  1. Agreed. I was a bit worried when TP was let go, but I figured they'd find someone to fill that hole. I'd really just like to see someone with a little more height (or hops) at the back. Last night, Kamara was responsible for almost as many clearances as Waston. Maybe the 'Caps can work something out with Stoke City for Peter Crouch...
  2. Yep. This is more than just a loss for the 'Skins, it's a loss for football in general and those of us who love to watch the great players do their thing. (Except Brady, of course)
  3. Yeah, this is a real head scratcher... ...I wonder if DC makes big money? Otherwise, I don't get this move at all....
  4. Huge win in Portland last night. Despite not getting much help from the officials, the 'Caps held on for a 2-1 victory. It was the first lost for the Timbers in 16 fixtures. Felipe and Ghazal were excellent in midfield, time and again intercepting balls before the Timbers could go on the attack. Still some defensive issues. I still think Waston needs some help in the back. Preferably someone who's good in the air. The good news is that Montreal scored in the second half to draw RSL, leaving Vancouver 2 pts out of a playoff spot. In fact, every team ahead of the Whitecaps is the West, either drew or lost, with the exception of Sporting KC, who beat LA FC, currently three point ahead of the 'Caps. Another tough match-up next Saturday, with NY Red Bulls visiting BC Place.
  5. It isn't just in the states and Europe that we see racism rearing it's ugly head.....it's alive and well here in Canada as well: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/airbnb-host-turns-ontario-student-away-because-his-friend-is-black/ar-BBLLOnB?li=AAggFp5 It sounds like Airbnb did the right thing and dumped this woman, but what a sad state of affairs....
  6. I'm tired of seeing the same recycled coaches in the CFL. It's usually someone whom the game has passed by, (like Wally) or a former player with limited coaching experience. The other option seems to be coaches from US colleges, who struggle (at first, at least) to adapt to the Canadian game. My question is: Why not a Canadian university HC? Glen Constantin of Laval has done nothing but win for the better part of a decade, but I can't recall ever hearing him (or any other CIAU coach) getting consideration for a CFL job.
  7. Blondell, I tend to agree with, but Ghazal and Juarez aren't forwards, so their playing time isn't affecting Hurtado's at all. It's guys like Reyna and Kamara (and very occasionally, Ibini) who's playing time keeps Hurtado on the bench.
  8. Hard to believe that this sort of thing happens in any country, let alone a first world country: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/new-mexico-compound-11-emaciated-children-rescued/ar-BBLwzKB?li=AAggNb9
  9. Yeah, I tuned in late and kept looking for him sprinting down the sideline as usual. For a while I didn't even think he was in the lineup.
  10. Just started to read a book on anti-gravity..... ....I can't put it down....
  11. ...and some good news from China: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/chinese-toddler-survives-17-storey-fall/ar-BBLmSMK?li=AAggNb9 I don't believe in miracles, but that is pretty miraculous.... Also, a bit off topic, but I'm wondering if in 70 years or so, she'll have to change her name to Old Yueyue....
  12. See here in Canada, we do things a bit differently.... ....I give you the Canadian version of "going postal": https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/canada-post-employee-charged-in-erratic-naked-driving-spree-in-calgary/ar-BBLkF9a?li=AAggNb9
  13. I think I'm as disappointed in the injury to LG jr as I am anything else. https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-gurriel-jr-expected-weeks/ Gurriel's streak of consecutive multi-hit games was one of the few things left to cheer for when watching a game. With momentum and repetition being such a big part of what makes a hitter successful, it's long odds that he'll be able to carry that streak any further when he rejoins the club. Only two more games to tie a 95 year old record....
  14. So whenever you're feeling bad about the state of the Jays, you can just imagine being a Mets fan after the beatdown they suffered at the hands of the Nats last night. Final score was 25-4 and here are a couple of the better post game comments: "Bono, Jimmy Carter, Amnesty International, Oprah & Bishop Tutu call on the UN to intervene in the senseless slaughter of Mets" "Should be noted that Jose Reyes says he is not available to pitch tomorrow. So there's that going for the Mets right now."
  15. Loup and Axford moved by the Jays today. I have to confess I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't see even more movement, but Shatkins did a decent job. In other news, JA Happ apparently has contracted Hand-Foot and Mouth disease. https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/yankees-j-happ-contracts-hand-foot-mouth-disease/ I didn't even know this was a thing....I've heard of Foot-in-Mouth disease....It's something Donald Trump has had for years....
  16. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Jays have traded Roberto Osuna to the Astros. No word on what is coming back at this point. https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/report-blue-jays-trade-roberto-osuna-astros/
  17. That was a sick performance from Phonsie last night. Reyna had an excellent game as well.... ...defending is still an issue though. DeJong got burned on the second Minny goal and Teibert was out-jumped on the first. I know management is thinking Can-con with these two, but I think KW needs some more help back there...
  18. Not sure if anyone is watching the Jays - Chi-Sox tonight, but I'm re-iterating my statement of a couple of years ago that CB Bucknor is one of the worst umpires in baseball. In this case, it's the Jays getting the benefit of most of the calls, but what really stands out to me is the strike zone. I have no idea how batters can tell what they should be swinging at...
  19. I agree. But I also think there's no real reason to spend until those two (along with Gurriel, Hernanadez and maybe Grichuk) are the core of the team.
  20. In high school we used to call it "The Old Goat in the Boat".... Currently reading the third installment of NK Jemison's "The Broken Earth" trilogy. Took a while to get into, but now I'm hooked.
  21. I remember watching a Doc on MLB several years ago and the reporter basically made the case that teams with their own TV deals (Yankees with YES and Red Sox with NESN) don't have to worry all that much about the luxury tax. The example used was the Yankees and the reporter basically made the case that the increased revenue generated by big name signings (TV subscriptions, merchandising, etc) more than offset the actual cost of signing a big name FA. (I could be wrong, but I believe the case he was looking at was Mark Texeira) Although the Jays have a similar deal with Rogers, it pales in comparison to what the Yankees, Bosox and Dodgers bring in with their TV contracts. It's always going to be tough to compete with their buying power. That being said, both of the AL East frontrunners have gotten to where they are with drafting and player development. Guys like Betts, Judge, Benintendi and Austin are all home grown. It puts both teams in a position to sign one or two big name free agents to augment their lineups, instead of building the bulk of their teams through free agent signings. Stanton in NY and Martinez in Boston have both been good for their respective teams, but they're pieces of the puzzle, rather than the cornerstones of the franchises.
  22. Gotta say, I agree with Isner....6 hours is far too long for a Match. Time to allow tiebreakers in the 5th set...
  23. They're going to promote him to Triple A, as soon as he comes off the DL. I don't think you'll see him with the Jays until rosters are expanded in September.
  24. I've antagonized a few of the religious CDCers on these boards over the years....this story is one of the reasons that I do so: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/faith-healer-parents-plead-guilty-in-the-death-of-baby-after-they-chose-prayer-over-medical-help/ar-AAzQ0Ws?li=AAggNb9
