Agreed. That's one reason I've been an advocate of trading him since before the start of last season. When the rumors of Stroman for Charlie Blackmon were swirling around, I was all for it. It was never confirmed, but if Shatkins said no to that deal, I think they made a big mistake. -

Stro has a pretty big chip on his shoulder. Goes hand in hand with being a small pitcher. He's probably been told over and over that he can't do it.... -
I'd say some poor decision making in the replay booth cost the Steelers.....

Yep. Depending on the price, of course.... -

Disagree. Morales put up similar numbers to Edwing, for a lot less money. (and less term) Not only that, but EE would undoubtedly have taken playing time away from Smoak. -

Love the optimism Shizzy, I just don't share it. Since it seems apparent to me that the Jays feel as you do, I hope you're right and I'm wrong. I don't think I am. I expect something around .500, but we'll see next September. -

If ever there was an aptly named GM in sports, it's Brian Cashman..... -

As opposed to where they are now? Do you think that the team has a legitimate shot at a playoff spot? I'd argue that another predictable third, or fourth place finish in the AL East is just as much a "waste of their careers". If the goal is the World Series and you can't compete financially with the likes of the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers, then the Houston model is the best bet, even if it does mean sucking for a few seasons. If you just want to try and be competitive and knock on the playoff door year after year, then I'd go with your plan. -
I was choked that this game wasn't on any of my cable feeds, but then they cut away after one of the games ended, just in time for me to see the 35 yarder in OT. Three plays later, Shady broke free. Steelers did their part by beating the Ravens. I expect the Chargers to win the west, so we just need the Chiefs to keep doing what they've been doing.... BTW: I'm not convinced that the Eagles are done. Foles is a decent backup, IMO. He just has to take care of the ball and Philly has a chance to win every Sunday. Ever without Wentz.

Hence my point. That's where I think the team should go. Shooting for respectability, (mediocrity) or just trying to be "competitive" is just a recipe for another 20+ years of being bridesmaids. -

Really? It seems the exact opposite to me. The trade with the Marlins, the signings of guys like Corey Koskie, Scott Downs, AJ Burnette, BJ Ryan, Frank Thomas...In fact, as a fan since '77, I can't recall the Jays ever tearing it down and attempting a rebuild. Also, I think the Astros just proved that you can win without a huge payroll. If I was Shatkins, I'd be thinking about following in their footsteps. -

I agree with Reggie. I think it's time to admit that the current incarnation of the Jays can't compete with the Yankees, Red Sox, Astros or Indians. This is the time to deal Donaldson, Smoak and Stroman and try to add players that will be coming into their own around the time that Vlady Jr., Bichette and Teoscar do. -

The point was that MLB is not interested in corporate ownership. The question becomes "which individual has the money to buy the Jays?" -

The other thing that people seem to forget about letting Edwing walk, is that if Shatkins gave him the same deal that Cleveland did, he undoubtedly would have spent most of the year at 1st base.. That means that the team MVP (and All-star) Justin Smoak, likely would not have been resigned, or would have spent most of the season riding the pine.... -

Stephen Brunt made a good point about this yesterday on Tim and Sid. There are only a few teams left in MLB with corporate ownership and according to Brunt (whom I think knows what he's talking about) MLB would prefer there were none. So the question is: Who in Toronto has the scratch to buy Jays? There can't be very many. Especially when you consider that it's a team that's re-tooling, if not outright rebuilding. I don't think you really thought this through. Certainly, some of the Shatkins decisions didn't pan out, (Pearce, Joey Bats, the lack of a backup catcher....) but Morales put up similar numbers to EE's for a lot less money. He also was signed for a shorter term... Other acquisitions are certainly in the wait and see territory, but personally, I'm excited about Lourdes Gurriel Jr, and Teoscar Hernandez. -
Don't like Goodell, but the fact that Pats' fans hate him and that this will really piss off Jerry Jones, takes a lot of the sting out of it.

A lot of cities are going to feel slighted and I think even Reggie will admit that there's a sense of entitlement with the Yankees when it comes to free agents. I hope Ohtani goes to the Padres. -
Agreed. I thought 1 game was warranted for a player with no history....even if he does play for the Pats.... And the GM says the benching of Eli has nothing to do with the decision....okay... They should have. It was pretty much the definition of a crackback. The taunting afterward just makes it worse. Also, "karma" should never enter into these things. The league should be sitting down a few of these guys for next week. Dirtiest game I've seen since the 70's Raiders were in their cheap shot prime.

Really? You think they'll beat Clemson? I just hope that those two pound each other for 4 quarters and the winner is nicely softened up for whoever comes out of the OU - Georgia game. (Hopefully it's the Sooners.)

I've only got my Canadian football referee's certificate to go on, but there's actually a penalty called "tripping". (The signal looks kind of like the one for clipping) It's not called often, but when it does, it's usually because a pass blocking OL stuck out his leg as a pass rusher is going past him. (Yes, I have a referee's certificate stashed away somewhere at my parents' place. A coaching one, too) Meh. Even a challenge doesn't always get it right. The game that Sabre and his friend are lamenting, when Phillips started Johnson over Flutie, included the best example of a forward lateral that wasn't called. It helped the Titans make the Super Bowl. BTW: @Tre Mac do you have a source for the claim that Phillips was acting on orders from Wilson? I've been blaming him for a lot of years.... As a fan of the Bills, (and obviously not the Patriots) I haven't really waded into the Gronk debate, but it certainly was suspension worthy. I agree with Alf and @SabreFan1 that it's even money that he gets off with just a fine, because he's Rob Gronkowski. Even those of us who despise the Patsies, can't help but like Gronk just a little bit.... It was an expected loss, but watching Brady and his OC screaming at each other on the sideline was at least, something to take home with us. Final note: @ReggieBush with bragging rights after this weekend. He was a man on an island all week. (and I admit to thinking that the Eagles would beat the 'Hawks as well)

Easy win for the Sooners against a tough TCU squad. Now if the Bulldogs can hang on against Auburn and the 'Canes can upset Clemson.....jeez, I guess I'm cheering for the Buckeyes, too.

Surprised that there isn't any talk of the World Cup draw. No real "group of death" this time around, although group D looks like the toughest. (Argentina, Croatia, Iceland, Nigeria) Bad news for fans of underdog Iceland. OTOH, a lousy Russian team actually has a chance to advance after drawing into the easiest group, with Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. France and England with pretty favorable draws, while Spain, Portugal and Germany should have no trouble advancing. Brazil should also have no trouble in group E, but the battle for second should be entertaining. Serbia, Switzerland and Costa Rica all have a chance to claim that second spot.
