Does anyone else think Hughes is better than they were expecting?

I knew he was a great skater, could see he could be elusive and slippery with the puck, he's obviously smart, but I had no idea how good he would be as a rookie in the NHL. The kid is schooling veterans out there, every shift it seems he's got a new trick or a new move that fools opponents. I find Hughes and Pettersson to be on another level than most other players. They both have elite awareness and vision. Pettersson is very skilled offensively, but yet he's damn good defensively too. Same with Hughes, he's good defensively, but provides such unique offense most NHL Dmen are unable to pull off. With these two, there is no ceiling, so the sky is the limit.

Definitely a lot better than I was expecting. I mean who seriously thought Quinn Hughes would be given 1st line minutes this early in the season...and dominating no less. I truthfully thought he could get 50 pts this season if all goes well but I was realistically expecting closer to 40. I hope he can continue to improve as the season goes on and doesn't go through a mid-season slump as he's never played a full 82 game season before. It'll be scary to think how good he could become in several years time if he continues to improve.

    That is ridiculous.

You actually believe that it looks bad if a player plays for 30 seconds in a game and has no points? Haha....ok.  :picard:

Keep on panicking for no reason pal.  :frantic:

Someone obviously doesn't understand reading comprehension. Noone is panicking. Read my post again.

Sorry pal but that is one horrible post. Don't bother putting any info in there about him playing for 30 seconds in some of those games......come on!!

    :picard:

Actually I did, right at the very beginning of my sentence "Even though he hasn't played much..." sorry if I didn't write it out for you as 30 seconds. Regardless of whether he played 30 seconds or 1 minute in 3-5 games it still doesn't look good when you played 12 games and no points....several of which were against his peers playing big minutes. Lastly, this post was meant to be tongue in cheek.

  4. To be honest it's not like we really need to spend that many resources to scout the BCHL. It's not like there's a ton of players making it into the NHL and if there is someone that is worth scouting it's fairly well known in the scouting circle and they can pick and choose to see those games. Most BCHL players that don't get drafted and is worth pursuing end up going to college where they can be scouted more with one more year of development against older peers.

I don't like that his coach isn't playing him regularly, but also keeps Podkolzin hungry and on his toes, but downside is he loses ground in development and confidence building.  Should be interesting how this unfolds.

I know there is rarely anything positive about getting a minute of icetime so I'm going to try to look at this as a glass half full perspective. Most skilled players his age get high quality minutes because they are the best players on their team. However, the jump up to the next level is often a shock because they are not ready for the speed, the pace and the intensity. While I hope this minute a game of icetime doesn't last more than a few games it will motivate Podkolzin to give it his all every shift (even though he already does...but maybe there's an even higher gear that Podkolzin can attain). Arguably the problem with power forwards are that they are incredibly inconsistent in their first few years most likely because they don't put in that effort on a nightly basis. I'm hoping this will fire Podkolzin up and let him know at an early age what it will take to make not only the KHL but the NHL. Leave it all on the table, give it his all every shift offensively and defensively and his coach will have no option but to play him.

There was a lot of talk at the draft this year that Barrie may want to come home next summer.

I don't know if it would be possible cap wise as we have a lot of guys that will be getting big paydays. But if we did get Barrie that would be crazy. Him and Hughes as the O guys with Woo and Tryamkin as the big guys. And OJ.....and a bunch of other possibilities like you have mentioned.

As much as I would love that I am not sure if we have the cap room after signing Pettersson and possibly bringing Tryamkin back into the fold. Definitely would need to rid ourselves of Tanev at the very least.

  7. Haha it's actually kinda funny watching that highlight vid and seeing Podz not even having a single point for all his effort. However you can definitely tell he gains blue-line possession easily and develops lots of quality chances. I would say he needs to be more decisive with his passing and look for pass first opportunities as that will help open up some space for him rather than him doing it all on his own.

  8. I personally love the D depth that we currently have but for sure there's room for improvement. The main question is whether we have another guy to fill in top pairing defenseman alongside Hughes. I think one of Woo or Juolevi could potentially be that guy but if not they are most certainly going to be 2nd pairing guys. Myers is still projected to be with us for the long haul and whether or not he is able to maintain 2nd pairing defenseman over the years is in question but for now he is either 1st pairing or 2nd pairing. I don't expect Tanev or Edler to be here long term so I won't really include them in our depth chart 2 years out. Stecher has been a really serviceable player for us that can move up and down the lineup but he is minimum 2nd pairing. I really think Rathbone can be a good solid player for us, whether that is on 2nd pairing or 3rd pairing d man but I definitely have a lot of faith that he will be an NHL player. The rest of our D depth can be serviceable 3rd pairing D men plus we have a glut of 2nd pairing d-men so I really am not too worried about our third pairing depth.

Going back to the matter at hand, like I've already mentioned we need a top pairing D-man that can fill in once Tanev and Edler retire or move on. If Woo or Juolevi can't be that guy then we potentially have a problem down the road. Luckily we most likely won't have a problem for the next 2-3 years as Edler or Myers can likely take those minutes but we will need to address having another top pairing potential D-man in the system (I'm talking 1st round draft pick) probably next season.

So he had 4 teams he liked, one of whom he likes on a personal level...hmmm, do any of the remaining teams have a monstrous Russian winger who has been somewhat prolific through Pod’s development years?

These young players are always so mysterious.

Pretty sure it was Washington that he liked. The interviewer also asked if the team he liked was picking high and he said no...so must be Washington.

Finally, there is large and very interesting interview with Podkolzin about Vancouver, NHL draft, world junior championship, SKA... I have been waiting for such interview since June:

    https://www.sport-express.ru/hockey/khl/reviews/bolshoe-intervyu-novogo-forvarda-talanta-vasiliya-podkolzina-o-drafte-nhl-o-vankuvere-yuniorke-ska-i-mchm-1574665/

I will try to translate this interview, this would take some time, Vasily uses a lot of natural Russian idioms that are not easy to paraphrase into English... Man, you are gonna love this interview, it answers so many questions about Podkolzin.

Saw the google translation and got a lot out of it already but I'll definitely be waiting for your translation as well. He sounds pretty humble and knows that hard work will earn him a spot on the KHL team vs being entitled to it. I was very surprised by the depth of this interview as they talked about a lot of topics including stuff that I normally wouldn't expect a player to divulge, particularly about friends/family asking for a loan.

I think people are sleeping a bit on Aidan McDonough. I ran his numbers through my evaluation tool and his value even as an overager is still around a late 3rd early 4th compared to last year.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him turn out better than former teammate at Thayer and first round pick Jay O'Brien. Yes that is a low bar, but the pick value comparison is a nice piece of work from Judd.

He was rated #89 by Hockey Prospect for the 2018 draft last year, and he got better this year as a USHL rookie.

He scored over a point per game in the playoffs for Cedar Rapids this year too.

I too agree with this pick. I definitely don't expect much from a 7th round pick if at all but he has sleeper pick potential if he can follow the footsteps of fellow Canucks Tyler Madden & Adam Gaudette. At least his point totals and early birthdate seem to fit in same mold, so as long as McDonough has the same work ethic as those other two he should be fine.

Yes exactly. EP40 is type of player who wins Hart, Art Ross, Lindsay trophies.

Pod is a lion in the jungle.  Relentless puck pursuit and forecheck. High rev motor.  Just keeps going and going.

He's the type you win with in playoffs

I can see him winning the Conn Smythe over those regular season trophies.

I'm starting to really like how this current team is starting to be assembled. We've got a good mix of high skilled guys and aggressive forechecking players built for the playoffs. While I don't think the Canucks will be strong favorites to make the playoffs I think they could do some damage once there, in a similar vein to how the LA Kings won the cup after barely making it in a few years back

    Thanks @SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME for the highlights!

I'm going to just jot your name down in Plasek's file for future reference.  We will indubitably have fans expecting him to become a 2nd coming of Milan Hejduk as a result of your post, so we will have to revisit this in a couple of years when fans are asking what happened.  :)

Normally im not a huge fan of drafting overagers but he is the kind of pick I do like if they do go that route. The guy is still only 154 lb according to eliteprospects so lots of room to still fill out. Already producing at decent numbers with a lot of potential growth. Of he hits his ceiling I'm expecting a guy who can chip in for 25-40 points in his prime. I don't see crazy offensive upside but could be an effective player for us down the road

This seems like a risk worth taking depending on the trade price.

If his rumoured 2 years at 4 mill is true that could also be good value if it pans out.

I don't think we should be giving up prime assets for this guy though as he is unproven in the NHL at this point.

Some risk involved so it really depends on the asking price from Vegas.

I'd give up a goldobin and a second

Last year we were five wins away from a playoff spot.  That’s it.  Ten wins would probably put us into the top 2 maybe 3 in our division..really that means if we were .500 during that losing streak (which also affected our GAA) we would have made the show.  That said the West lost points against the East last year, making it easier for teams to get in.   Ten wins would definitely get us there and more...we’d be around a 100 point team.   Think we just added 25-30 goals between getting better and our core taking steps. Which would put us close to 250...  can’t imagine what a year of Hughes, Myers and Benn will do instead of Poopoo, Guddy/Schenn and Hutton.  Guessing at least 25-30 goals less too.   Definitely puts us into the playoff hunt.

Based on the incoming and outgoing defenseman statistical productions, and assuming Hughes is good for 40 points which I think is reasonable +/- 10, we've added about 85 points on the backend and lost about 49 points on the backend for net total of 36 points. So this is pretty much in line with your prediction of 25-30 goals except this is ONLY from the backend not including our forward group. Realistically we should see anywhere from 30-50 goal improvement spread throughout the lineup assuming our forward group continues to take incremental steps in their production. Perhaps most importantly, we've lost the sieves in Pouliott, Gudbranson and Hutton and that will lower our GAA significantly. It's possible we see a 50-70 point swing between our GF/GA ratio from this year to last and that should firmly place us into playoff position.

Why a fixation on points?    That is far from the only discriminator on player potential.   Further, what style did his team play?   What role was he given?   Was the supporting cast good?   There are some CHL point producing phenoms who never played a minute in NHL and others who didn't light it up who went on to massive impacts in the NHL.   Every player is unique.

The points are a key factor to having future NHL success particularly for players who are already overage to begin with. I mean if you want a 4th line grinder you can pick those up in free agency or retool a player you currently have in the system who might not make it as a top six forward. Of course it is only a statistical model. Not saying this player can't be a player some day but definitely the offensive upside will be severely limited. I will however admit it's own shortcomings considering I don't watch these players play and players like Tyler Madden and Adam Gaudette who didn't have a very good statistical draft season AND was an early birthday would've precluded them from being drafted in their respective rounds by my standards so my opinion obviously means nothing.

Why not?   What on earth does that have to do with anything?   These are not robots - they develop on different trajectories.

I am not a fan of overagers either. That said I don't mind if the statistical production warrants it. In this case a below ppg player in his D+1 eligible year does not really warrant a pick. I'd like to see minimum 1.2-1.5 ppg for CHL league in order to make me consider drafting a player, even if it's later rounds. Obviously hope he proves me wrong but I seriously doubt this guy will ever be a player.

Podkolzin - Bo would be a nasty pairing. Offensively and defensively. Can totally see these two shutting down star players.

I do wonder if he would be better suited to Pettersson's line or Horvats? Put him with Pettersson and you have a bulldog who will fight to win all puck battles in the corners and dig the puck out for Boeser and Pettersson in the slot. Alternatively he can bulldoze his way to the net, creating rebounds for Boeser or Pettersson to finish. It is a very complimentary skillset for those two players. On the other hand, putting him with Horvat you have a super responsible line that if paired with another high energy winger (Virtanen?) would create havoc all over the ice. Particularly in the playoffs teams would have to put out their best D against Pettersson but if they are ever stuck out there against Horvat - Podkolzin they could really wear them down and score at the same time.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Seider ends up being the best D of this class. Stevie Y. is a good GM and has an eye for talent. Sneaky as Hell too.

Yes same here. He was my go to pick at 10 and it's kinda cool to see your selection validated by an excellent organization. I actually believed his FLOOR was 1st pair shut down D and his ceiling would be 40-50 point all situations D man. I like this pick a lot.

    Hey Everyone,

It's been awhile since I've posted but thought I'd share with the community.

I got the chance to talk to Chris MacDonald, who's been an Amateur Scout for the Canucks for the last 6 years, and was willing to let us record him for the Podcast I started with some friends. Would love feedback, maybe have him on after the draft to get him to break down the picks. Would love to field questions from the community. It's an interesting time for this organization, and wanted to bring the analyst, media, fan perspective and thought we got some cool answers/stories from Chris. I think everyone will enjoy the Petey story. We'll be cutting the video to do 1 per question because we realized how long it the original plays.

    Cheers Everyone

Wow thanks for this podcast! Very insightful and loved all his thoughts on drafting.

Bob McKenzie's final consensus draft rankings are out.

Seider has moved up considerably from low 20s to 15 which is an average so some teams probably have him as high as 10 and others as low as 20. Also interesting there is a run of 5 defensemen in a row which means they are interchangeable based on what a team believes.

Assuming Mckenzies rankings are the most accurate in terms of a mock draft my choices would be as follows

    1st - Zegras/Seider/Caufield

2nd - Nicholas Robertson -> rated much higher on most scouting services and in my opinion is gonna be a Brendan Gallagher mold

3rd - Pavel Dorofeyev -> would be criminal to not pick him up here if he is still available ..a second round talent for sure
