...and you're welcome to that opinion. Just as those of us who don't share it are welcome to ours. Yet for some reason, you deem it necessary to throw out demeaning comments like "stroking your morale (sic) ego"...and "lol, you obviously ain't Chinese or been to China". As if having never been to a country means that one's opinion of it's actions are somehow invalid....

Exactly. If we just look the other way and act as if they weren't committing genocide, (to say nothing of kidnapping two of our citizens) and go to the Olympics as if all is well, it sends the message that we're okay with those actions.... It would suck for those athletes who's life revolves around four years of training, just to compete in the games, but as has already been stated, doing the right thing is often hard... I also disagree with the opinion that it wouldn't cause the CCP to lose face, just as I disagree that they wouldn't care. Just look at the angry reactions we already see for any slight, real or perceived.

(we'd already taken our high hells off...feet were killing us) Freudian slip....

Brian May is my hero. I'm a huge fan of the band in general, but you just can't beat the combo of a great guitar player, who's also a rocket scientist....

To get away from the disappointment of Covid protocols and cancelled games, here is an article I came across on SNET about Connor Garland. It's a bit of a long read, so I'm only posting the link. Enjoy: https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/longform/inside-conor-garlands-fearless-and-endearing-approach-to-the-game/

[Official] Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball thread
RUPERTKBD replied to The Stork's topic in Off-Topic General
I don't know much about Nick Ashbourne, but I have to smh a bit when a sportswriter refers to a situation as both "dire" and "sub-optimal", in the same paragraph.... FTR, I'd love to see and upgrade at 3rd or 2nd (and I'm still hoping to see a deal for Ramirez once the lockout ends) but if the Jays had to start the season with the lineup they have today, I'd still be more concerned about starting pitching than I would about offense.... -
Or teenage girls who happen to be climate activists....

I watched one of those Astronomy docs yesterday (not Brian Cox. The one where they have a half dozen physicists weighing in) and TBH is was a bit disheartening.... The subject was the search for intelligent civilizations in the galaxy/universe. Drake's equation came up often and although 10,000 intelligent civilizations in our galaxy seems promising, they then started running through all the reasons we're never likely to contact, or be contacted by one.... For the most part, the main reason is the distance between stars. I won't get into it here. It's fairly obvious and anyone who wants to see it should be able to find it. What I learned from the show (that I didn't know before) concerns the expansion of the universe and it speaks to the "faster than light" question. Apparently, Expansion can happen at speeds that exceed C. (as it must have right after the big bang) I won't get into the details, because they're a bit difficult to wrap your head around, but according to what they were saying, the further away for us it is, the faster space expands. As I understood it. it's relative, meaning that something twice as far away would be receding twice as fast. So fast, apparently, that a celestial object sufficiently distant from us, could be moving away from us at faster than light speed. The way it was explained, if mankind somehow managed to achieve light speed travel and set off to travel to one of these distant objects, we would never get there, not even after billions of years of travel.... As Ilya Bryzgalov would say, "The Universe is humongous big".....and it's getting bigger....

Paul Maurice resigns as Jets head coach

My first inclination was that hiring a guy famous for his F-Bombs seems to be working in Vancity, so maybe Torts is the guy.... ....but seriously, I think a return to Winnipeg by AV makes a lot of sense.... -
You know, it's funny....I remember back in the early days of the Trump thread, a lot of his supporters losing their sh!t because someone mentioned that Barron might have to change his name, or something along those lines....it was comment after comment of "how dare you attack a child!", etc. etc (even though the real target of the "attack" was his father)... Yet so many of those same outraged posters seem to have no problem whatsoever attacking a young girl who just wants to do something to protect the planet that she has to live on for another 60 or 70 years....a planet that her attackers don't seem to GAF about, because they've got maybe 20 years left on it and therefore won't have deal with the consequences of CC.... Just pointing out the "hypocrisy".....

It's really crude (as one might expect from Silverman and Rogen) and of course, it's creating a bunch of controversy.... Apparently they originally released a trailer on Youtube (before the first episode aired) and the comments section was littered with anti-Semitism. (because both stars are Jewish, I suppose) Immediately after, the ratings began to tank, prompting Rogen to say that they had been tanked by "White supremacists", which of course and resulted in a lot of criticism for "wokeness", etc... In fact, even without the Rogen comment, there are a lot of "woke" criticisms. Misogyny is a main thread in the series, as Silverman's character is up against the "old boys club" mentality, while trying to become Santa's successor...... To be sure, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, (especially if you're religious, or see the idea of Christmas as sacrosanct) but for the "Bad Santa" crowd, I'd say it's worth a look....

On the topic at hand, I think it's important to note that no-one is advocating moving away from petroleum products altogether. It's more a case of wanting to move away from burning fossil fuels to produce heat and electricity... This mantra of "no more cell phones and computers" is just an attempt to throw shade at the real goal of cutting back on emissions.

There's a new adult cartoon called Santa Inc on HBO. On one of the episodes they introduce an angry elf who is obviously patterned on Greta. Apparently it's rated very poorly, but I think it's pretty funny. Hard to go too far wrong with Sarah Silverman and Seth Rogen as the two main characters.

It is on the Island....they just make things up as they go over there....

Expansion is one of those things that I've never had properly explained to me.... If you take the estimated size of the Universe, (Between 70 and 80 billion Light Years across, according to what I've read) it doesn't actually make sense. The Big Bang happened just under 14 billion years ago, so if space expanded at the speed of light (which we're told is the cosmic speed limit) then the Universe should be less than 28 billion Light Years across.... Somehow space expanded at a far greater speed (almost triple C) just after the Big Bang, but it's never been clear to me how this is possible....

They did. That's why I left it out.... Of course, they didn't have any "Stable Genius" in office to tell them to take it, so there's that.....
