  1. Hockey players have such boring nicknames these days. It’s all Millsy, Petey etc. They just don’t put any thought into them anymore. It’s sad. I realize there are a few exceptions, like The Kuz Missile, but most are boring.

Lol. Like South Park's Woodland Critters...

"...Stan Marsh discovers a group of talking animals, known as the Woodland Critters, consisting of Squirrely the Squirrel, Rabbity the Rabbit, Raccoony the Raccoon, Beavery the Beaver, Beary the Bear, Porcupiney the Porcupine, Skunky the Skunk, Foxy the Fox, Deery the Deer, Woodpeckery the Woodpecker, Mousey the Mouse, and Chickadee-y the Chickadee are building a Christmas tree."

Hockey Players are inherently boring people. It's one of the reasons why interest in Hockey has been waning in recent years. Whereas leagues like the NFL and the NBA capitalize on there players personalities, the NHL seems to actively retaliate against players who show flashes of personality.

I feel like that's reflected in mundane hockey culture from Connor McDavid, the world's best player, having the personality of wet cardboard to these terrible nicknames that all end in "y".

If the NHL is going to grow in the age of social media it needs to do what the NBA is doing -- encourage players to have Youtube channels, podcasts, TikTok accounts, and whatever where they're interacting with fans and each other more. Spittin Chiclets shouldn't be the only hockey podcast in town and yet it feels that way.
