  1. I wonder what the terms are... Edit: Wowzers 7yrs/$45.5m
  2. Thank God. I had this terrifying feeling Weisbrod was gonna talk Benning into going after this guy.
  3. The “details” of Holland and Treviling driving up Markstrom’s asks?
  4. Come on $6m signing bonus, $1m salary per year for each of the 7 years with a full NMC through all seven years. Come on Alberta! Who’s gonna win these sweepstakes?!
  5. We’re working on that by trying to get Deadmonton into the bidding war for this albatross!
  6. Hoping Markstrom holds out for 7-year/$49m deal somewhere
  7. Make ‘em retain 50% of the deal on the grounds that we’ve since committed salary elsewhere
  8. Move on to plan B. Time is a ticking...
  9. Some defencemen are better at avoiding injury than others. This is taking the entire pool of defencemen into consideration which is not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about an entirely different class of player with a different level of hockey IQ. It’s apples to oranges.
  10. I’m glad we still have Podz, Hogz and Demko but sad we don’t get to maximize Hughes’ and Pettersson’s ELCs as well as Horvat’s prime by adding a player of OEL’s caliber...
  11. Sure, if you’re comparing OEL to the entire pool of NHL players you’re going to get that 25-28 age range but half of those players are forwards that peak earlier than defencemen. I’m sure if you took out the forwards, and goaltenders, you’ll find defencemen peak a little later in the 28-32 age window. Now, take out the bottom tier defence men and look at the top tier defencemen and you’ll see that they tend to play well into their mid 30s. One need look much further than on our own team with what Edler is currently doing in his mid 30s. We’re not talking about scrub defencemen
  12. Krug is not a top defenceman. He’s a top offensive defenceman that has a deficiency defending his own end, IMO.
  13. There’s also a fairly significant amount of precedence in regards to having an elite backend, and a high octane top-six, compensating for a middling goaltender. Detroit with Osgood, Chicago with Niemi are the two that immediately come to mind.
  14. If it’s an either or situation, isn’t OEL the obvious choice?
  15. Didn’t Demko fall to the second round because he had some hip issues leading up to the draft? There is some risk there regarding whether or not his body will hold up with a heavy workload. Watching what happened to Cory Schneider when he tried to play through hip injuries was sad. Not to say the same thing will happen but it is something to consider as they choose between Markstrom and Demko. Edit: Someone beat me to that point.
  16. Well, the first buyout period ends tomorrow at 14:00pst so that’s actually a deadline of sorts in this mix. I’m expecting Baertschi to be bought out, if there’s a buyout at all, at which point Arizona will have to take on Eriksson’s $6m contract to make the cap numbers fit. I don’t see Benning buying out Sutter as he provides PK/“D-zone start shifts” so that leaves only Eriksson. I suppose they might want out from under Dvorak’s $$$ as well which may expand to Sutter’s cap hit going back the other way. I believe the actual dollar figures would be close to equal but Arizona gets out from underneath an additional $17.8m owed over the following four seasons after this year. Whether or not we should be adding Dvorak’s $4.45m cap hit for another four seasons after this one is an entirely different discussion than OEL’s but, admittedly, I know very little about Dvorak’s efficacy. Edit: I suppose Baertschi ending up on IR, a very likely scenario, also means that Arizona wouldn’t have to pay any actual dollars since Sven’s insurance would be covering that. So maybe Arizona’s owner(s) would actually prefer Baertschi over other cap dump options like Roussell/Beagle in which case the buyout deadline does serve a dual purpose for this deal to get done. Benning’s “soft deadline” so to speak...
  17. They grilled him on the OEL thing the other day (I can’t remember who it was) and there was nothing he could really say except, “We have trade talks with a lot of teams but whether anything comes of it we’ll just have to wait and see.” There’s really nothing he can say without it being considered tampering.
  18. I never said he was a bad player and yes, he was a 4th line centre this year in Washington slotted in behind Backstrom-Kuznetzov-Eller. Having said that, he and his agent likely asked for a trade because he was looking for a larger role and he is getting just that in Vegas so I can see why everyone is jumping on the “4th line centre” comment.
