  1. any Linklater fans in here? that should be an interesting one.
  2. really? i've only been to NYC once, and over the span of three or four weeks i heard loads, upon loads, upon loads of racist or anti-immigration sounding comments. this one bus driver i spoke to absolutely let-loose on chinatown one day. it was intense. it was even worse in london, where having the wrong form of english accent is considered a sin! of course my limited experience isn't a proper representation of any diverse culture's "general disposition" (if such a thing exists), but i don't believe, even for a second, that local (as in native) new yorkers are indifferent towards the waves of immigrants who create insular communities surrounding the so-called "melting pot" that their families established long ago. don't buy it at all.
  3. yes, you disagree with the premise, and now you disagree with a metaphor. i know. and fair enough. not exactly what i would consider sophisticated contention, but if you ever read it, i'm sure you'll find your points addressed and new things to disagree with
  4. depends what the "commenting" is and what the movie is, obviously. comment on whatever you want, whenever you want. but my point is that you, like kodos, aren't actually saying anything in this thread. maybe you know that? i can't tell when you're trying to convince others of your intelligence and when you're being stubborn or a troll. but either way, saying the premise is 'hyperbolic' doesn't mean anything, because 999 times out of 1000, you can't intelligently criticize a thesis without reading the arguments. and you haven't read the book. so, the discussion really ends there. as for the book itself: someone don't like the premise? that's cool. its a controversial argument, no question. i brought it up because a few people in this thread made comments that are almost directly dealt with in the book itself. for anyone else interested, if you also 'peruse' some reviews you'll find that the general reception to the book (and its 'hyperbolic premise') was actually quite warm, from casual readers and professional critics. may not be a science or a manifesto for change, but the way it looks at history can definitely alter the way you understand or view sports right now
  5. interesting take on the premise of a book you haven't read. "hyperbolic." hmm. wow. yeah. really. nice. i really enjoyed your riveting, well-researched, wonderfully articulated critique of the history about african american treatment in sports the premise of a book great discussion, thanks for this
  6. interesting take on a book you haven't read, i'll keep that in mind
  7. http://www.amazon.com/Forty-Million-Dollar-Slaves-Redemption/dp/0307353141 good book for those interested. central argument is that the basketball court is just a metaphor for a new form of slavery (although you could probably make a similar argument for football, too)
  8. whaaaaaaaaa i had the option of watching this or staring at the back of a headrest on a plane. after 35 minutes, i chose the headrest
  9. it's a really good, cute movie. idk what that guy's on about. but the music does suck, especially when compared to the great Disney soundtracks out there (it just sounds like pop music).
  10. good lord that Zeppelin video is fantastic. Heart's performance is great, but seeing the band react is what makes it. I can't even begin to imagine all the things those men have seen and done... good lord, lives well lived
  11. lmao Moyes, what a farce Mourinho should just move north like he's always wanted
  12. have you seen him discuss trade proposals? that's literally just how he communicates.
  13. those people deserve as much serious consideration and attention as those who actually use the word "butthurt" in a sentence
  14. just because something is "just business" does not mean it's absolved from criticism you view the situation as this: you don't like the sign? don't shop there! others may view the situation as this: by having the sign there, you are creating or enforcing ethnic-based communities that inherently exclude large portions of a population i don't think you should be so "amazed" about this difference of opinion. if i lived in Vancouver and i had some corporation move in and try to create ethnicity-based divisions, i'd be a bit concerned as well
  15. are you seriously calling people "nazis" because they feel alienated by ethnicity-specific signage that literally divides and alienates consumer and capitalist interest by race? kind of ironic use of language, there, chap
  16. i almost felt embarrassed by how much i enjoyed it. held off on watching it for so long because i couldn't care less about cars or racing, but man, its very enjoyable
  17. do it prison style. go out in the yard and lift bags of water.
  18. what? Mud is a perfectly fine movie, totally has the reception it deserves (like 7.5 on IMDB and 98 on RT), it'll appeal to some people, but not others. i get that. it was just up my alley, i don't think its a masterpiece or anything Usual Suspects, on the other hand, i LITERALLY have no idea how anyone could watch that in 2014 and be impressed. yeah, Spacey is fine, but most of the people around him are laughably poor. ESPECIALLY that Baldwin guy, who has got to play the cheesiest, campiest character of the "good" 90s movies, without a shred of irony! it's meant to be serious! good grief. i watched it recently with a friend who hadn't seen it, and we both were laughing. that action sequence around the dock was so bad. i remember seeing it back in the day and not liking it either, but it really hasn't aged well at all
  19. yuck, terribly overrated movie 4/10 at best
  20. hated The Fountain as well. But I found Pi to be equally terrible
  21. I like the Da Vinci Code. the book isn't high literature or anything, but it's wonderfully entertaining IMO. I also liked the movie. really good score. hate on, yall
