Good on people for making Watson feel at home. Coolest thing about it? Reading the messages and the 5th one down (Ryan) just happens to be my nephew.

This loss was the dagger, I think. As gmen said, after blowing it against the Tigers yesterday, they now get to face a slew of Cy Young winners... I hate to blame injury, but once again, the trickle down effect is felt. Without EE or Lind, Gibby has no-one to protect Joey Bats. The best option he has is Navarro, who he plays as the DH. DN has done admirably in that role, but in the bottom of the 9th with bases loaded, the Jays don't have another catcher and are forced to let the perpetual Mendoza line candidate, Josh Thole swing the bat. Meanwhile, everybody else in contention wins their games.... -

The Dodgers helped the Jays out a bit this week, (too bad they didn't help themselves much) but don't look now, the Yankees somehow put it to the Tigers. The AL Wildcard is going to be tight.... -

I think Ricky is done, unfortunately. Drabek is a mystery. Injuries have played a major part, but he was supposed to be a blue-chip prospect. What really hurts is that he was the cornerstone piece that we acquired from the Phillies in the Roy Halladay deal. Years later, he hasn't contributed at all... -

I would agree with that if the Jays hadn't been up by 4 runs. If Hutch had allowed one more Oriole to reach base, then you make the change. Otherwise, I think a guy with 22 straight batters retired can be forgiven for giving up a 2 out walk. As I said earlier, the only caveat for me would be pitch count. -

Didn't get to see the game, but I saw the highlights and wondered about that. Hutch certainly seemed choked at coming out after walking Markakis. Was his pitch count getting too high? Otherwise, you'd think Gibby could have left him in for one more batter.... -

It certainly seems that way. It was pretty obvious that Bautista was disappointed that they didn't make any moves at the deadline. You have to wonder if that disappointment was team-wide and if it has seeped into their play.... -

I'd be willing to bet that every single GM he talked to wanted either Sanchez or Stroman. (or both) Couple that with the Sox and the Rays likely reluctant to trade within their own division and both Lester and Price were pipe dreams... It's the lot of the long reliever, IMO. Firstly, the long reliever usually comes in when the starter has given up a bunch of hits and usually a bunch of runs. You've probably heard the baseball expression "hitting is contagious". It is. So most times when the long man (that's what she said ) comes in, he's facing a batting order that is swinging with a lot of confidence. "Feeling it" as the saying goes. Combine that with the fact that middle relief is usually going to pitch more innings than most relievers and you have a recipe for giving up runs. For the most part, if he can "stop the bleeding" and keep the opposition from anymore big innings, the long reliever has done his job. I actually think that the Jays are fairly happy with Redmond so far this season. -

Have been for a while now. If they could land a decent SP for him, it would be ideal, IMHO. Let Gose play CF full time. You lose a bit of offense, but AG is better defensively, has more speed on the base paths and can lay down a bunt if needed. Besides, what you'd gain with an arm for the rotation would more than make up for the loss in power, if CR was moved. -

I haven't checked, but I wonder: With the addition of Lester and Samardzija, do they A's feel they needed to move a pitcher? I know "you can never have too much pitching", but maybe BB feels he had one too many arms? -

I agree. I can't see the Sox giving us Lester, only to have to face him in a ton of games each season for the foreseeable future. (Based on the assumption that AA would sign JL to an extension) I'm sure they remember when we scooped Clemens from them and will not want anything like that to happen again. I could see Lester going to the Dodgers or Giants...maybe the Nats... -

Moony's not likely to be traded. He's a 33 year old utility infielder and there really isn't much of a trade market for guys like that. If it's Hamels, or someone like him, the opposing GM is going to be asking for prospects, or maybe a player to fit a specific need. (I could see a team asking for Francisco, if they believe a left handed power hitter puts them over the top...) The key for AA, is to land someone like this without having to give up Sanchez or Strohman. Easier said than done, but that's why he makes the big bucks. -
Someone who can finish like Keano or Dafoe would be great, but I think the 'Caps are far more in need of a reliable defender. (preferably one who is dominant in the air) They give up way too many goals.

Thanks for that g_bassi. Anyone know anything about Beitashour?

I missed the game, but caught a tiny bit of the replay on one of the SNet channels. I have a couple of questions. At about 88 minutes, they flashed a graphic showing the 'Caps with 8 shots, to Dallas' 3. Was Ousted that bad, or was it the defense, or both? Also, it looked like Beitashour was injured. Anyone have an update?

Finally got around to seeing Dallas Buyers Club last night. 8.5/10. Terrific performance by MM. Great job of "skinnying up" for the role. Garner left me underwhelmed, but all in all an excellent movie.

Jays win a tight one today, thanks to a clutch hit by Navarro after a steal of 2nd by Joey Bats. Sanchez gets the W, but gives up the tying run in the 8th. Jays take 2 or 3 at Yankee stadium for their first series win in the Bronx since 2012. Now hoping the M's can knock off the O's, to put us within 2 games. Next up: a trip to Fenway. -

It was nice to finally get a win in the Bronx yesterday, but kind of disconcerting the way it happened. Three terrible at bats with 2nd and 3rd and no outs. Somehow we only come up with one run and were lucky to get even that... I know it's weak to blame injuries, but the lack of right handed batters is really hurting the Jays right now. Johnson came through in the 9th, but up until that moment, managers knew that loading up with lefties was the key to winning a series against the Jays. 4 lefties in a row at the bottom of the order.... Can't really fault Gibby for that, but maybe AA should be looking for a right handed bat, or maybe they should let Pillar out of the doghouse. -

The curse of Yankee stadium strikes again. The one time the Jays are able to score some runs there, their best starter can't get anyone out. Ichiro, of all people with the dagger... -
I definitely seems to be a last resort for him... There was a second down play early in the game where he had scrambled out of the pocket and had an easy run for the first. Instead he threw a cross-body wobbler that E Jackson had to make a diving catch on. I was yelling "run!" and "WTF are you doing!" at my TV.

Yep. The kid looked fantastic yesterday. (gotta love a guy who throws 98 without even trying...) Nice to see R.A. get the W, too. He probably didn't deserve that one, but there have been a couple of starts where he did, only have the offense go AWOL.... Then I tune into Sportsnet later on and I see them talking Jays with Dan Shulman and Steve Phillips.... Phillips is urging AA to trade Sanchez and/or Stroman for "pitching help now".... -
Yep. In fact, right after Suitor brought that up, they had him on an Iso replay. The play was a dump to Whittaker and Johnson really didn't have a responsibility. Coming off the line, he could have easliy involved himself by blocking someone in the BC secondary, but instead he just kind of slowed down and let the play happen in front of him. Either a terrible attitude, or a very poor understanding of the play... I'd also like to point out that Shawn Gore, OTOH, was fantastic blocking downfield on almost every one of those outside pitches to Logan and Harris that were working for the Leos all day long.
-
Yeah, KG looked a little uncertain at times as to whether to scramble, but that honestly doesn't bother me all that much. I understand that one of the more frustrating things for a football fan is when your QB gets sacked, especially on 2nd down. However, one of the most easily overlooked factors that make a successful quarterback is "taking care of the ball". Sometimes we get so excited about our QB scrambling for a first down, we forget about the times he may have fumbled, trying for that extra yard, or as happened to Lulay last season, is injured. It might be frustrating to watch your team punt, but sometimes, it's a blessing in disguise.

Just as I tuned in, Sol was flagged for a very questionable roughing the passer penalty. (Basically it was a tackle on a scrambling Durant) That being said, if I was a Rider fan, I'd be upset with the call that took away a touchdown, when Biggy stripped the ball in the end zone. It's my opinion that a better replay angle would have overturned that call. It stood because they went with the call on the field. Officiating aside, the Leos won this one because the defense completely shut DD down in the 2nd half. A much better game from Glenn and a stellar effort from Harris provided enough scoring for BC to win, but this one was on the D as far as I'm concerned.
