  1. Gotta disagree, Reg. I've played for a lot of years and watching that replay several times, Austin definitely spiked Holt intentionally. It was a cheap shot and I don't think Kelly had any choice but to plunk him. He would have lost a lot of respect in his own clubhouse had he not done so. That being said, I don't think the Yankees hit Hanley on purpose. That looked like an inside fastball that rode in further than the pitcher wanted. Probably a 4 seamer.
  2. Nothing really to do with the pipeline, but positive news from the oilsands, nonetheless: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/vanadium-shell-oilsands-renewables-1.4608208
  3. So much for the "maleness" that the hag on twitter was whingeing about... RIP, Dayna....
  4. Currently reading Death's End, the third installment of the Three Body Problem trilogy by Cixin Liu. Liu writes in Mandarin, so all three novels have been translated, but the imagination of this man is amazing. If you're a hard SF fan, I highly recommend. Fair warning though: Liu is one of those writers who bounces around time lines and finishes chapters cryptically, so you spend 3/4 of the book wondering where the narrative is going, only to have it all tied together at the end. It's one of those trilogies that takes a while to get into, but once you're in, you're hooked. https://www.lrb.co.uk/v40/n03/nick-richardson/even-what-doesnt-happen-is-epic
  5. The Liberals' support in BC is limited to a few districts in the lower mainland and even less in Alberta. (Just a couple around Calgary) My guess is that they believe they have nothing to lose and everything to gain by supporting this pipeline.
  6. There was also the fact that the entire team dyed their hair blonde...
  7. More than just one guy... Anyone with a brain should understand that the use of the term "Indian" when referring to First Nations peoples is unacceptable and has been for several decades.
  8. Hmmm....I dunno...I'd say we scooped the National Post, at least: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/humboldt-broncos-bus-crash-what-the-photos-show-about-the-point-of-impact/ar-AAvDqEE?li=AAggNb9
  9. Assistant coach Chris Beaudry wasn't on the bus, because of where he lives: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/humboldt-broncos-coach-missed-fatal-bus-ride/ar-AAvDcaw?li=AAggNb9 There's no doubt in my mind that Beaudry would be dead if he had been on that bus. I've ridden the buses hundreds of times in my lifetime and I can count the number of times that the coaching staff didn't ride up front on one hand...
  10. CBC is reporting that the coroner misidentified two of the players. Parker Tobin, who was thought to have survived actually died in the crash, while Xavier Labelle was was announced as one of the deceased, is still alive: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/coroner-mistake-1-humboldt-player-thought-alive-is-dead-another-believed-dead-is-alive-1.4611045 You have to feel for the Tobin family.....thinking that a miracle had taken place,,,,only to have that miracle cruelly snatched away. Meanwhile, the Labelle family receives the best news imaginable....
  11. I wondered about that as well, but yesterday the sun set in Humboldt at about 7:45 pm, so I don't think that was it.
  12. I figured that out later, after I had posted my response. From my perspective, I pretty much saw your quote and responded, instead of looking at what Alf had said,
  13. Crash happened around 5 pm. This time of year, sunset is around 7:30, so I'd say it's unlikely...
  14. Unfortunately, it's not always as easy as "just cut down the trees". We don't know who owns the property on the other side of those trees and it's actually a fairly common practice on the prairies to plant trees as a windbreak, to prevent seeds from being blown away on freshly planted fields. I don't know the Humboldt area all that well, but I've been to both Nipawin and P.A. and it was plenty windy.
  15. I think it's fairly easy to glean from the photo that you posted. The stop sign and light pole in the foreground were taken out by the two vehicles. The area of green that we see in the center-right of the photo is where they and all the debris ended up.
  16. I'm honestly a little confused at how you can't see it. It's pretty obvious.... The truck approaches the intersection from the east on 335, with the trees to his left. The bus approaches from the south on 35, with the trees to their right. They wouldn't see each other until they were actually in the intersection. It's correct to say that the crash wouldn't have happened had the truck driver stopped at the stop sign, but at this point, we don't know why he didn't. Negligence is an obvious reason, but there are other possibilities as well, such as road conditions.
  17. For anyone who might have been having trouble understanding what Surfer and I have been trying to explain, this photo makes it easier to understand. The truck was traveling from the East, towards us in this view. The bus was traveling from the South, to the right of this photo, where we can see crosses planted at the side of the road. (as someone pointed out already, it looks as if this intersection has been the scene of accidents in the past, as well). As you can see, the truck driver's view of the oncoming bus would have been obscured by the trees at the top right. Whether he assumed the road was clear and didn't stop, or road conditions made him unable to do so, it's fairly obvious that the bus driver would have had no idea what was coming. I think this tragedy will definitely lead to a 4-way stop being implemented at this junction. Sadly, it's too late for at least 15 people...
  18. We don't know what the road conditions were. Like sonoman said, the truck might have slid through the intersection because of icy conditions. We don't know for sure that the truck driver is completely exonerated. It's entirely possible that the RCMP investigation comes to the conclusion that he was at fault (at least partially) but I find it doubtful that they'd release him without charges if it were evident that he ignored a stop sign.
  19. I'm thinking that the truck was coming from the bottom of this photo, while the bus was traveling from left to right. If you look at the bottom of the screen, you can see the light pole and power lines, diagonally crossing the intersection. The photo posted by sonoman above is from the opposite direction and shows that the trees in this photo, would have been to the truck driver's left and would definitely have obstructed his view of the bus coming fro the South (left) It looks like the truck sheared off the front third of the bus and spun it 180 degrees. Both vehicles ended up in the field, which I agree is in the northwest corner of the intersection.
  20. I don't believe in prayer, but whether it was his fault or not, this is going to torture him for the rest of his life.
  21. RCMP says the driver of the Semi was uninjured. Obviously, he (or she) doesn't feel as bad as the families, but it must be a horrible feeling nonetheless....
  22. As a kid, I've been on more of these bus trips than I can count and I'm sure my parents went through a lot of worry over the years. Travel in winter on Canadian highways is always going to have it's risks. The thing about Saskatchewan is that there are a lot of roads, generally laid out in a gridlike fashion. Going from memory of when I traveled Sask a lot, I have a pretty good idea where the bus was when this occurred. I was trying to wrap my head around how they could have been T-Boned by a semi. Looking at google maps, I think I see: They were north of Tisdale, on a straight run to Nipawin. I think the accident must have happened at the junction of highway 35 and route 335. There may have been a stop sign, or the junction might have been uncontrolled. I've certainly seen some in my travels around the province. For point of reference, Humboldt would be to the lower left of this map. And as I'm typing this, some details are starting to come out: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/newsalert-humboldt-broncos-captain-among-the-dead/ar-AAvApoW?li=AAggNb9
  23. https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/juniors/rcmp-dealing-crash-involving-humboldt-broncos-hockey-team/ Reminds me of the Sift Current Broncos crash years ago.
  24. Justin Smoak named AL player of the week. Well deserved and his salami from yesterday is my second favorite highlight from the opening week of MLB. #1 has to be "Mr. Analytics" from Philly, Gabe Kapler, who gave his pitcher the hook.... ....without having a replacement warming up in the 'Pen...
  25. Gotta say, Yangervis Solarte is looking like the new Munanori Kawasaki. Going to be a fan favorite for sure.
