stalin or HItler once. That was DefCon. here's the REAL irony in all of this: you're telling me to read your arguments and listen to your side of the debate, then you attribute quotes to me that I never even said or supported or even commented on. Hitler? Stalin? What is wrong with you? Anyway, saying "this isn't the worst example of racism" is, as i said previously, relative privation. it's a stupid argument. who cares if its the worst? good grief. similarly, almost every other 'point' you make is hinged on your speculation, cynicism ('den of thieves?'), with irrefutable and vague comments here and there. It's not even a debate, there's nothing substantial being said. claims like "this isn't the worst act of racism, and the NBA is pandering to a den of thieves" is meaningless to me, as it should be everyone else
  3. who is the villain in the new spider man, anyway? loved the comics as a kid, but couldn't stand that last movie. among the few who actually liked that toby maguire, or whatever his name is, as parker
  4. that Hobbit one is better than the actual movie
  5. just read this post, and totally agree. the REAL issue here should be why didn't the previous commissioner come down on the racism that exists within the 'old boy's club' (or 'the culture') before? he was an enabler and part of the problem. really happy that the new commissioner took a stand so early in his tenure, and hopefully this sets a standard that will consistently be held, with or without media attention
  6. i don't really care about the Bruins one way or another, but man, Thornton just looks like a dumb person. something about his entire face, his head. he looks as i imagine a neanderthal would have.
  7. no question about it. hilarious and kind of ironic that people are trying to criticize moralists who want him gone, while suggesting the NBA has some sort of a moral imperative to 'help' this billionaire jerk whose racism has been well documented for years. get him all the help he needs, but until he's "fixed," he has no place representing the business he does
  8. viking mama, what in the world do you mean 'get him counselling'? what is counselling going to do? he's a dinosaur. he is part of a culture. he is not the sole problem here, he is a chunk of a cultural issue--he admits it himself getting rid of Sterling isn't going to fix the culture, but the previous commissioner didn't do anything about this stuff. he was an enabler. the NBA now has a new commissioner, and he's taking a stand, trying to change that culture one step at a time. this is a good step. private conversation or not, Sterling has had LOADS of lawsuits (some he won, some he lost, many he bought out) from DECADES of hard-line racism. that's the only context that matters in the big picture. his nasty girlfriend and her rights violation is an afterthought. viking mama showing, once again, a remarkable tolerance for bigotry. what a surprise. you think this is an issue about free speech? wait, so Sterling's thoughts are bad enough for us to all rally around him and force him into counselling, but they aren't bad enough for the NBA--a business--to want him out of that business? how do you determine what is or isn't a good enough punishment for a business model you know absolutely nothing about? why do you think this is a free speech or civics issue? it's a business--and the issue is systemic, its a cultural issue. it is not Sterling himself. counselling is not going to change anything, just as firing him won't change anything. at least one is a start, showing how the NBA will not tolerate the racism it enabled for so many years under the previous commissioner.
  9. even if old school racists didn't exist, or don't exist in the numbers they once used to, it doesn't matter, because we now live in a culture (the same 'culture' that Sterling repeatedly refers to in the audio) that is built on racism. even if it isn't clear-cut racism, it is absolutely systemic. we live in the world those old school racists created! of course removing Sterling won't change that, but i don't really get how you can say its "a bit much" -- the dude has a long history of doing bad things. here is an interesting article about it: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/commish-adam-silver-s-bold-ban-of-clippers-owner-donald-sterling-was-long-overdue-from-nba-201427444-nba.html the NBA has a new commissioner and i don't care if its "political," he made the right decision. i don't even care if you want to be a cynic about it and say it was just business to appease the self-righteous groups who called for Sterling's head without recognizing the 'real issues,' because it was good business in the long run, especially if those decisions are made with consistency. anyway, i don't even get what the OP is suggesting. decades of racism are not comparable to "saying the wrong thing sometimes" or "oops, sometimes i say something bad" -- the woman who recorded the audio is OBVIOUSLY goading him on, and its OBVIOUSLY staged, but who the hell cares? that's a non-issue in comparison. she'll be sued, no doubt. Sterling will get half his money back that he lost to the NBA, and that'll be that. violation of privacy or not, the issue here is crazy ass Sterling and "the culture" he perpetuates. all apologists can go down with him, as far as i'm concerned
  10. ^ good little review. wish everyone wrote blocks about their opinions on stuff. fun to read (not being sarcastic) anyway, i just made the mistake on reading a bunch of stuff on Bryan Singer's, uhhh, "personal life" and his rather interesting casting couch habits (alleged?) hollywood is disgusting
  11. good grief, a totem pole of racism you're right, i'm getting absolutely nothing out of this
  12. which parties are you talking about, and can you give me a bit more of a detailed description on how their actions are just as bad and detrimental? how do you quantify each cause and its progress or detriment to a race gap bridge?
  13. okay, you said the conversation is "hardly about race" and that this is all "character assassination" based on people prematurely jumping to the conclusion that this dude's a racist... all the while you're simultaneously saying "its clear he has race problems"? lmao despite the man being sued multiple times, and having legal bills and settlements worth millions upon millions of dollars (not even including this Clippers one) all based on discrimination and racism, you believe the public rejection of him is based on CNN? and ignorance because they didn't get to the bottom of what he's saying... like you did? He is just the victim of a "slut" ex-girlfriend? and you think OTHER people are being presumptuous? anyway, why wasn't it a public outrage when he was fined millions of dollars for having racist real estate ventures? dunno. that is a fair point--almost. it was a different NBA commissioner and i'm not sure the NBA fishes too deeply into non-league related business practices of its owners. however, this call was about the NBA: the owner was telling someone to NOT bring a black person to his games because it goes against the "culture" he believes in. that is racism. pure and simple. but that is a non-starter. who cares? saying it's an overreaction now because it was an under-reaction during his other trials is sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. nice try at being a contrarian though.
  14. bold 1: listen to the audio, please. just because he says he isn't a racist doesn't mean he isn't a racist Sterling says he doesn't want his girlfriend to broadcast her public association with black people. You think the issue here is the "public association" and not the "black people" part. Which is totally incongruent with the entire nature of the call. Sterling asks her "why are you taking photos with minorities?" His girlfriend asks whats wrong with blacks and minorities, and he responds by saying she doesn't "understand the culture" -- she asks "what culture?" and he says "people feel certain things. Hispanics feel certain things towards blacks. Blacks feel certain things towards other groups, its been that way historically" -- this is literally his attempt to justify and contextualize HIS OWN RACISM, because he says right after that she should "maybe adjust to the world" because her lack of racism doesn't line up with the culture that he is "living in" and is HAS to continue living in. His words. She says she gets that's how Sterling was raised and thats "his" culture, and she respects that. But Sterling asks "why do you have to disrespect them (meaning "the world" he clarifies) -- and this is the same world that HE believes is racist, just like him (the "historical" "culture") The first three minutes of the entire conversation are him saying racist things. How can you say it hardly seems like a race issue? You are CHOOSING to ignore the racist declarations he makes, and the racist subtext to the other things he says, and instead you just think its about her being with other men, period. Her being a "slut" as you say. There's no reason to believe that at all. Bold 2: irrelevant. what the hell difference does that make? lmao bold 3: he has been sued multiple times for discrimination based on race -- how do you determine what is a genuine racist or not? if the recorded conversation isn't racist enough for you, what about refusing to rent to Hispanics because they "smoke, drink and just hang around the building," and black people because "black tenants smell and attract vermin." -- is he not a genuine racist? saying one person is more racist than the next, and therefore we should stop reacting so intensely over one racist person, is relative privation and totally, totally stupid. bold 4: no, there is not "more to the notion" you're putting forward, because there is nothing to the notion at all, and there's plenty of evidence to show that he's a lunatic racist. being old and out of touch is not an excuse.
  15. the gist: you're trying to criticize other people for being paranoid and unreasonable while displaying traits of paranoia yourself, with bizarre justification that doesnt reach beyond speculation and generalization (people this, public that) and no, there was nothing intended beyond that
  16. i didn't say you're a troll poster, i said i can't tell if you're trolling. you were spot on with the 'dumb' part, though! your fashionable (re: substance-free) cynicism is a reflection of your own regressive attitude, it isn't an accurate picture of how the world "truly is" or something. tossing out a bunch of generalities and trivializing the concerns of others, like you've done in this thread, isn't some demystifying act where you reveal "people" for who they really are. if you believe anything you say is, or can be, substantiated with more than just (what reads like) delusion, then you should do or show it. but until then, it's you who pads your sophomoric, CoNTRoVerSiaL rants with paranoia... ironically, while criticizing the "paranoid people" all around you. just because you're anchored by a tolerance for racism doesn't mean the world lags with you get some help
  17. you say the dumbest stuff on here, can't ever tell if you're trolling or not
  18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYIsa_u_C-s
  19. started watching Mad Men. looooove it. this song is played in the first episode and it blew my mind
  20. i read the Crying of Lot 49 recently and just couldn't get into it. although when i read about the book after i'd finished it, i think i learned to appreciate it more. but the process sorta did me in, and I'm pretty sure thats one of his easier books? i have owned Gravity's Rainbow for like 8 years and i haven't even be able to attempt it maybe pynchon just isn't my guy, but i'm definitely interested in the movie
  21. i was laughing in yesterday's ep when his brother was talking about joffrey's cat-related threat oh that joffrey
  22. slow development, the worst dialogue in the show, questionable cgi at times. compared to other characters in the show, she's utterly witless, not a whole lot of personality outside of 2 or 3 characteristics. with all the interesting stuff going on in the rest of the narrative, its kinda boring to spend 15 minutes watching her do the same thing she did two episodes ago, again a personal pet peeve is how she's always shown looking over/standing in front of greenscreen landscapes. GoT CGI is good sometimes, questionable at others. always kind of annoys me when CGI is used for its own sake. dates the movie/show almost instantly. but that's just a personal distaste, as i said
  23. really? exact opposite of you, i put the books down because the story totally failed to grab me in that form. for me, it's actually more compelling as a tv show. seems cheap to dig at Martin "as a writer," given it is kinda trashy fantasy stuff, but i think the dialogue is cringe-worthy at times, and really great at others. i wonder if that's because Martin just writes cheesy stuff, or if its through novel-to-television translation where being concise is more important than being artful? do i really want to commit hours and hours to find out over the next 50,000 pages? idk either way, when i hear people gruffly command "I FORBID YOU TO DIE" i can't help but roll my eyes lmao. but then tonight's episode had plenty of great exchanges that make me want to run and pick up the books. anyway, thought tonight's episode was fantastic, minus the token awful dragon woman scene. really great atmosphere. great dialogue (as i said), and plenty to be excited for next week without there being some explicit cheap hook, a la breaking bad
