  1. ....and there it is! After retiring the first two guys on 5 pitches, Angels catcher Matt Thaiss takes Thornton deep....
  2. Now lets see if Trent Thornton can do his former team a solid....he's into the game facing the bottom half of the Angels' order....
  3. Not much help on the out of town scoreboard, unfortunately.... The Yankees are playing the 'Stros, so they gain ground on one of the two, but I think at this point, they probably would have preferred to see the Yanks win. Rays and Orioles both win, as well....and the Mariners are leading the Angels 2-1 in the 7th....guess who hit the go-ahead dinger for the M's....(hint: his initials are TH and he used to play for the Jays)
  4. The Yanks are done.....somewhere in Thailand they're celebrating.... I'm good with pretty much any result now....
  5. Bad news for hunters, I guess..... https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/federal-lab-confirms-deer-to-human-covid-transmission-in-ontario-report/ar-AA1eL2x0?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=08123336b60a4bcbb2b93a392cb66a95&ei=51 Luckily for those in Alberta and Saskatchewan, there was no mention of sheep in the report....
  6. Just had a look at the bracket. Huge match up on Sunday, as the US (who finished second behind the Netherlands in Group E) play Group G winning Sweden, who have looked like the best side in the tournament so far. C'mon Sweden....you can do this....
  7. Another shock elimination, as South Korea picks up their first point in the tournament in a 1-1 draw with Germany. The 2nd ranked Germans needed a win to advance, thanks to Morocco's 1-nil win over Colombia. Colombia ends up topping Group H, while Morocco, who lost 6-0 to Germany in their opening match, are also advancing. The Germans and Koreans are heading home.
  8. Yeah, as great as it is to finally get a win against the O's, it happened because one of their relievers was so wild the Jays' batters didn't even have a chance to swing at pitches outside the zone and their shortstop decided to channel his inner Rougned Odor on the Varsho grounder.... Even Springer's RBI hit was lucky....if he actually squares it up, it's probably a fly ball out. Vladdy does deserve credit for working that walk, though....
  9. I liked the addition of Hicks....and the injury to Bo made the trade for DeJong necessary....but not adding a right-handed bat is extremely disappointing. Right now, I'm betting the guys on the roster are feeling let down by management and I'll be surprised if the Jays manage to stay in the playoff picture. Houston has already passed them and I think the Bosox will probably do the same in the next few weeks....
  10. Last night's action showed the differences between the Men's and Women's game.... Brazil, Italy and Argentina were all eliminated in the Group Stage, while South Africa, Jamaica and Nigeria are all moving on to the Knockout Stage....
  11. Dan and Buck mentioned it last night....the difference between the the two teams comes down to one thing: Hitting with RISP... The O's are near the top of the league in that stat, while the Jays are near (or at) the bottom. Otherwise the offensive numbers are similar. Santander's Salami was a good example. Pearson thought he had AS struck out, (as did I) but he didn't get the call. Two pitches later the ball leaves the yard. When the Jays get that second chance, they almost always end up rolling over one and hitting a grounder to 3rd anyway.....
  12. I doubt it. But depending on how DeJong hits, I could see them playing him at 2nd and leaving Merrifield in Left when Bo gets back.
  13. As much as it would be fun to see Teo come back to the Jays, I also hear that the Nats might make outfielder Lane Thomas available. .287 avg/ 16 HR / 57 RBI / .807 OPS He also an upcoming Free Agent, so it might not cost a fortune in assets.....
  14. Bichette: No significant damage after an MRI. Listed as "Day to Day"....
  15. Meanwhile, Twitter or X, or whatever is suing a non-profit that fights hate speech online..... https://www.reuters.com/legal/musks-x-sues-nonprofit-that-fights-hate-speech-2023-08-01/ I'm going to stick my neck way out and say that CCDH has their facts straight, but honestly, why should it matter. If Elon is a truly "Free Speech Absolutist" as he claims, those assertions should be protected, no?
  16. Dammit! Portugal were a shot off the woodwork away from sending the Yanks home..... https://www.sportsnet.ca/womens-world-cup/article/u-s-slips-into-womens-world-cup-round-of-16-after-scoreless-draw-with-portugal/ Meanwhile, Netherlands win group E with a 7-0 trouncing of Vietnam and England win Group D after an easy 6-1 win over China.
  17. Hmmm.....maybe the Jays are not out of the Teo "Sweepstakes":
  18. The other option at Short (in addition to Tim Anderson) was Paul DeJong of the Cardinals. Looks like that's the way the Jays went: https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/report-blue-jays-finalizing-deal-for-cardinals-shortstop-paul-dejong/ Of course, the bad news here is that this suggests the team is expecting Bo Bichette to be out for a while. It also makes it less likely the team will be able to trade for an impact bat....
  19. Also seeing a lot of speculation that the Orioles are looking at making a trade for Justin Verlander....
  20. A couple of items on the trade front.... Apparently a half dozen teams have asked the Mariners about Teoscar Hernandez. (and yes, according to JP Morosi, the Jays were one of them) In my mind, this makes a Jays' reunion with Teo a lot less likely, as Toronto just doesn't have a prospect depth (or likely the inclination) to get into a bidding war over a guy they deemed expendable just last fall. The injury to Bo Bichette, makes it more likely (although not a certainty) that the Jays add a shortstop. Chicago's Tim Anderson is a guy who's name I keep seeing as a possible add for a team looking for middle infield depth. Although not a power bat, Anderson is still a solid defender and probably an upgrade over Santiago Espinal, if Bichette is ouit for an extended period.
  21. Angus Cloud (the guy who play Fez on Euphoria) has passed away. Not much for details, but the article mentions mental health and how he struggled with the recent passing of his father, so it sounds like it might have been a suicide. https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/31/entertainment/angus-cloud-death/index.html
  22. I think people look at his numbers and say "no thanks", but the fact is, if his numbers were good, he wouldn't be available.....at least, not for cheap. Bottom line is, Teo has shown he can get hot (I'm sure we haven't all forgotten who had the big hits against the Jays, last time they were in Seattle) and TO could use a right handed power bat that they can put in the lineup against tough lefties, or late in a game where they need a long ball....
  23. It's embarrassing enough to be knocked out in the Group stage, but to lose 4-nil is a bitter pill indeed. The team really needs to find Sinclair's replacement, because it doesn't appear as though Huitema is going to be able to fill those boots. (Probably time for Sinclair to hang them up, too) I'll find a bandwagon to jump on for the rest of the tournament, but TBH, all I'm really hoping for now is for someone (anyone) to beat the Americans. Sweden might have a shot....
  24. Looks like Springer is getting the day off. He's currently in the midst of an 0-30 stretch, so it's not much of a surprise. Cavan Biggio is taking his spot in the lineup. A bit of scary news as well: Jay Jackson has been granted leave due to a "Family Medical Emergency". I believe most ITT are aware that he has a Preemie son back in Utah. Hopefully this isn't bad news....
  25. Just spitballing, but I saw a report that said the Mariners have told teams that Teoscar Hernandez is "available".... IIRC, he's a pending UFA, so the price shouldn't be too outrageous....
