Definitely a lot better than I was expecting. I mean who seriously thought Quinn Hughes would be given 1st line minutes this early in the season...and dominating no less. I truthfully thought he could get 50 pts this season if all goes well but I was realistically expecting closer to 40. I hope he can continue to improve as the season goes on and doesn't go through a mid-season slump as he's never played a full 82 game season before. It'll be scary to think how good he could become in several years time if he continues to improve.

Surprisingly little attention by CDC when Rathbone gets 4 pts in a game. People are definitely still sleeping on him. Yes it's not regular season game but 4 pts is impressive regardless of position. Perhaps playing behind Adam Fox last year was a blessing in that he learnt a lot from him.

Someone obviously doesn't understand reading comprehension. Noone is panicking. Read my post again.

Actually I did, right at the very beginning of my sentence "Even though he hasn't played much..." sorry if I didn't write it out for you as 30 seconds. Regardless of whether he played 30 seconds or 1 minute in 3-5 games it still doesn't look good when you played 12 games and no points....several of which were against his peers playing big minutes. Lastly, this post was meant to be tongue in cheek.

Even though he hasn't played much damn his stat line looks gawd awful. 12 games played 8 KHL, 1 VHL, 3 Russia U20 and no points.

To be honest it's not like we really need to spend that many resources to scout the BCHL. It's not like there's a ton of players making it into the NHL and if there is someone that is worth scouting it's fairly well known in the scouting circle and they can pick and choose to see those games. Most BCHL players that don't get drafted and is worth pursuing end up going to college where they can be scouted more with one more year of development against older peers.

I know there is rarely anything positive about getting a minute of icetime so I'm going to try to look at this as a glass half full perspective. Most skilled players his age get high quality minutes because they are the best players on their team. However, the jump up to the next level is often a shock because they are not ready for the speed, the pace and the intensity. While I hope this minute a game of icetime doesn't last more than a few games it will motivate Podkolzin to give it his all every shift (even though he already does...but maybe there's an even higher gear that Podkolzin can attain). Arguably the problem with power forwards are that they are incredibly inconsistent in their first few years most likely because they don't put in that effort on a nightly basis. I'm hoping this will fire Podkolzin up and let him know at an early age what it will take to make not only the KHL but the NHL. Leave it all on the table, give it his all every shift offensively and defensively and his coach will have no option but to play him.

As much as I would love that I am not sure if we have the cap room after signing Pettersson and possibly bringing Tryamkin back into the fold. Definitely would need to rid ourselves of Tanev at the very least.

Haha it's actually kinda funny watching that highlight vid and seeing Podz not even having a single point for all his effort. However you can definitely tell he gains blue-line possession easily and develops lots of quality chances. I would say he needs to be more decisive with his passing and look for pass first opportunities as that will help open up some space for him rather than him doing it all on his own.

I personally love the D depth that we currently have but for sure there's room for improvement. The main question is whether we have another guy to fill in top pairing defenseman alongside Hughes. I think one of Woo or Juolevi could potentially be that guy but if not they are most certainly going to be 2nd pairing guys. Myers is still projected to be with us for the long haul and whether or not he is able to maintain 2nd pairing defenseman over the years is in question but for now he is either 1st pairing or 2nd pairing. I don't expect Tanev or Edler to be here long term so I won't really include them in our depth chart 2 years out. Stecher has been a really serviceable player for us that can move up and down the lineup but he is minimum 2nd pairing. I really think Rathbone can be a good solid player for us, whether that is on 2nd pairing or 3rd pairing d man but I definitely have a lot of faith that he will be an NHL player. The rest of our D depth can be serviceable 3rd pairing D men plus we have a glut of 2nd pairing d-men so I really am not too worried about our third pairing depth. Going back to the matter at hand, like I've already mentioned we need a top pairing D-man that can fill in once Tanev and Edler retire or move on. If Woo or Juolevi can't be that guy then we potentially have a problem down the road. Luckily we most likely won't have a problem for the next 2-3 years as Edler or Myers can likely take those minutes but we will need to address having another top pairing potential D-man in the system (I'm talking 1st round draft pick) probably next season.

Pretty sure it was Washington that he liked. The interviewer also asked if the team he liked was picking high and he said no...so must be Washington.

Saw the google translation and got a lot out of it already but I'll definitely be waiting for your translation as well. He sounds pretty humble and knows that hard work will earn him a spot on the KHL team vs being entitled to it. I was very surprised by the depth of this interview as they talked about a lot of topics including stuff that I normally wouldn't expect a player to divulge, particularly about friends/family asking for a loan.
-
I too agree with this pick. I definitely don't expect much from a 7th round pick if at all but he has sleeper pick potential if he can follow the footsteps of fellow Canucks Tyler Madden & Adam Gaudette. At least his point totals and early birthdate seem to fit in same mold, so as long as McDonough has the same work ethic as those other two he should be fine.

I'm starting to really like how this current team is starting to be assembled. We've got a good mix of high skilled guys and aggressive forechecking players built for the playoffs. While I don't think the Canucks will be strong favorites to make the playoffs I think they could do some damage once there, in a similar vein to how the LA Kings won the cup after barely making it in a few years back
-
Normally im not a huge fan of drafting overagers but he is the kind of pick I do like if they do go that route. The guy is still only 154 lb according to eliteprospects so lots of room to still fill out. Already producing at decent numbers with a lot of potential growth. Of he hits his ceiling I'm expecting a guy who can chip in for 25-40 points in his prime. I don't see crazy offensive upside but could be an effective player for us down the road

[Report] Vegas looking to trade Nikita Gusev
TGokou replied to Canucks_fo_life's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Oh man this would be a great pick up if the Canucks could afford the asking price which I'm not sure what it would be. Most likely Vegas wants picks going back based on their cap troubles. I doubt a second rounder by itself gets it done and a 1st might be slight over payment. I'm guessing a second and a third or 2 seconds gets it done? -
Based on the incoming and outgoing defenseman statistical productions, and assuming Hughes is good for 40 points which I think is reasonable +/- 10, we've added about 85 points on the backend and lost about 49 points on the backend for net total of 36 points. So this is pretty much in line with your prediction of 25-30 goals except this is ONLY from the backend not including our forward group. Realistically we should see anywhere from 30-50 goal improvement spread throughout the lineup assuming our forward group continues to take incremental steps in their production. Perhaps most importantly, we've lost the sieves in Pouliott, Gudbranson and Hutton and that will lower our GAA significantly. It's possible we see a 50-70 point swing between our GF/GA ratio from this year to last and that should firmly place us into playoff position.

The points are a key factor to having future NHL success particularly for players who are already overage to begin with. I mean if you want a 4th line grinder you can pick those up in free agency or retool a player you currently have in the system who might not make it as a top six forward. Of course it is only a statistical model. Not saying this player can't be a player some day but definitely the offensive upside will be severely limited. I will however admit it's own shortcomings considering I don't watch these players play and players like Tyler Madden and Adam Gaudette who didn't have a very good statistical draft season AND was an early birthday would've precluded them from being drafted in their respective rounds by my standards so my opinion obviously means nothing.
-
I am not a fan of overagers either. That said I don't mind if the statistical production warrants it. In this case a below ppg player in his D+1 eligible year does not really warrant a pick. I'd like to see minimum 1.2-1.5 ppg for CHL league in order to make me consider drafting a player, even if it's later rounds. Obviously hope he proves me wrong but I seriously doubt this guy will ever be a player.

I do wonder if he would be better suited to Pettersson's line or Horvats? Put him with Pettersson and you have a bulldog who will fight to win all puck battles in the corners and dig the puck out for Boeser and Pettersson in the slot. Alternatively he can bulldoze his way to the net, creating rebounds for Boeser or Pettersson to finish. It is a very complimentary skillset for those two players. On the other hand, putting him with Horvat you have a super responsible line that if paired with another high energy winger (Virtanen?) would create havoc all over the ice. Particularly in the playoffs teams would have to put out their best D against Pettersson but if they are ever stuck out there against Horvat - Podkolzin they could really wear them down and score at the same time.
-
Yes same here. He was my go to pick at 10 and it's kinda cool to see your selection validated by an excellent organization. I actually believed his FLOOR was 1st pair shut down D and his ceiling would be 40-50 point all situations D man. I like this pick a lot.

NHL Draft Preview: Chris MacDonald (Canucks Amateur Scout) Interview!
TGokou replied to snizzle_'s topic in Canucks Talk
Wow thanks for this podcast! Very insightful and loved all his thoughts on drafting. -
Seider has moved up considerably from low 20s to 15 which is an average so some teams probably have him as high as 10 and others as low as 20. Also interesting there is a run of 5 defensemen in a row which means they are interchangeable based on what a team believes. Assuming Mckenzies rankings are the most accurate in terms of a mock draft my choices would be as follows 1st - Zegras/Seider/Caufield 2nd - Nicholas Robertson -> rated much higher on most scouting services and in my opinion is gonna be a Brendan Gallagher mold 3rd - Pavel Dorofeyev -> would be criminal to not pick him up here if he is still available ..a second round talent for sure
