Like oldnews laid it out, different players, different situations but both are filling critical roles in their respective teams’ bottom six at similar price points. Stephenson clearly has better foot speed and offensive acumen, Beagle has better face off skills and PK acumen. Both are necessary ingredients on a contending team.

My hope for Jake is to turn into a Blake Coleman type of player. Whether that happens in Vancouver or somewhere else, I’m not sure. He’s got a LONG way to go in the puck hound department.
-
Where exactly did I give you this false impression that I think Virtanen is some scrub that can’t play hockey and unworthy of a roster spot?
-
Maybe on some other team. I wouldn’t do that here. He hasn’t shown the proper level of professional effort to make a four year term a comfortable offer on management’s side
-
Two years/$5m or three years/$7.5m. I think those are both reasonable offers.
-
Yes, he can be traded before arbitration AFAIK, IIRC.

Can you imagine the vitriol on here if he wasn’t tendered a QO and Benning allowed him to go UFA?! The optics...

[Rumour] Tyler Toffoli to hit free agency

I don’t hate Boeser at all. Period. Full stop. -

It may have been a calculation that having Boeser & Toffoli on RW was just too much cement legs to have in a Cup contending top six. I’m disappointed but I’m not shocked that it appears that JB et co are choosing Boeser over Toffoli. Edit: If they can’t bring back Markstrom and go with a cheaper 1b to ride tandem with Demko, they may still come back around and offer Toffoli a deal. -
Exactly. This is an entertainment industry and trade speculation is a large part of that entertainment.

I just posted this but it’s addressed to the bolder part of your statement. The Friday deadline is fine. Benning can have all the paperwork on TT, CT & JM ready to go and in hand but also let those agents know whether he’s going to sign those papers, or not, prior to free agency opening on Friday. Meanwhile, the player agents will already have been working on their clients’ “plan B” options. That’s literally a player agent’s job.

It’s been a long while since I checked the CBA’s language but doesn’t full NMC technically negate any possibility of a buyout since the legal language means they can’t place the player on waivers even for the purposes of a buyout? I’m assuming there is an exemption built into the CBA that allows for the placing on waivers solely for the purposes of a buyout but am I mistaken in that assumption?

I think people became so hyper focused on the youth of Pettersson and Hughes that they lost sight of the fact that we’ve already “wasted” a couple years of Horvat’s prime and that Boeser has a $7.5m qualifying offer the year before both Horvat and JT Miller are up for unrestricted free agency. That’s a big swing year.

Fair enough, but if the ask was a 1st, blue chip prospect and a roster player (which is the historical going rate of defencemen of that calibre) then how is that not ______, Juolevi/Rathbone and Virtanen? If that blank is named Podkolzin or Hoglander I think we might be in a world of trouble considering that we don’t have a first round pick, or even a 2nd, this year to offset that loss of having a middle-six producing offensive numbers on an ELC when we’re cap ceiling’d out vying for a Cup.
-
JP Barry likely wouldn’t stand up publicly for Eriksson were he to enforce his NMC after all he’s done to try and help move him. I can’t see Barry being unable to talk Eriksson out of such a move, especially since Eriksson would likely pay less income tax in Arizona and therefore earn more than staying in Van.

Does anyone else look at his restrictive choices of just Boston and Vancouver and wonder if that was a strategic choice because he doesn’t really want to go anywhere? Neither of those teams have a 1st rounder to offer in this year’s draft and what does Arizona really need after the combine tampering penalty fiasco? 1st round picks. Even more so heading into a full on rebuild (which a trading of OEL would fully indicate is the direction). I don’t know, it’s just a thought.

It’s been reported that he outright said “No” to Edmonton and that he’s said “Yes” to Vancouver and Boston. Edit: Scratch my speculation Edit 2: I just remembered your opinions towards that particular player and had a LOL moment where I realized how you wouldn’t appreciate any quality player being tarnished with that brush. Cheers!
-
That’s what I’m hoping for. And Toffoli needs to be re-signed.
-
That’s pretty key. We can’t do this without relying on middle-six offensive production on their ELCs.
-
Which is more difficult to survive? Losing a top line forward or a top-pairing D? Do the Lightning win the Cup if it’s Hedman injured instead of Stamkos? If Hughes goes down our powerplay production dries up on the vine. Even though I’d prefer AP, I understand the rationale of acquiring OEL (Hughes’ frame vs Hedman’s frame) and I’m not opposed to it (as long as AP’s agent has given Benning the clear “not interested” sign).
-
The problem is that Horvat will be an UFA coming of multiple 60pt seasons, will have no shortage of interested parties and therefore his contract negotiating leverage will be high. We need to maximize the years where he’s being “underpaid” for his production not when he’s making market value or above.

Very true. They drafted Kucherov, Hedman, Palat, Johnson, etc. Their scouts do a great job of that and have been doing it with mid round finds.
