  1. The Thai cave saga is not over yet.... https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/05/asia/thai-cave-diver-intl/index.html Sad news....hopefully they can figure something out soon...
  2. Yeah, saw that this morning. I'm personally anti Death penalty, but the world is probably better off without these guys. I think I knew that Japan had Capital punishment, it's just that they don't use it often.
  3. On another note, Joey Bats returns to TO tonight with the Mets. I'm expecting a lengthy ovation for his first AB...
  4. I tend to take a bit more of an optimistic approach. Even if the Jays were a + .500 team, they wouldn't have a chance against the Yankees or Red Sox. They might have an outside shot at a WC slot, but it would almost certainly be one and done against any of the big 4 AL teams (Houston and Cleveland being the other two) The Jays need a full on rebuild and being somewhat competitive might have caused them to be buyers at the deadline. Being where they are in the standings is confirmation that the lineup as it looks now, is basically done as a contender. If there's a market for any of their veterans, they should move them. I think they could see excellent return for Happ and Estrada and with a little luck, (or injuries on other rosters) there might be a market for guys like Pillar, Martin and Smoak. It's time to follow the Houston playbook and two bad years in a row is the impetus to get it started.
  5. BTW: I heard on Cuomo last night that those kids in Thailand are stuck in that cave for a while yet. The caves are flooded and they have to teach the kids to dive in muddy water where visibility is basically zero. According to a former Navy Seal that CC interviewed, it's extremely dangerous for an experienced diver, let alone a neophyte. Right now there in the process of bringing 4 months worth of food into the cave, while the kids go through the learning process.
  6. It's another one of those debates that we have here in society: When does trophy hunting become "conservation"? https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/american-hunter-defends-black-giraffe-trophy-kill-after-images-posing-with-corpse-spark-outrage/ar-AAzwjPG?li=AAggNb9 Personally, I doubt this had anything to do with "prayers being answered", or being "blessed", (I don't believe in God, but if I did, I doubt that he'd sanction the killing of one of his creatures, just for the sake of mounting it's head on a wall and I definitely believe he wouldn't help in the effort) Also, I really have to wonder how the killing of a rare animal can be considered "conservation". I'm sure one of out local hunting aficionados will be along shortly to explain. And giraffe "meat"? Really? I find that hard to swallow...
  7. So I came across a story that I wanted to post, but it didn't really belong in any of the current threads and I didn't think it really needed it's own. So I created this thread as a repository for notable world events that don't need an entire thread dedicated to them. I wanted to start it off with some good news for a change and this is great news coming from Thailand: https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/02/asia/thai-cave-rescue-intl/index.html I had been following this story for the past week and a bit, and I have to say that as time went on, I was becoming less optimistic. I was very happy to see this headline this morning. World Cup Football on the TV and good news about another soccer team in the headlines. Pretty good way to start a holiday Monday...
  8. The season, and quite possibly his career, according to Dave Naylor. FTR: Naylor doesn't think Toronto would trade for Manziel. Trestman is pretty old school and the expectation is that he'll go with the guy he signed as an insurance policy for the event that Ray retired in the off-season. He isn't a big fan of the sideshow athlete....
  9. Pleasantly surprised to see the Ti-Cats knock off the Eskies last night. Masoli looked very good, but Deadmonton's D looked lost out there...
  10. Gotta say....I was pretty impressed by the starts that both JJ's had. Jennings looked pretty good and Jackson's offense had some nice wrinkles. Loved the use of motion and giving Jennings several options on plays. This is how you utilize a QB who can run.
  11. Makes a ton of sense.....at the beginning of the year, anyway.... Stro being a New Yorker....but there's no way the Yanks give us much, unless he can revert to form after coming off the DL. I think we'd need to see a half dozen or so quality starts and an ERA in the mid 3's for Cashman to consider it.
  12. Do the Lakers have enough Balls to make those deals....?
  13. I think I offered Reggie that deal in the off-season. He took it right away, so now I think he has to add....
  14. exactly my point. only to be met with a strawman....
  15. ***sigh*** It's fine to defend your own city kos, but that comment just shows how little you know about this area of the world...
  16. Doesn't have quite the same level of panache when you just post a link, g......
  17. No windows on that side of the house. Besides, these are really small kids. Getting it out of the infield is an accomplishment. The bigger kids are playing at the new park down by the civic center.
  18. Never got all that deep, but a lot of kids walk that sidewalk in front of my place on their way to the little league park and I didn't want to risk it turning to ice....
  19. I don't know if you caught it or not, but there was an important clip that the showrunners didn't convey very well: All throughout the books, we are told that when visiting the hall of another house, it's important that you are given bread and salt. This is an indication that you are a guest in their house and that no harm shall befall you while there. Throughout Westeros, causing harm to a guest is considered one of the most unforgivable transgressions there is. That's why the clip that showed Robb and Catelyn being offered bread and salt was so important.
  20. I'll weigh in on the "best place to live" debate... As a preface, I'll start by saying that I spent the decade of the 80's traveling western Canada with various rock bands. (I know I've brought this up before, but in case some didn't know...) I've been pretty much everywhere, from Yellowknife, to the US border in Manitoba, to Port Hardy on the Island and down to Victoria and every town big enough to have bar with live music, in between. Although I'm happy where I am, (Shoveled snow twice this year, while our closest neighbors an hour and a half away were doing it twice daily for over a month) I always said that if money were no object, I'd want to live somewhere around Parksville or Qualicum.
  21. Pellets? I don't think so...Light crude? For sure. That was my suggestion.
  22. True. But does the volume dictate that a new pipeline is needed to handle the capacity required? Now that we're all owners of the existing pipeline, I think everyone would like to see it brought up to current safety standards and then run as efficiently as possible.
  23. Please tell me that all three governments are looking into this seriously.... ....because something tells me that it's not the case....
