(Prediction) Under Brad Shaw Poolman will be better than Tanev
Millerdraft replied to Arrow 1983's topic in Canucks Talk
Just when I thought we had managed to temper the negative feedback on Poolman you just had to go all: Didn’t you Arrow1983?! -
One more wasted year results in: 1. JT Miller’s agent letting management & ownership know in December that they are demanding a trade, hopefully by the deadline or they will let future free agents know that this ownership sits on player’s prime years without trying to do damage in the playoffs. 2. Horvat’s agent follows suit at season’s end and informs both ownership and management that he will not be wasting the rest of his prime while the franchise tries to find a fully developed top-six powerforward, in his prime, to replace the recently departed top-six powerforward in his prime. 3. Suddenly we are in the Buffalo Sabres’ rebuild model with Eichel (Pettersson) and Dahlin (Hughes), and not much else. How long was it before the losing led to the current Eichel situation?

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Brandon Sutter
Millerdraft replied to cuporbust's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Edmonton getting bounced in the 1st round year after year and in dire need of a defensive zone right handed faceoff specialist would have offered more, no question. -

Come on, man! Get with the program already! We hate all Canucks! -

Isn’t that kinda what solidified our ability to draft Petey & Hughes? -

So, a “poor man’s” Tanev (by salary compensation standards)! -

I’d also like to say that if this is the contract with the most risk to it, then we’re looking pretty golden because this contract is not some kind of immovable, buyout proof deal that’s gonna cost us $5m in cap space for five, six years… Let’s go Poolman! -

The bolded paragraph genuinely does not belong in this thread, it belongs in the OEL thread, and that’s not even mentioning that the OEL Garland trade was NOT about getting out from under “bad contracts”. This was about acquiring a top-six forward for a 1st round pick (is the JT Miller cost of acquisition ringing a bell here?) and Arizona getting out from a financial commitment that had run its course of positive returns for them (a disgruntled star after a disconnect between the coach and himself). The return they received for OEL was a 2nd round pick and the contracts that we sent the other way made the deal possible for us to fit it under the cap. As a convenient consequence of said move we were able to fill a top-4 D hole and a top-six forward hole in one fell swoop. Again though, continuing this conversation requires taking it to the other thread. This is the Tucker Poolman thread. -

Just the fact that he’s a RH defenceman mitigates much of the “risk”. There’s PLENTY of teams that would pluck almost any RHD that exhibits above average bottom pairing capabilities off waivers, if not trade for him, even if he craters here. Heck, even the most critical takes on this signing say he’s a high end bottom pairing guy that gets over his head in higher quality of competition situations. Just by supply alone RHD get “.overpaid” and we’re not talking $4m-$5m overpaid here, are we? There’s plenty of other more significant mistakes to worry about our cap structure (OEL, Hughes getting some stupid $9m AAV before we know exactly how much he can adapt defensively to become an all around Dman, Pettersson getting an 7-year/$70m offersheet, should we re-sign JT Miller at the age he’ll be, etc, etc). This contract is about six steps down the list of concerns. That by itself is telling about peoples’ biases. -

I had a huge write up about how these 4-year, $2m - $3m AAV contracts are a bit of a red herring argument, as somewhat missing the forest for the trees, when it comes to “overspending on bottom six forwards and bottom four pairing defencemen”, especially so in a rebuild but I’ll try to just summarize it into a couple sentences that should refocus this thread, hopefully. The concern seems to be that we will lose out on the cap flexibility to either sign or retain top-six forwards and top pairing Dmen which can be a valid critique, and even more so if you’re a fan of the Dubas/Shanaplan rebuild philosophy that strips all depth by paying “proper salaries to the low end of their roster”. The counter argument is that all the Canucks’ cap problems could’ve been solved by not taking a home run cut on a specific player our management thought would be a top-six for six years and instead striking out by finding out we had signed a bottom six forward for $4m - $5m AAV more than he was going to be worth. That was a concerning, potentially crippling, contract that led to all of our cap problems not the three separate “overpaid by a cumulative total $3m-ish” contracts. Our management made a calculated guess that this one player would work out with the twins and they lost that bet. When you swing and miss on commitments like that when a drafted core is ready to compete for a Cup then that is a real concern. Four years/$10m is not the same thing. Please take this hyper fear of bad, cap structure crippling contracts to the thread where it makes sense, the OEL thread. Swinging and missing on OEL is of far more consequence than swinging and missing on Tucker Poolman. Now, can we breathe some oxygen of positivity back into this thread? Let’s give this guy a chance before we start getting out the pails of tar and flocks of swans as we March on down to Mr Benning’s residence with our pitchforks in hand. -

Now do the inverse, Poolman’s AAV by % of the cap metric would have been a gargantuan $1.739m back in 2008. Totally comparable contract. -

And Quinn Hughes was, what, 7th overall? But I do understand what you’re saying. I’m just “arguing” for argument’s sake at this point! -

(Prediction) Halak doesn't make it ten games
Millerdraft replied to Arrow 1983's topic in Canucks Talk
Yeah I can just envision it now: ”$#%!, Halak is 9-0 with a .925 save %! Quick! Put this guy on waivers before Green puts him back out there! Hehehe, preferably before any player agents get wind of this and let’s any other agents know about this ingenious plan!! What do you mean we can’t place him on the waiver wire? Who gave him a NMC?! It’s almost as if his agents prevented us from pulling such an honourable move!” Pure troll is troll? -

There’s also Canadian market rebuilds (where season ticket holder’s typically demand their team either lower ticket prices - as if that ever happens in any significant way up here - or spend close to the cap) and American market rebuilds. When you’re the only ticket in town (as is the case here) with no other professional team to distract attention this is what we get. Beyond that, there are legitimate reasons why you need to be “competitive” when you’re getting a drafted new core’s feet wet during a rebuild; otherwise, you are left with a disgruntled potential Norris/Hart/Art Ross/Richard etc trophy winner that regresses because the rest of the team is uncompetitive as ______ and soon enough they will demand out and the rebuilding process starts all over again. Edit: There’s also a whole other level of psychological gamesmanship with public messaging up in Canada that owners generally force their hockey ops department’s to subject their fan bases to up here when it comes to rebuilds… -

You know what? This is actually a really valid point. Now that our beloved whale of a capitalist owner actually owns the farm team and stands to financially profit from it, perhaps he will lighten up on demanding playoff revenue year after year which certainly has an impact on his employee’s, Mr Benning, decision making with regards to trades involving draft picks and prospects. We have a pretty well informed fanbase (as knee jerk as it tends to be) that will gladly shell out $$$ to watch “future NHLers” that were actually drafted by the team rather than a Chicago Wolves type of scenario. -

Yes, I am certainly NOT saying we have a D-core structured on the same model as the 2011 Canucks. We’re nowhere near that completel in the building process and window of opportunity. We’re still evaluating what type of players Quinn Hughes, Jack Rathbone and Olli Juolevi ultimately are. In the meantime let’s get OEL to pass on some helpful experience and knowledge onto the young ones. Their development will determine what type of model we’re gonna go with (be it something like the 2011 Canucks or Tampa - with a left side of stars flanked by cheaper fill ins - or an entirely different model). -
[Discussion] Escalating market price for defencemen (Quinn Hughes)

Bridge deal. We need more time to truly evaluate his overall game to properly assess his overall monetary value within the context of a cap system -

[Signing] Canucks sign Danila Klimovich

Let’s get this kid to Abby. He’s already playing against men. I do not want to see him get squeezed in ice time like Podkolzin when Russian politics decided to put the screws to him. Keep him away from the K and away from the “too easy” league (at this point at least) in the Q… This way he can get to love the lower mainland and also be under the watchful eye of our player development. Drafting talent is only half the equation. There are plethora of drafted busts that wouldn’t have been busts if they had just been developed properly and something about this kid’s attitude tells me he is ready for professional league guidance. -

All four of those defensemen were paid roughly the same AAV. There were all seen as equal but ymmv and it appears as much but I can tell you that management viewed all four of those guys (five if you include Salo - which we should) as equal level talents. The analytics numbers may have skewed Hammer & Edlet slightly higher but that was not reflected in their compensation because all five understood they were all of equal caliber. The point remains, two high end middle pairings can be just as effective as one all star level pairing and one middling level middle pairing.
