A couple of people have asked for a "plan".... I can't speak for anyone else, but my plan / hope was that we would continue down the path we started on when we traded Horvat for futures. I was hoping we could unload a couple of other contracts (Boeser, Miller, Myers) for some draft capital and Cap flexibility. I was hoping we would slide a bit closer to the basement and have a decent chance at Bedard and if not him, then one of the other top few players available. My plan was to look to address the holes in the off season, hopefully after some of the larger contracts were moved. I was hoping that if we didn't see a valuable defender by the time the Islanders' pick came around, we might have accrued enough draft capital to trade up to a spot where we could get one...If the Isles decided to hang onto that pick, then I would become a big fan of every team playing them next season.... I realize that it takes time for draft picks to develop, but I reject the premise that player drafted this summer can't possibly be making an impact while the current core is still playing at a high level....and besides, if we had some Cap flexibility, we would be able to plug some of those holes in the lineup with placeholders like Schenn.... That was my plan.....I know many of you will disagree with it, but someone was whingeing about people who didn't like the trade criticizing management and demanded an alternative....so there you go...

I wonder what the sentiment would be if before this deal was made a rumour circulated that the Canucks were in on a former Calder winning RHD with good size and offensive ability....the only caveat being that he was 29.... From what I'm reading, it sounds like it would be a popular move, especially considering it would cost b=nothing in the way of draft picks or players....just cash.... That player would be Tyler Myers....

To be clear, I'm not against moving picks in every situation. It depends on the season and the quality of the draft. I'm loathe to move picks in a deep draft, especially where there is a generational talent at the top. In that circumstance, I want to hang onto picks and if the team is out of contention, then I'm interested in moving veterans for more picks. There is only one other year where I've advocated this strategy. that was in 2015. (and I argued with a lot of people on CDC then, as well) That was a year with a generational talent at the top as well, but we had signed free agents the previous year in an effort to make the playoffs.... Also worth noting in that draft: There were a least a dozen players in the first round who went on to have a significant impact in the league.

Fair enough. So where do you think that puts us? Are we in a better position to move Boeser (or Miller) because were now up against the Cap, or are we in a worse position? Are we now more or less likely to finish in a Lottery spot and have a shot at Bedard? What happens after next year, when the guy we needed so badly needs a raise? Can we still afford Petey and Huggy's raises, or de we need to dump more Cap? These are all the things that concern me.

I agree with the sentiment, however I think you are conflating two camps here.... There is definitely the "This is how the Canucks operate, so just accept it" crowd....but there's also the "This is a great move! We're going to contend in 2-3 years" crowd. I can agree with crowd 1 and still disagree with crowd 2....

I've already made my opinion clear on this trade, so I'm not going to get back into it, but I have to chuckle a bit at all of this talk of Drance (and other pundits who don't like it) being hacks who don't know the game, etc.... Meanwhile, Craig Button, the guy who called Mark Jankowski the "steal" of the 2012 draft, is the guy who knows what's what....
